Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (The Return of Side Eff@cks)

Nerve damage from chemotherapy can lead to lingering effects after treatment. There are several natural agents that can help. But, some can actually make it worse too! Listen in while Tina & Leah discuss how to prevent chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and what to (safely) do if you already have it.

Chemotherapy drugs are designed to be toxic to cancer cells but sometimes they are also toxic to your nervous system. This can have long-term consequences. Take heart, there are ways to lessen the risk during treatment. There are also ways to improve peripheral neuropathy symptoms after treatment. Did you know that there is clinical trial data that shows this? (We may be creative, but not when it comes to recommending treatments.)

    STUDY: Laser Protocols for Neuropathy

    STUDY: Laser Protocols for Neuropathy

Knowing how to properly apply photobiomodulation is critical to get the results your patients need. Various irradiances of near infrared light have been shown to be beneficial for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Today Dr. Rountree and Kristi discuss a study on the mechanistic basis for beneficial outcomes regarding laser therapy by near infrared light on neuropathic pain. Follow along as they discuss why a combination of high irradiance and low irradiance treatments can be used to not only block pain signals, but to also alter the nerve’s pathology and inflammation to stimulate repair.

    Chronic Wound Healing

    Chronic Wound Healing

Dr. Rountree and Kristi review a study from June 2021 in which they tested the effectiveness of laser therapy with wound dressing vs only wound dressing for chronic wound healing. Chronic wounds include chronic ulcers, post-operative infections, diabetic foot ulcers, bedsores, severe burns, venous leg ulcers, and traumatic wounds. These are difficult to manage and often lead to amputation. Hear about the laser settings and treatment protocols used and the results achieved.

    The Mighty Myelin Sheath

In this mini episode, Hillary nerds out about the anatomy of the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is the protective, fatty coating surrounding your nerve fibers along the axon, similar to the protective covering around electrical wires. It allows electrical impulses between nerve cells to travel back and forth very, very quickly. Tune in to learn more about how the myelin sheath works, and what happens to our body when it doesn't work.
