To Snip Or Not To Snip

To Snip Or Not To Snip

There is so much conflicting information out there on when to spay or neuter your pup.  The vets, these days, are telling pup parents to wait 14,16,24 months before spaying or neutering.  They report the pups reach their full height and it will decrease likelihood of injuries later.  However, people have historically altered their pups as early as 8 weeks.  What is a pet parent supposed to do? I have my take, as a trainer and daycare owner, in this podcast.

The Best Time to Spay or Neuter Your Pup With Dr. Wanda Vockeroth DVM

The Best Time to Spay or Neuter Your Pup With Dr. Wanda Vockeroth DVM

#027 - The Best Time to Spay or Neuter Your Pup With Dr. Wanda Vockeroth DVM

Today’s topic is a little bit controversial. I know that people have very strong opinions about spaying and neutering dogs and some of today’s conversation might not align with the beliefs amongst the general population of dog owners.

No matter your thoughts on the matter, we can all agree that spaying and neutering your pup is the surest way to ensure that no unwanted puppies are born. Nobody wants unwanted puppies. Nobody wants to euthanize dogs. THAT is a no-brainer!

I also know that in the case of rescuing dogs, there might not be the luxury of choice when it comes to spaying and neutering dogs. Nothing I ask, or say, in this episode is disputing that.

That being said, I believe that every person should be armed with the information they need to make the best decisions for THEIR pup. There is no going back from a decision to spay or neuter your dog, and it’s you and your dog that will experience the potential consequences of your decision, so it should be an informed one. It’s my hope that this episode will help you with that decision.

Today’s guest is Dr. Wanda Vockeroth from Healing Traditions Holistic Veterinary Clinic in Calgary, Alberta Canada. She also happens to be my veterinarian! Dr. Vockeroth is certified in veterinary acupuncture and homeopathy, and has training in Chinese herbology, osteopathy and rehab medicine.

In today’s episode we will be discussing all of the available options pup parents have when it comes to spaying and neutering their dogs. This is an extremely informative and eye-opening episode you aren’t going to want to miss!

    Dr. Vockeroth's qualifications include:

    • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
    • Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist
    • Certified in Veterinary Homeopathy
    • Training in Chinese Herbology
    • Training in Osteopathy
    • Training in Rehab Medicine

    In This Episode You'll Learn:

    • What exactly spay and neuter procedures entail
    • What a pediatric spay and neuter are
    • The long term effects of pediatric spay and neuter
    • How you can help your pup when pediatric spay or neuter is unavoidable
    • What is pyometra and who's at risk for it
    • If neutering males can curb unwanted behaviours
    • About several, lesser known sterilizing procedures
    • What to look for to indicate your intact female is fertile
    • The best ways to avoid an unwanted pregnancy with intact pups
    • The biggest beefs of having an intact pup
    • The ideal age to spay or neuter your pup

"It's really good if we can get the changes through here - that can be an inspiration for other other countries or other places in the world," says Þorbjörg Þorvaldsdóttir, chair of Samtökin ’78, the national queer organization of Iceland. In 2019, Iceland passed the Gender Autonomy Act, which added an option for people to register their official gender as X; with it, the country's strictly binary-gendered naming laws were suddenly transformed. Other changes, like a new genderfree pronoun, are catching on; but overhauling a whole grammatically gendered language is no easy undertaking.

A Second Perspective on the Spaying and Neutering Question

A Second Perspective on the Spaying and Neutering Question
My dog Chocolate Chip is currently in heat. Go ahead, gasp in horror! I’m used to it, because I take quite a bit criticism for this. There are a lot of people out there who say that you absolutely must have your dogs spayed or neutered, and the earlier the better. Before we dive further into this topic, I’d like to offer a quick disclaimer. I don’t want to definitely come out and label either side of this issue right or wrong. I’m not an expert on dog hormones or surgery. What I do want to do is offer a different perspective for you to think about. Often, many veterinarians tell owners what to do without looking at all the information available. A few studies have come out in recent years which show that neutering and spaying early isn’t actually a good thing. It can allegedly lead to higher rates of cancer, behavioral issues, and other problems. On the surface this seems sensible, and once you dig into the idea a little further it starts to make more and more sense. Here’s why. When you spay a female dog, you remove her reproductive organs and a large chunk of her endocrine system along with them. Neutering a male dog produces similar results: removing the testicles and their hormones, you also take away many important growth hormones. Think about what might happen if you performed a hysterectomy on a five-year-old girl, or removed the testicles of an adolescent boy. These operations have been done for medical reasons, and they create hormonal imbalances and other health issues that often need to be corrected later. Plus there are many parts of the world where boys are sterilized at a young age, and they tend to develop many physical and mental health issues as a result.
