You See What We Want To See

You See What We Want To See

"We Are What We See." This revelation is not just a simple observation but a doorway to understanding the immense power that lies within our grasp, the power of perception.

Our minds are like mirrors, reflecting the world within and around us. But these mirrors are unique – they do not merely reflect; they alter, they distort, they magnify. What we see is not just the world as it is, but the world as we are. Our fears, our hopes, our dreams, our traumas – they all tint the glass of our perceptions.

Our perceptions are like a prism, refracting the light of reality into a spectrum of experiences. These perceptions shape our understanding of the world, coloring our thoughts, emotions, and actions. They can illuminate our paths with hope and clarity or cast shadows of doubt and fear. The key here is to realize that these perceptions are within our control. They are malleable, adaptable, and subject to our will.

Let us embrace this powerful realization: "We Are What We WANT To See." Let us recognize and harness the creative power of our perception. Let us intentionally craft our vision, focus on our desires, and open our minds to the limitless possibilities. Our reality is ours to shape, our world ours to craft, through the power of what we choose to see.

EP 71 | The Windshield Effect: Transforming Leadership in the Present

EP 71 | The Windshield Effect: Transforming Leadership in the Present
In this episode of Being in the Arena, hosted by Zach Arend, he introduces an upcoming live event, "Leading in the Arena," on January 10th, emphasizing its relevance for entrepreneurial leaders, executives, and business owners. Zach shares a transformative story from a past event attendee who experienced increased self-awareness in real-time, highlighting the importance of focusing on the present moment rather than dwelling on the past, metaphorically represented by the rear-view mirror and the windshield. He explores the impact of a negativity bias when evaluating oneself and encourages leaders to shift their perspective, spending more time looking through the windshield to embrace creativity, solutions, and opportunities. The episode provides a glimpse into the workshop's focus on enhancing leadership by staying present and leveraging one's instincts. To learn more about the event, visit www.zacharend.com/workshop.

Finding Joy part 8 - Generosity

Finding Joy part 8 - Generosity

    Episode 101 - Finding Joy part 8 - Generosity

Generosity is the 8th and final pillar of joy. It is a culmination of all the other pillars. When you can see with perspective, humility and humor, when you accept reality and not fight against it, when you can forgive yourself and others, be grateful for all you’ve been given, show compassion for life itself, you are being generous. Joy is making space for your whole human life, the good, the bad, and the ugly, and continuing to move forward.

    Take aways:

#1 - What you focus on will grow bigger. With yourself and with others. Focusing on the good and being generous with yourself and others is not burying your head in the sand. It is purposefully choosing to see and emphasize the good. When you do this, it will grow.

#2 - When your life is being contracted or desolated, be generous with how you treat yourself. Be generous with kindness, compassion, thoughts, and actions. When you see others in desolation or contraction, exercise generosity with them too. The give and take of your life and others lives is our common humanity and it bonds us together.

    Challenge:

Ask yourself: How can I feel generosity today for my trials? How can I transform my problem into an opportunity to give to others? When we give joy to others, we experience joy ourselves. We are all spiritually connected and when we give to others, it benefits everyone, including ourselves.

    Toxic Positivity: Part 1

    Toxic Positivity: Part 1

In the realm of psychology (and in the realm of everyone's Instagram), the concept of toxic positivity has provoked intense debate and polarizing opinions. However, a deeper exploration into scientific literature reveals a thought-provoking paradox: the potential benefits of what some are quick to deem as toxic. In Part 1 of this series, co-hosts Megan Lund and Ryan Marquardt explore the intricacies of relentless positivity, highlighting research and sharing personal stories that challenge popular assumptions. Brace yourself for an intellectual journey that unravels the complex relationship between positivity and well-being, leaving you with a fresh perspective on the emotional, mental, social and physical power of "toxic positivity" (which is a term that probably needs to be rebranded at this point).

Generally defined as an overemphasis on positivity to the point of suppressing negative emotions, this episode highlights the subjective nature of the term. While also recognizing the "negative" effects associated with toxic positivity, Megan and Ryan present thought-provoking counter-arguments and propose new dialogue around the issue. Navigating  various aspects of toxic positivity, Megan and Ryan dish on everything from emotional suppression, spiritual bypassing and spiritual narcissism to the cult of positivity, the impact of toxic positivity on marginalized communities, and the correlation between toxic positivity and capitalism. While acknowledging the concerns and criticisms surrounding this new age buzzword, Megan and Ryan offer compelling insights, drawing from their own experiences and research, to present a more nuanced perspective.

Amidst the discussion, they also highlight the positive effects of what some may label as toxic positivity, such as a longer life expectancy, improved physical health, increased resilience, enhanced creativity and productivity, greater happiness and life satisfaction, improved mental health, more satisfying relationships and beyond. They draw a connection between spirituality and toxic positivity, exploring how new age concepts like The Law of Attraction and The Law of Assumption can be both beneficial and misguided.

Part 1 sets the stage, asking listeners to consider if it's possible to uphold a persistently positive outlook on life without sacrificing authenticity or refusing to engage in the prismatic emotional experiences that come with being human. Approaching the topic with an open-minded passion and a knack for playing devil's advocate, Megan and Ryan seek to create a space where diverse perspectives can be shared and understood. Stay tuned for Part 2, where they will further explore intricate themes related to toxic positivity, reveal eye-opening research that represents all sides of this debate, and offer credible action steps that will help you be more nimble with negative and positive mindsets.

Finding Joy part 6 - Gratitude

Finding Joy part 6 - Gratitude

    Episode 99 - Finding Joy part 6 - Gratitude

The Finding Joy series is based on the 8 pillars of joy outlined in The Book of Joy by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and The Dalai Lama. Gratitude is the 2nd pillar of the heart. So much has been documented about the benefits of gratitude, so I wanted to take a different approach to this important pillar.

    Take away #1
When you practice being grateful for what you have each day, you are combatting the negativity bias in your own brain.

    Take away #2
When you allow yourself to receive gratitude from others, you allow others to positively influence who you believe you are. The more favorably you view yourself, the more you will allow yourself to be flexible, take chances, speak up, connect with others – GROW in so many ways.

    Your weekly Challenge
Every day this week, write down 3 things you are grateful for. Don’t repeat anything. After day 2 or 3, it might be hard to find something, and that’s a good thing! It will force your brain to begin looking beyond the normal things. After you write down what you’re grateful for, sit still for 5 minutes and allow your body to feel the gratitude. Be very aware of what gratitude feels like in your body.

Employing Differences, Episode 154: What can this fear tell us?

"Fear is one of those emotions that we often don't like to feel. We often want to try to get away and get it marginalized. So even if we are open to, 'Hey, we are going to make decisions not purely based on logic, so we are going to listen to some emotions,' fear is often not one of the ones that we want to get snuggly with."

E32: Beat Imposter Thoughts and Content Blocks With a High Five File

Imposter thoughts are natural. Human psychology sets us up to think about past negative experiences more than the kudos, compliments, and high fives flowing our way. We internalize those negative experiences into stories that we continue to tell ourselves - making it tough to show up as an embodied leader and guide.

My favorite tool to beat imposter thoughts (AND content blocks) is the High Five file. Keeping track of client testimonials, positive speaker feedback, and DM’s about your impactful content helps you show up and share content from the perspective of the leader you’re trying to embody. It’s also a source of inspiration for thought leadership content ideas that can help you show up consistently.

My gift to you: your own free copy of my High Five File template for Notion.

“Negativity bias, imposter thoughts, and systematically limited beliefs like perfectionism keep us from showing up. So, we leave transformational opportunities at the table because we’re not AT the table to get these opportunities.” - Tania Bhattacharyya

Insights Into Teens: Episode 164 "The Power of Positive Emotions"

    Are positive emotions good?

Is Negativity Bias Secretly Robbing Your Joy? What You Can Do About It

Is Negativity Bias Secretly Robbing Your Joy? What You Can Do About It

Negativity bias - we all suffer from it! It’s the psychological phenomenon that means we as humans put more weight and emphasis on negative things over positive things. Read the news lately? They’re playing to the bias! Find yourself consumed by a remark someone made about you or something you read on social media? It’s the bias!

Negativity bias is dangerous because it robs us of our joy and has the potential to seed anxiety, depression and stress, among many other detrimental factors.

So what do we do about it and how do we protect ourselves from falling into its grips? Listen in for 3 battle strategies.
