Pencil Us In 56 - Sandman (and Books of Magic!)

Pencil Us In 56 - Sandman (and Books of Magic!)

In which we discuss some work by Neil Gaiman!  Sandman recently hit Netflix and we decided to get a little topical!  A few weeks later, but better late than never, eh?  We discuss how the book came together, we talk about themes, we talk about another book that Neil Gaiman did as well called Books of Magic!  This isn't a super-deep dive, but it should be fun nonetheless!

What do you think?  Do you have something to say?  Wanna tell us what you think of our current topic?  Have other things to say about other topics?  Wanna tell us some sweet recipes for cookies (please)?  Let us know!  We have social medias!  If you see the deranged pencil, you're in the right place!  I also check my email now!  I promise!  You could also give us a rating and comment on your favorite podcast aggregator!  Talk to us!

So, what sources did we use?  Check em!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWFDQRnSNOk

We also read some cool magazines with articles and stuff!  Wanna know which ones?

Back Issue Magazine (TwoMorrows Publishing): 57

    The Comics Journal (Fantagraphics): 155, 163, 169

What comics did we cover for our topic?  Take a look!

    Sandman (DC/Vertigo): 1-32

    Books of Magic (DC/Vertigo): 1-4

NOTE:  I could have gone waaay more in depth with this thing had I desired it, but I didn't desire it.  Gaiman is a prolific guy in several mediums with a million words written about him and his works.  I felt like just going over what I thought was interesting about his work without getting overly analytical.  Anyway...

Interview: Declan Shalvey - Old Dog out Sept 28

    1. Thanks for being on the AIPT Comics podcast, for folks looking at getting into Old Dog, can you give us the elevator pitch?
    2. Old Dog deals with espionage, but there’s a sci-fi layer to this book as well. For a general audience, will a James Bond fan enjoy Old Dog, or maybe even a Terminator fan?
    3. Given you’re writing, drawing, and coloring, have you ever found yourself mad at YOURSELF, say for a choice that required more work coloring, penciling, etc?
    4. You’re a one man army on this book, minus Clayton Cowles’ exceptional lettering! How’s that collaboration going, and what led to the decision to delegate that?
    5. I’ve seen you mention Heather Antos’ involvement with Old Dog, what is it like working with Heather on this project and in general?
    6. I’m tiptoeing around spoilers here, but Jack has a new partner at the close of the issue. How will their relationship change the tone of the story going forward?
    7. In the perfect world, how many issues is in the Old Dog omnibus?
    8. Declan you’re a busy guy, do you have other projects you’d like to talk about today?

An Attempt to Recommend Sandman by Neil Gaiman

Ben attempts to recommend that Nate (and the audience by proxy) read or watch Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Nate will not be recommended to without a fight, though. The conversation wanders through the DC Universe, Alan Moore, and I think One Piece for a minute there...honestly forget how that one came up.

One Year Anniversary, The Sandman (Netflix) & Prey (Hulu)

What would you do with a time machine? This episode begins with Rori traveling back in time one year ago to meet up with last year's versions of Rori and Aaron just before they recorded the very first episode of I'm Trying To Like It in early August 2021. Rori and Aaron spend a bit of time reflecting on what they've enjoyed about making the podcast over the past year and their dreams for the future of the show. Stardust with Fran Hoepfner

    Stardust with Fran Hoepfner

Jordan and Brooke are rejoined by Fran Hoepfner (Gawker, Fran Magazine) for Matthew Vaughn's whimsical 2007 fantasy adventure. There's an all-time Robert De Niro performance, a lot of discussions on British-leaning genre cinema, and not that much titular stardust. But Fran reflects on her high school viewing of this film and convinces everyone to watch "Peaky Blinders," Jordan praises the campy excellence that is Michelle Pfeiffer, and Brooke yet again professes her love for gay pirates (these ones harvest lightning!).

    Stardust

    Stardust

This week, The Plotaholics get into the spirit of Love Day with the 2007 fantasy-romance film, Stardust. In this film, Daredevil is trying to find a space rock to win the hand of Superman's girlfriend. He finds the space rock is actually a person played by the same actress that played John Connor's wife in the crappy Terminator movie.

An interesting side note, Dr. Sivana is looking for the same rock so he can become the king. Oh, and then 1991 Catwoman is looking for the heart of the rock too so she can eat the heart and become super young for a long time.

Yeah. There's a lot going on in this amazing film that stars Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, Robert De Niro, Mark Strong, and Ricky Gervais. So much fun, so much going on!
