DENZEMBER VOL. I - Malcolm X feat. Edward Ongweso Jr.

Writer, editor and podcaster Edward Ongweso Jr. returns to the show to kick off Denzember, a monthlong celebration of our greatest living actor, with a conversation about Spike Lee's seminal 1992 biopic 'Malcolm X'. It stands as one of Lee's most triumphant achievements and one of Denzel Washington's very best performances as one of the most significant figures of 20th century America.

We discuss the film's trouble gestation period, taking nearly 30 years to get to the big screen then courting controversy throughout its production. We also discuss the film's portrait of Malcolm X and offer our readings of Spike's ultimate intention - presenting a fractured portrait that embraces the many sides of the man and the many ideologies and sects that claim him. Finally, we talk about the film's noteworthy detractors, including social critic and theorist bell hooks, who makes a compelling case that the film ultimately fails to bring a meaningful portrait of Malcolm to the big screen.

Read bell hooks's review of Spike Lee's 'Malcolm X' at Artforum.

Elijah Muhammad Pt II - The NOI vs The World

Elijah Muhammad Pt II - The NOI vs The World

This week we’re back with more on Elijah Muhammad and the NOI! But of course, we can’t talk about the NOI without at least mentioning Malcolm X and his influence and then ultimately his breaking away from the group. What led to this you ask? Well, it maybe had something to do with Elijah Muhammad’s complicated relationships, financial improprieties, revelations of pregnancies, affairs, and blackmail – classic! We talk about the financial dealings of the NOI and the internal conflicts that led to its fragmentation. But don’t worry, the Nation of Islam is still out there, being led by the one and only Louis Farrakhan!! Listen now for all the juicy details!!

Elijah Muhammad Pt I - Praise Be Upon His Fraud

Elijah Muhammad Pt I - Praise Be Upon His Fraud

Our Fraudster du jour is none other than the honorable Elijah Muhammad paired with the Nation of Islam. As always we are setting up the fraud with some good ole fashioned background info. We go from Elijah’s turbulent childhood and upbringing to his days as an alcoholic, to the moment he found God… or Wallace Fard, who interestingly enough claimed to be the Mahdi and founded the Nation of Islam. Ooookay, sounds legit! Like any good fraudster, Elijah went through many iterations of his name and title. And you know what, his antics were working!!! He was raking in new followers and new haters and that’s actually #goals because all press is good press baby!!!!

We examine the samples used throughout the project, including speeches from influential figures like Amiri Baraka, Malcolm X, Tupac Shakur, and Edward Onaci. 339 - The Death Angels

    339 - The Death Angels

The Zebra Murders were a series of racially motivated attacks and murders committed in San Francisco, California, by some so-called "Death Angels." From October of 1973 to April of 1974, a group of cold-blooded killers truly terrorized the city. Why? Nation of Islam teachings had convinced them that white people, in general, were truly evil "white devils" who needed to be destroyed. They were also taught that it was time for black men and women to violently start ridding the world of these white devils so that a type of heavenly paradise on Earth could be restored. Covering a lot of wild history today and theology in addition to a lot of true crime this week. If this episode doesn't entertain you, I've got nothing for you!

301 - The DC Sniper Attacks: A Cult of Two

301 - The DC Sniper Attacks: A Cult of Two

In October of 2002, the DC Snipers terrorized residents of Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland for three weeks. During that time, people lived in constant fear that they’d be killed - shot down - while in the midst of doing normally safe and benign daily activities like pumping gas, waiting for the bus, or even just walking across a parking lot to do some shopping. In total, ten people would be murdered, three people were critically injured, and others would be randomly shot at. Hundreds of FBI agents and local police officers would work this case before it was over. They were desperate to catch the man who was dubbed the DC Sniper or Beltway Sniper by the media. Except it wasn’t one man.  Investigators were looking for a lone, white, male gunman. They had no idea how wrong their profile was. When it was all over, 41-year-old John Muhammad and 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo - both black - would be arrested. And now the authorities had to unravel the strange father-son relationship between the two, and uncover their motive for their shootings. And that is a lot of what we look into today. Their relationship, more akin to cult leader and cult follower than it was to the normal killing duo dynamic. Hope you find this story as interesting as I do!

252 - Aliens, Sexual Abuse, Disco, Racism, and ... Egyptians? The Nuwaubian Nation of Moors Cult

252 - Aliens, Sexual Abuse, Disco, Racism, and ... Egyptians? The Nuwaubian Nation of Moors Cult

So much WTF!?! coming at you today. Wow. Dwight York is a maniac. And a terrible writer. And only a good disco/r&b vocalist if you compare him to other cult leaders who also have dabbled in music. But somehow this two-bit con man strung together around two hundred pamphlets full of his very confusing and constantly changing theology, or "factology" as he'd call it. The only message that remained the same as Dwight shifted his teachings from being based in Islam to Christianity to American Indian mythology to extraterrestrial, conspiratorial, Heaven's Gate-ish teachings, to Egyptian lore - was a consistent focus on black supremacy. And the only action of Dwight's that remained constant over the course of two plus decades of running his cult, was the sexual abuse of his followers. Dwight York, now incarcerated in Colorado's ADX Florence "supermax" prison, was a sexual predator who preyed on victims as young as four. He somehow convinced a few hundred followers to build a massive Egyptian-themed cult compound for him in Georgia, the third compound he'd build after the first in Brooklyn and the second in upstate New York. Today's tale is a wild one. Cult! Cult! Cult!

Thank you Space Lizards for helping us give $14,400 to https://supportsurfside.org/ - a hardship fund just established by the Miami Heat basketball team to help those impacted by the devastating building collapse in Surfside, Florida.

Islam in the Black Community Parts 1 & 2

Islam in the Black Community Parts 1 & 2
Back in 2016 I was honored to be a guest at the Center for Foreign Relations in NYC for a 2-day conference on politics and religion. Let me tell you, I was in the midst of some of the greatest minds in the country. I tried to pretended to as smart as I could. I mean, how to you keep up with conversations with folks who insert "I'm working on my 2nd dissertation now" in the 1st minute of chatting? Please know that I'm not complaining. I loved it. I did meet some interesting people who did end up as guests on this show. And these 2 episodes are examples. About 16-17 years before I'd interviewed a local imam about the Islam and the urban Black experience. I recently discovered that episode in a box of cassette tapes, and did upload it to this podcast platform. Admittedly, this discussion is very similar. But the sound quality is better. You will find Imam Ronald Shaheed a very colorful and brilliant voice. Enjoy.
