S4E59 Beach Talk #110 - Israel, The Speaker and Indigenous Peoples' Day

S4E59 Beach Talk #110 - Israel, The Speaker and Indigenous Peoples' Day

Ken is back from his travels. He and Betsey Newenhuyse connect for another Beach Talk. Just a few days before this recording, the world turned its attention to the Middle East and the vicious, surprise attack of Hamas on Israel. Betsey shares that she has extended family living in Tel Aviv. Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, who has been the focus of nationwide protests, takes international center stage promising a ruinous response. The Gaza Strip will be targeted. Ken and Betsey talk about the plight of Palestinians since the 1948 war. Ken shares his three visits to Israel and Palestinian territory. They turn their attention to the speakerless Congress, and the inability of the US Government to respond to the crisis. Ken shares his thoughts on Indigenous Peoples' Day - the national holiday declared to be so by Joe Biden as a Presidential Proclamation.  SHOW NOTES

Out of the Embers 4: Judith Moses talks with Brad Jersak

Brad Jersak's most recent book Out of the Embers deals with deconstruction in all its forms. Tent Talks invited Brad to make a four-part series on the themes of his book.  In this fourth episode has a conversation with Judith Moses, a seasoned indigenous political activist in Canada who is known for working on the committee that worked with Canadian prime ministers to ensure the First Nations charter of rights got into the Canadian Charter. She was born on the Six Nations Indian Reserve and her lifetime of service was recognized by the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal. She is also a chair at St. Stephens University where Brad works.

Layli Long Soldier — WHEREAS my eyes land on the shoreline

Layli Long Soldier — WHEREAS my eyes land on the shoreline

When you feel like crying, do you cry? Or do you stifle it? Why?

The U.S. Congress 2009 “Joint resolution to acknowledge a long history of official depredations and ill-conceived policies by the Federal Government regarding Indian tribes” stated Whereas the arrival of Europeans in North America opened a new chapter in the history of Native Peoples.” Layli Long Soldier wrote poems in response to this resolution and its non-consultative process. In this poem, she speaks of the need to let griefs and laments be heard and acknowledged.

Layli Long Soldier – is the recipient of the 2015 Lannan Fellowship for Poetry and a 2015 National Artist Fellowship from the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation. Her first book of poetry, WHEREAS, won the Whiting Award and was named a finalist for the National Book Award. She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Increasing Visibility is Existential for Native Communities, with Crystal Echo Hawk

Increasing Visibility is Existential for Native Communities, with Crystal Echo Hawk

We’re joined by Crystal Echo Hawk, founder and CEO of IllumiNative, a research-driven initiative created and led by Natives that is challenging negative narratives and supporting accurate and authentic portrayals of Native communities in pop culture. IllumiNative builds on Echo Hawk’s massive research project, Reclaiming Native Truth, which laid bare the shocking reality that nearly 80% of Americans (broadly defined) know little to nothing about Native peoples or aren’t even sure they even still exist, and the real-life consequences this “vanishing” narrative continues to have on Native populations. Fortunately, amid the trial and tragedy of 2020 (including the disproportionate impact of COVID on the Navajo Nation), there have been remarkable gains for Native peoples, from the ongoing power rooted in the protests at Standing Rock to the shutdown of the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Washington Football Team name change. We see media promise in the first Indigenous Filmmakers Lounge at Sundance in January to Peabody Award-winning Molly of Denali and a host of upcoming shows on various networks, Crystal is cautiously optimistic about the increasing visibility of Native Americans.
