"Work with your brain, not against it!"

Welcome back to The Resilient Mindset Series.

I believe a resilient mindset is one of the key elements to a successful business owner, if not THE most important, so what exactly is a resilient mindset? How can we develop one? And why is just so important?

In this series of podcast episodes, each month I am going to be interviewing a truly inspiring female business owner who has overcome adversity, managed failures, dealt with grief, heartbreak, disappointments and setbacks but are still standing, still working towards their goals and, if anything, are all the stronger for it. I defy you not to be inspired and uplifted by these women's stories and I cannot wait to share them with you!

This month I am back with another fabulous guest - Rachel Barber from Creating Stories.

Rachel went from a career that started in sales and marketing which evolved into running a copywriting and content marketing business … to a life made up of personal writing projects, stand-up comedy, political campaigning for women’s equality, learning new languages and acting. And what ties all these things together? Rachel's love for telling stories that deserve to be told.

During her 13 years of experience as a Writer and Content Marketing expert Rachel has worked with both small digital consultancies and large multi-nationals.

Rejection sensitivity and the pro´s and con´s of labels with Colette Stevenson

Rejection sensitivity and the pro´s and con´s of labels with Colette Stevenson

Colette joined me in an earlier podcast where we discussed her how she stumbled across the idea for her business postagrid.com

In this podcast, we touched upon rejection sensitivity and I just couldn´t wait to get Colette back to discuss this subject in more detail.

During this podcast, Colette tells us about a time when her friend cancelled on her and Colette had such an extreme response to this feeling of rejection that she then cut her out of her life and has regretted it ever since but she didn’t know then, why she had such an over reaction to what was simply a change of plans with a friend.

Colette tells us how she came across RSD rejection sensitivity disorder in a group for ADHD women which is where she discovered that a lot of the things she had struggled with in her life, was actually related to ADHD  - She only began to find these things out 2 years ago and she says it set her free after all this time (30 years) of her thinking she was wrong.

We find out that RSD is a fairly new concept to both of us and understanding more about it now, helps us both move past this feeling of rejection in our own way.

Colette tells us how she found herself doing something maybe a lot of us doing which is doing things just to please others because she knew the feeling of rejection and she didn´t want others to feel this way but this led to her harming herself in the process – people pleasing.

We also discuss the pro´s and con´s of labels and receiving a diagnosis with a label such as autism, ADHD, BPD  and the unfortunate stigma these may come with

If there's a perfect storm of complexity and confusion for parents of adolescents and young adults it's the intersection of a mental health condition, neurodiversity, substance use and gender identity. It's overwhelming to know which aspect of these to address first, or do you address them all at once?

Sean Garcia is a licensed therapist in Northern California and is one of a handful of trans-identified clinicians in Silicon Valley. He is extremely passionate about supporting transgender people and their families and we dove deep into how he does that, in particular with young people.

Sean shares his own experience of coming out to his family and painfully delayed transition,  which caused him to spend many years chronically ill, and overachieving in order to validate to the world that he was "ok."

In this episode, you'll hear so much that will help if you're the parent of a young person struggling with any, or all of these life challenges including:

    • the extra challenges of neurodiverse individuals when it comes to gender identity
    • Sean's challenge to parents who believe their child's sexual or gender identity is a trend and the popular thing right now
    • how he decides what issue to explore first in therapy when there are multiple factors involved
    • how a parent's fear often matches a teen's fears around sexual identity, and that they have their own coming out experience
    • common mistakes or missteps parents make that can negatively impact their LGBTQ kids
    • one simple question parents can ask their children as they explore their gender and/or sexual identity
    • risk factors parents might not think about when they have a neuro-diverse child with gender identity struggles and/or substance use and mental health issues
    • the first things to do, and not to do, when your child comes out (A-T-A)
    • what an affirming home environment might look like
    • and tons more

This is a do-not-miss episode for parents of these complex kids, and will give you actionable ideas of how to help your son or daughter regardless of their current struggles.

EP52 Pleasing Versus Self-Honoring in Relationships with Angus and Rohini Ross

EP52 Pleasing Versus Self-Honoring in Relationships with Angus and Rohini Ross

While it’s normal to want to please partners in relationships, overextension of efforts often leads to conflict. In this episode, Rohini and Angus share their take on how to break the pattern of pleasing our partners without honoring our limitations, while valuing the importance of diversity in relationships. They also talk about how to surpass any feelings of resentment that may arise when the receiver misses out on celebrating the giver’s generosity.

It’s important to know our boundaries and articulate our limits to our partners. This is important for “pleasers” in a marriage who have a tendency to put themselves first without listening to what works for them. Often, they resort to overriding their instincts for the sake of a quiet and peaceful coexistence and to avoid emotional pain. And, when the appreciation they receive is not equal to the overextension they’re making, it only leads to unhappiness.

Assuming that our partner recognizes the efforts we’re making disregards the fact that the other person is not psychic, or that they process information differently than we do. Pleasing our partner is healthy, but only if it’s within our internal boundaries. If it’s just to feel safe from disappointment, then the misplaced motivation only serves as a coping mechanism to protect ourselves.

In this episode, Rohini and Angus offer helpful advice on how not to keep giving with our reserve fuel to the point of depletion. Doing so ensures we’ll only be running on fumes. It’s easier to get angry when holding on to old patterns of people-pleasing behavior.

To overcome the conflict that results from a lack of appreciation, it’s important to be present and more honest with ourselves. We must be okay with being vulnerable.

One important takeaway from Rohini and Angus’ discussion is when we speak our truth from a neutral place without fear of being judged, we can show up more authentically in our relationships. This creates a harmonious give-and-take dynamic that allows two people who love each other to enjoy the relationship.

Angus Ross & Rohini Ross are “The Rewilders.” They love working with couples and helping them to reduce conflict and discord in their relationships. They co-facilitate private couples' intensive retreat programs that rewild relationships back to their natural state of love. Rohini is the author of the ebook Marriage, and they are co-founders of The 29-Day Rewilding Experience and The Rewilding Community. You can also follow Angus and Rohini Ross on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. To learn more about their work visit: therewilders.org. Read Rohini's latest blog.

Episode 52 features the music of RhythmPharm with Los Angeles-based composer Greg Ellis.
