    A Conversation with Brian Peckford

    A Conversation with Brian Peckford

This week I speak with Brian Peckford. We discuss the Canadian Constitution, his contribution to it, and why Canadians are under-informed about and take little to no pride in it. We emphasize the importance of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the particular structure of a constitution with respect to the country and the people that create it. We also talk about the importance of understanding the specific nature of Canadian Federalism.

    All this and more!

    Thanks, Brian!

Atlantic Canada: Is Net Zero Electricity by 2035 Possible?

Atlantic Canada: Is Net Zero Electricity by 2035 Possible?

This week John Dalton, President of Power Advisory joins the podcast to provide an overview of the electricity markets in Atlantic Canada, including the provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.  We also cover Quebec’s role in supplying electricity to the region.

Here are some of the questions Peter and Jackie asked John:  Is the Muskrat Falls hydro project operating yet? What is the final cost of Muskrat Falls?  Considering the high cost, do you expect other large hydro projects to be built in Eastern Canada?  What is the latest on the Atlantic Loop and Quebec to US transmission projects? Are the incentives and financing in Canada’s Budget 2023 enough to get transmission projects started? What was the historical agreement between Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec for supplying electricity from Churchill Falls and how has that shaped the relationship between the two provinces on electricity?  Will Atlantic Canada have small modular reactors (SMRs) operating by 2035? Is renewable power generation (wind or solar) expected to grow in Atlantic Canada? Do you think Atlantic Canada will reach net zero electricity by 2035?

Anti-Racism and the White Moderate Government (Ep. 2)

Anti-Racism and the White Moderate Government (Ep. 2)

Black Lives Matter brought anti-racism to the mainstream.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, four cabinet ministers have been tasked with reviewing policies to address institutional and systemic racism in the province.

But almost two years later, has anything actually changed?

Something Martin Luther King Jr. wrote 60 years ago in his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” offers us critical insight into today’s anti-racism efforts.

On berrygrounds this week, Dr. Paul Banahene Adjei tells us why politicians—and all of us—should heed King’s caution about "moderate" white allyship in the fight to end racism.

Innovating Youth Ministry in Buchans, N.L.

Innovating Youth Ministry in Buchans, N.L.

As the corps officer in a small town in Newfoundland, Lieutenant April Ward was looking for ways The Salvation Army could better serve her community. Some brainstorming led her to a brilliant idea, and in this episode of the podcast, Lieutenant April shares how “family night theme bags” have transformed youth ministry at her corps—and sparked a new ministry to seniors, too.

Why pollution is as much about colonialism as chemicals

Why pollution is as much about colonialism as chemicals

The state of our environment just keeps getting scarier and scarier, yet it feels like we have yet to find a way forward. Two Indigenous scholars who run labs to address the climate crisis say bringing an Indigenous understanding to environmental justice could help us get unstuck. A big part of that is seeing pollution through a new lens – one that acknowledges it is as much about racism and colonialism as it is toxic chemicals. Vinita talks to Michelle Murphy, Professor and Canada Research Chair in science and technology studies and leader at the University of Toronto’s Environmental Data Justice Lab. Also joining is Max Liboiron, author of Pollution is Colonialism, and associate professor in geography at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
