S4E3 Rev. Nate Manderson - J6 Committee and Religion Ignored

S4E3 Rev. Nate Manderson - J6 Committee and Religion Ignored

Ken welcomes back writer, former pastor, and educator, Rev. Nathaniel Manderson. As the year begins, Ken invites former guests who share a common perspective on politics and religion. Ken and Nate discuss his recent article, published last fall on Salon.com.  Entitled, "Theological pandemic: Why evangelicals embraced Jan. 6 and the Big Lie," they explore the question: why did the J6 committee fail to expose the religious leaders and religious ideas that energized and prompted the assault on the Capitol? How is it that many "evangelicals" resonate with the dark, destructive agenda (stolen election, anti-immigrant, anti-feminist, anti-government) promoted by the former president? We can not ignore the obvious religious aspect of J6. Nate is an unapologetic, committed Christian who is currently teaching in the Chelsea Public School District in Boston's inner city.  He views the obsessions of the religious right as antithetical to a genuine commitment to the Gospel of Jesus. S2E80 Nathaniel Manderson - Texas Law and Evangelicals

S2E80 Nathaniel Manderson - Texas Law and Evangelicals

Ken welcomes author, activist and pastor Nathaniel Manderson. After reading Nate's article on Salon.com ("Evangelical Theology Is What Made the Texas Abortion Outrage Possible"), Ken reached out to learn more. Nate agreed to a podcast interview. We learn that Nate, an ordained Baptist minister, is, like Ken, a seminary graduate (M. Div., Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston). They compare academic notes. Nate finished his undergraduate degree from UMass Dartmouth where he (the only male in the class) made a presentation on the Promise Keepers in his class on Women's studies. The two discuss the rise of Donald Trump as standard-bearer for evangelicalism, the effort to undo Roe v. Wade, LGBTQ inclusion and the current divide over race in America. Ken asks Nate to respond to "The Five Things You Cannot Say in Church." You'll find links to more of Nate's work in the expanded Show Notes.
