Judges 13-15 | Faithful Parents with a Crazy Son

Judges 13-15 | Faithful Parents with a Crazy Son

Judges 13-15 tells the story of Samson, who was set apart by God as a Nazirite from birth. The angel of the Lord appeared to Samson's mother and told her that she would give birth to a son who would be a Nazirite and would save Israel from the Philistines.

As Samson grew up, he became known for his great strength and his exploits against the Philistines. He was also known for his unfaithfulness to God, as he often broke the Nazirite vow by touching dead animals and drinking wine.

In Judges 14, Samson falls in love with a Philistine woman, despite his parents' objections. During the wedding feast, Samson poses a riddle to the Philistine guests, promising to give them 30 linen garments and 30 sets of clothes if they can solve it. When the Philistines threaten Samson's wife to get the answer, Samson becomes angry and kills 30 Philistines to pay his debt.

In Judges 15, Samson returns to his wife, only to find that she has been given to someone else. In revenge, Samson catches 300 foxes and ties their tails together with torches, setting them loose in the Philistine fields and destroying their crops. The Philistines respond by burning Samson's wife and father-in-law, which leads to Samson's retaliation and a great battle with the Philistines.

Throughout these events, we see that God uses Samson to deliver Israel from the Philistines, despite Samson's unfaithfulness and lack of discipline. This is a common theme throughout the book of Judges, where God raises up flawed leaders to accomplish his purposes. However, this does not excuse Samson's disobedience or justify his actions, and he ultimately suffers the consequences of his choices.

The Birth of Samson - The Book of Judges

The Birth of Samson - The Book of Judges

In this Bible Story, Samson is born, and God grooms him to be a mighty judge over Israel against the Philistines. Samson was raised to drink no wine or strong drinks, eat only clean foods, and abstain from cutting his hair. This story is inspired by Judges 13. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Judges 13:5 from the King James Version.

Episode 66: Israel, revealing the issue deep in their heart by drawing close to their sin once again, is now captive to the Philistines. Within that captive nation exists a man named Manoah. He and his wife had no children. But as we have seen, barrenness is no obstacle for God. He appears to Manoah’s wife and tells them they will have a son who will rescue Israel. Manoah and his wife, like many of us today, show profound gratitude for this gift from God and ask Him how they should raise the boy, trusting in God and doing their best to bring Samson up in a way that will honor Him.

    What’s a Nazarite Vow? – Numbers E2

    What’s a Nazarite Vow? – Numbers E2

Confession of sins, strange water rituals, Nephilim, and Nazarite vows—Numbers 5 and 6 might feel like a confusing mix of laws, but the scroll’s author is cleverly reminding us of the Hebrew Bible melody we first encountered in Genesis 1-9. In this episode, Tim and Jon talk about four odd laws that are part of the intricate story we’ve been following through the Torah.
