Sculptor Jessica Jean-Baptiste Reflects on Her Creative Journey and Exclusive Collection for AphroChic

Sculptor Jessica Jean-Baptiste Reflects on Her Creative Journey and Exclusive Collection for AphroChic

Haitian-born, New York sculptor Jessica Jean-Baptiste, sits down with us to discuss her practice, her evolution as an artist and her exclusive collection for the AphroChic Art Shop. In the tradition of artists such as Edmonia Lewis, Elizabeth Catlett and Augusta Savage, Baptiste's latest works, The Keisha and Jamal Busts are a celebration of the beauty of Black life and Black bodies. These new works present a Black man without conflict, and a Black woman at peace. Simple images, yet revolutionary pieces by Baptiste, in their rejection of the story of Black America that is commonly told.

Jessica Jean-Baptiste is featured in Issue No. 11 of AphroChic magazine in the story, The Question is In The Answer

009 - Here Be Barr | The Ultimate Guide to New York City

009 - Here Be Barr | The Ultimate Guide to New York City

Jon Barr is the host of "Here Be Barr," a travel, lifestyle, and vlogging YouTube channel showing you everything you need to know about New York City.

Jon started his career in media as a sportscaster. But after burning out and reading about another NYC vlogger, Casey Neistat, he thought he'd give the YouTube thing a try. So he started making videos on his trips to different countries. He eventually settled on the niche of the city of New York.

As of this recording, his channel has 335k subscribers. There's no other channel out there that depicts the beauty, chaos, and variety that New York City has to offer...at the level of Jon's channel.

Jon and I cover: what it’s like to be a full-time content creator with a newborn baby, how Jon went from sportscaster to YouTuber, how Casey Neistat changed the YouTube space, Jon's protocol for when homeless people approach him, what stereotypes of New Yorkers are untrue, how long it can take for a video to go viral, and much more.

I don’t want your pity, I just need help! with Kim Hopson

I don’t want your pity, I just need help! with Kim Hopson

Content Note: This episode contains swearing

Accessibility doesn’t have to suck! Artist Kim Hopson was born with one arm; she is really, really tired of the limiting narratives for disabled folks, finding herself the recipient of either pity, or the “attagirl!” for performing basic life tasks. What’s more, she’s tired, from parenting her two young children in a world built for people with two hands. Host Elle Billing and Kim spend this episode digging into all the ways disabled folks have to hack our ways through barriers on a daily basis, and the challenges and joys of getting the help we need.

From New York with Love with ZIGS (Part 2 of 2)

From New York with Love with ZIGS (Part 2 of 2)

New York, we’ve come a long way! Happy Thanksgiving week to you and yours, hoping that you can spend it with those you love this year, wherever you may be.

Episode 47, I bring you Part. 2 of From New York with Love with Zigs (Erica Zigon). Zigs and I talk about how her iconic New York songs nearly didn’t happen, and how the song Manhattan was born in the living room of her small apartment. It was there in which it all began and the entire band jammed out in an impromptu session to create the foundation for the song. She also  reveals the band who sparked her creative process for this New York centric album, plus much more.

And, as the winter and holidays approach, we also discuss her non-profit We've Got You Covered (WGYC), which aims to help the homeless population in the city by providing blankets, shoes, clothes and above all a human to human connection.  Zigs notes, she’s learned more speaking to these homeless individuals and hearing their stories than she did throughout her schooling. Now, that’s what I call the school of life in New York City!

Tune in and let us know which version of the Manhattan song you like best - the studio version or regular version?

From New York with Love with ZIGS (Part 1 of 2)

From New York with Love with ZIGS (Part 1 of 2)

It's the two-year anniversary of the Gossipnista podcast today and there is no better way to celebrate then with my special guest today and her amazing music about New York City....

I still can’t believe I had the opportunity to interview such a talented up-and-coming musician and artist such as Erica Zigon. And yes, she’s definitely from New York, but you’ll have to tune in to find out where…

Her authenticity and talent is so raw with so many colors and stories to share throughout our interview, I am nearly left speechless.

You can expect a two episode installment with Zigs, today’s and the next one dropping on 11/22, which actually lines up perfectly with the two year celebration of the Gossipnista podcast today.

With major inspiration from her brother, who she’s always seen as a rockstar, and who helped to shape the musician she is today, she goes deeper into this bond, as well as her admiration for pop charts sensation Jon Bellion, and many other topics including New York City.

This is just the beginning for Zigs and I absolutely love the motto she’s adopted, “I try not to focus on getting bigger…just getting better.”

Amen to that and the new Manhattan/New York song she has created for the city!
