    The Company of Wolves

    The Company of Wolves

On today's episode, Rachel and I learn that it's bad to read before going to sleep because your imagination is trying to actively traumatize you with an army of not that scary good boy doggos who just wanna run through your house! I mean, it'll also give you horrific visions of gruesome, skin ripping werewolf transformations and smashed doll heads, but just think about all those doggos! The movie is The Company of Wolves, directed by Neil Jordan and written by Jordan and Anglea Carter, based on stories from Carter's book "The Bloody Chamber."

    Episode 376: Angry Marked Men

    Episode 376: Angry Marked Men

We take another look at Blu-rays this week with Peter Sobczynski who along with Erik Childress do not have a lot of nice things to say about some recent theatrical offerings coming to physical media. But there are kind words to be found. Just not for William Goldman. However on the positive front there is a terrific everyday kind of thriller about being a working mom and some choice offerings from Kino with Irene Dunne, Buster Crabbe, Lon Chaney and Basil Rathbone. Plus new 4K offerings from Criterion, an overlooked horror film with Mia Farrow and two of Sidney Lumet’s best films including one of the all-time great debuts.

    Episode 341: Blu-Ray Black Friday

It’s the Blu-ray time of the week and Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress again to talk a whole bunch of 4Ks for your Black Friday shopping. Take advantage of the Barnes and Noble Criterion sale to grab one of the best films from Pixar and one of the best from Spike Lee. Shout Factory has new editions of genre cult classics from Neil Jordan and Norman Jewison while Vinegar syndrome delivers a 4K of maybe the ultimate cult film. Kino has another Eastwood in 4K and a comic book parody before the Marvel onslaught. Erik goes to bat for James Gunn’s spinoff from The Suicide Squad and talks of the curse that prevented his dad from seeing Pearl Harbor prevented in a movie. They talk more Bob Clark, an immense set from Sony Classics and the origins of Martin & Lewis. Finally they discuss one of the best comedies of the year and a new 4K of one of the best comedies of the 1980s.

    Byzantium: My Gods are Older

    Byzantium: My Gods are Older

Codename Thor joins Caitlin to talk about 2012's Byzantium, which is the first vampire movie we've covered on the show. It's a beautiful movie, and we had a great time dissecting its themes of mothers and daughters, carrying the past, and sex work. I quiz Thor on his vampire knowledge, and we somehow land on X-Men for a while. Be sure to check out Thor's Hour of Thunder, available wherever you get your podcasts.

‘Interview With The Vampire’ Should Have Been Gayer with Jordan Crucchiola

It’s the final week of our Queer Horror Month and we’re going out with a bang. Our good friend Jordan Crucchiola joins us to talk about the homoerotic classic, ‘Interview With The Vampire.’ We discuss how this movie takes a lot of cues from queer cinema but never goes far enough to make an actual statement. We have another edition of the ‘Hall of Excellence’ where we induct “Cinema’s Hottest Vampire.” And, at long last, it is the return of the ‘Christmas Zaddy Christmas Movie Minute.’

‘The Company of Wolves’ with Actor and ‘Prevenge’ Director Alice Lowe

‘The Company of Wolves’ with Actor and ‘Prevenge’ Director Alice Lowe

This is a special episode because one of our guests is an actual baby. The other guest is her mother; actor, writer, and director Alice Lowe. You may recognize Alice from her acting work in any number of things; Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers (which she co-wrote), Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, Hot Fuzz, The IT Crowd, and many others. But she’s also a director, and wrote, directed, and starred in 2016’s Prevenge. She’s on the show today, calling in from London, to talk about the undersung 1984 fantasy, The Company of Wolves. She and April discuss making independent films and not limiting your imagination just because you’re doing things differently. They chat about the writer Angela Carter and utilizing dream logic. Plus, Alice hammers home the importance of not eliminating the tragic elements from fairy tales.
