    Kate McLiney: All Things "LoKCal"

    Kate McLiney: All Things "LoKCal"

Kate McLiney is a Kansas City blogger, influencer, and native with a passion for sharing all of KC’s best-kept secrets with the community. “LoKCal” hit Instagram five years ago, and Kate has since become one of the top influencers in the KC Metro.

The Brookside local and Notre Dame de Sion grad made her way to Arkansas for college before returning home to KC and starting a career at Cerner, where she found herself surprised time and time again at all that her hometown now had to offer.

Five years ago, she felt inspired to start sharing the events, stories, meals, and businesses she was discovering through a blog and Instagram account appropriately named “LoKCal”. Covid transformed the passion project, bringing her deeper into conversation with the people behind the places. Today, Katie runs her own boutique recruiting firm — MAC Industries — and spends her free time exploring the people, places, and stories that make Kansas City so unique.

Date Nights, a Boozy Boutique shop in NY, & an Upscale Chocolatier

Date Nights, a Boozy Boutique shop in NY, & an Upscale Chocolatier

We began with restaurateurs, Justin Weathers and Joseph Monnich, who own several dining establishments in Pennsylvania.  They are known for bringing an elevated style to foods that you love. They're joining us to discuss their newest restaurant, Joey Chops.  Joey Chops, which will hold its Grand Opening in the coming week, offers a luxurious dining experience with a cocktail menu tailored to impress.  Located in Malvern, PA, Joey Chops will put a modern twist on the classic American steakhouse--a perfect choice for your next night out.

Of course, if you're planning a Galentine's or romantic dinner, it's important to choose the perfect beverage to pair with your meal. To help you with your choice, we had a wonderful conversation with Sunshine Foss, owner of Happy Cork located in Brooklyn, New York.  In addition to offering bottles from well-known labels, Sunshine selects, sells, and offers brands that reflect her surrounding community. As a Black and Woman-owned entrepreneur, Sunshine recognized how impactful this was to her neighborhood and customers, and began to curate her selection of wines and spirits from minority-owned vintners and distillers. What is even better, Foss offers tastings for the products she carries; and if you are curious--some of these tastings are co-hosted with the brand's owners as well.  Now that is a great pairing!

Speaking of pairing, Aarti Khosla will entice your sweet tooth with her richly decadent confections.  Aarti, who owns Le Rouge Chocolates in Westport, Ct, creates her heavenly treats by hand.  Originally born and raised in India, Aarti worked and traveled the world before following her passion to become a chocolatier. Once she did, the unique flavors and designs tempted everyone's palates, and Khosla's business went from selling at farmer's markets to owning a brick and mortar store.  In fact, her chocolates are so remarkable that she's won numerous "Best Of" awards from Connecticut-based magazines.  So if you're craving richly decadent chocolates, make sure to stay tuned for the full hour of Food, Farms, & Chefs!

Night Out: When I Don't Feel "Pretty" and Food Thoughts

Night Out: When I Don't Feel "Pretty" and Food Thoughts

In this episode I share about a fun (and unusual) night out in December that gave a lot to consider. From free drinks to toxic masculinity and body comments, it was quite the night with lots of laughter sprinkled throughout. I also share moments of open recovery in which I've struggled with food thoughts, body image, and exercise pressure. Sharing the real thoughts and struggles to remind us all that recovery is a roller coaster with highs and lows.

Needle Spiking: Is It Happening In Australia?

Needle Spiking: Is It Happening In Australia?

With restrictions finally lifted across Australia, many of us look forward to a night out or a house party with friends, but recent reports from the UK of young women being injected with an unknown substance in bars and clubs has caused widespread concern.

Drink spiking has been on our radar as a risk for many years, but is it still common or might this new form of drugging people be taking over?

The Quicky speaks to an expert in spiking and a young woman who was a victim of this despicable crime to find out how concerned we should be when we venture out into the night, and what we can do to protect ourselves and our mates.
