Chapter Fifty-Three - Jon 7 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Jon and company head into the Frostfangs. Jon spies on the wildlings through Ghost's eyes. Ghost is hurt, but Qhorin is happy that they’ve seen enough and they high-tail it back toward the remainder of the Night's Watch. Simon and Mackelly throw another log on the campfire.

    Chapter Review:
Jon Snow speaks with Qhorin Halfhand as they continue to climb through the Skirling Pass. Jon admits that he freed Ygritte. Qhorin isn’t mad. Qhorin said if he had really wanted her dead he would have had Ebben do it. This way, he was able to gauge Jon as a man. They also discuss Mance Rayder. He was born a wildling, but became a great ranger. His treason was just going home.

Jon sleeps while Ghost hunts. In his dreams, Jon speaks with Bran who speaks through a weirwood tree. Bran tells Jon to open his third eye to see better. At that point, Jon enters Ghost’s mind and sees the wildling camp further ahead. It’s vast and he sees a lack of discipline, but some military training going on. He also sees a giant riding a mammoth. An eagle swoops down and attacks Ghost, Jon wakes with a yelp.

Qhorin questions Jon at length about his dream. They continue toward the wildlings, but en route, they see Ghost injured with talon marks on his back. They patch him up and Qhorin announces that they have seen enough. They head back down the pass and leave Squire Dalbridge to hold the choke point with as many arrows as they have.

Chapter Fifty-One - Jon 6 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Jon and Co. climb the Skirling Pass into the Frostfang Mountains. They spot wildling lookouts and after a harrowing nighttime climb they capture a wildling girl. Qhorin orders Jon to kill the girl but Jon can't do it and lets her go. Simon and Mackelly discover the real reason the pale-blue t-shirts are our best-selling merch.

    Chapter Review:
Qhorin Halfhand’s crew sees the light of a fire up ahead. Wildling lookouts have risked the light for some warmth. They won’t get much from Qhorin. He sends Stonesnake and Jon Snow to climb around the watchers and silence them before they can raise the alarm. Jon orders Ghost to stay behind.

The climb is very dangerous, but the two arrive just above the wildlings’ position and drop on them unannounced. The two men are quickly dispatched and Jon grapples with the third figure who was sleeping. It turns out to be a young woman named Ygritte. Stonesnake gives the signal and the rest of the party to join them.

Ygritte tells the tale of Bael the Bard and why she and Jon share blood. He’s somewhat taken with her, she’s made of tougher stuff. The Halfhand knows what has to be done and leaves Jon to kill Ygritte. The old softy can't do it, but won’t desert his companions as she suggests. He lets her go.

Chapter Forty-Three - Jon 5 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Forty-Three - Jon 5 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Qhorin Halfhand and his crew arrive at the Fist of the First Men. They’ve seen some action but gained valuable intelligence. Mance Rayder is seeking some magic to bring down the Wall. Three small groups will scout ahead and do what they can to prevent this. Mackelly and Simon long for the comforts of Castle Black.

    Chapter Review:
Jon Snow is roused from sleep by horns of the Night’s Watch. One blast means that it is rangers returning. Qhorin Halfhand has arrived with 100 men from the Shadow Tower. There are injuries and missing horses. The Halfhand recognizes Jon, he knew Ned and Ned’s father, and Jon shares the Stark look.

Mormont and Qhorin discuss what to do. Intelligence suggests that Mance Rayder has gathered a significant host, but that it comprises as many women and children as fighting men. Also that he might be seeking some device in the Frostfangs that would allow him to breach the Wall. Even if his plans are more worldly, he, as a former brother of the Night’s Watch, knows the strengths and weaknesses so he poses a risk.

Mormont considers re-garrisoning some of the abandoned castles along the Wall. Meanwhile, Qhorin will take a handpicked crew into the Frostfangs to find the truth of what’s going on, and if necessary put a stop to it. Jon gets the call.

Chapter Thirty-Four - Jon 4 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Thirty-Four - Jon 4 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

The Night’s Watch arrive at the Fist of the First Men, an ancient fort. Mormont decides to wait there as it is a good spot for friends to find them, and equally a fine place to keep an eye on their enemies. Ghost acts weird and leads Jon to a cache of dragonglass weapons. Mackelly and Simon feel the keenness of the edges.

    Chapter Review:
The Night’s Watch reach the Fist of the First Men. A rocky outcropping that pierces the canopy of the Haunted Forest. It was used as a fort in ancient times, and it is very defensible. Ghost is very unhappy as they climb towards the summit, and Mormont tells Jon to let the direwolf run free. Ghost does not need a second invitation.

The position is advantageous, with steep slopes and basic walls, but Jon is concerned that without a water source they could not survive a siege. Mormont orders cisterns to be dug and water brought up from a nearby stream. That will keep the men busy.

Mormont wants the rangers to stay close, not crossing the Milkwater River to the west, beyond which are the Frostfang Mountains, which according to Craster are where the Wildlings have gathered under the banner of Mance Rayder. Jon is worried that this limits their ability to find his uncle Benjen, but Mormont points out that it's easier for one man to find three hundred than the reverse. Plus, they need to wait somewhere conspicuous so that Qhorin Halfhand and his men from the Shadow Tower will find them.

Ghost continues to freak out and Jon eventually follows him down the hill where they discover a significant cache of dragonglass weapons wrapped in a Night’s Watch cloak that doesn’t seem very old.

Chapter Twenty-Six - Arya 6 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Arya is in the clutches of the Lannisters. Needle is taken from her, the secret of her gender is revealed, and she loses all faith in her ability to water dance. She starts to chant a list of the people who’ve killed her loved ones. It’s getting long. Simon and Mackelly mull it all over.

    Chapter Review:
Arya, Hot Pie, and Gendry are captives of Gregor Clegane’s men. They’re held in the village while the Tickler tortures and kills villagers for information as to the location of any treasure and intelligence about Beric Dondarrion’s increasingly legendary force. No amount of ingratiating or cooperation saves the villagers.

Arya’s at a low ebb. She feels that, as a water-dancer, she shouldn’t have been captured. Another soldier called Polliver has Needle, severing her last tie to her family. Each night she whispers the names of all the people responsible for the deaths that have blighted her life since she left Winterfell.

Eventually, the group moves out with the prisoners in tow. All the fighting age men are slain. Gendry only survives because his trade is useful to the Lannisters. On the march, Arya has to pee, and Hot Pie is astonished to discover her gender. Nobody else cares. Harrenhal is a scary place where the towers look like melted candles. Arya is assigned to the Wailing Tower as servant to Weese the understeward. He’s sounds like he could be bad news.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Arya Stark - Younger daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark.
Yoren - Man of the Night’s Watch in King’s Landing seeking recruits and supplies. He died at the hands of Amory Lorch.
Gendry - Recruit to the Night’s Watch. Former armorer’s apprentice. Bastard son of King Robert Baratheon.
Hot Pie - Recruit of the Night’s Watch.
Amory Lorch - Cruel Lannister knight. Implicated in the murder of Rhaegar Targaryen’s two children. Raiding the Riverlands with 300 men.
Ser Gregor Clegane - The Mountain that Rides. Sandor Clegane's older brother. Bannerman to Tywin Lannister.
Beric Dondarion - Lord of Blackhaven. Sent by Ned Stark to arrest Gregor Clegane for his crimes in the Riverlands. Continues to harass the Lannister force

    Chapter Twenty-Three - Jon 3 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Twenty-Three - Jon 3 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

The Night’s Watch visit Craster’s Keep. Craster provides some information, but one of his pregnant daughter-wives recruits Jon to rescue her from her fate. Jon doesn’t think they can help. Simon and Mackelly ponder Gilly’s future.

    Chapter Review:
The Night’s Watch arrive at Craster’s Keep. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont warns all not to interact with Craster’s wives. The keep is awful, little more than a midden heap. Jon Snow joins Mormont in the “hall.” The squalid building stinks, and Craster sits in the only chair.

Mormont quizzes Craster about Benjen Stark, but he’s not been through these parts. The last crows Craster has seen were Waymar Royce and crew. Their host knows why the villages are empty. Mance Rayder has been inviting wildlings to join him. He has intel about the King Beyond the Wall and trades it for a new axe.

Outside, Ghost terrorizes a young pregnant girl named Gilly. Jon calls him off. Jon then sets up a tent and makes his own food so that he owes Craster nothing. Later Gilly approaches Jon and ask him to take her when he leaves. If her baby proves to be a boy, Craster will give him to the Others. Jon feels bad, but he cannot help.

As the Night’s Watch leave for the Frostfangs following the map that Sam created with Craster’s help, Jon asks Mormont about Craster’s sons. Mormont admits that the Night’s Watch know that he gives the sons up to the woods. But they don’t have dominion over him.

Chapter Nineteen - Arya 5 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Arya and the surviving recruits bury Yoren, subsist on acorn paste, and spy a village that is not completely abandoned. Reconnaissance gets Arya, Gendry, and Hot Pie captured by Gregor Clegane’s men. Weasel escapes and Lommy meets his maker. Simon and Mackelly grope for positives.

    Chapter Review:
Arya Stark, Gendry, Hot Pie, Lommy, and Weasel (the new name given to the crying girl) head back to the holdfast in the daylight. They bury Yoren and find three comrades still alive. Kurz succumbs to a wound, and the other two abscond rather than throw their lot in with Arya’s crew. Lommy is injured and must be carried. Weasel has stopped crying.

Continuing north around the western edge of the God’s Eye, they find a village not entirely abandoned. Arya and Gendry check it out and determine that it is Lannister troops who inhabit it. Gendry is captured, so Arya returns to the others to solicit Hot Pie’s help in a daring rescue mission. Lommy wants to abandon Gendry - but Arya convinces Hot Pie to help.

Hot Pie makes enough noise as they enter the village to have them both immediately captured. Arya comes face to face with Gregor Clegane, the Mountain that Rides. Hot Pie cracks under questioning and leads the troops back to Lommy. Weasel has scarpered, and the Lannisters are unwilling to carry Lommy, so they run him through.

Chapter Fourteen - Arya 4 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter Fourteen - Arya 4 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Arya and her fellow recruits spend the night in an abandoned holdfast south of the God’s Eye. Tywin’s second favorite goon, Amory Lorch, and his gang arrive in the night and attack. Arya does all she can in battle, but eventually flees with Gendry and a couple of others, having paused to throw Jaqen H’ghar a lifeline. Simon and Mackelly worry for her future.

    Chapter Review:
The Night’s Watch recruits are stymied by an uncrossable river. They head north to the point of difluence with the Gods Eye lake. They find an unharmed village, utterly abandoned. No boats or anything useful. Gendry suggests that they could build rafts to get across to Harrenhal. Hot Pie fears ghosts, but Arya Stark sees her salvation: Lady Whent and knights will be waiting and she can reveal her true identity.

Yoren wants to sleep on it, inside the small holdfast. Their sleep is disturbed by the arrival of a large mounted force that rides through the village setting fire to the homes. Amory Lorch verbally jousts with Yoren before setting his men to attack the terrified recruits.

Arya acquits herself honorably enough, but there’s only one winner between 300 hardened soldiers and 30 trembling recruits, regardless of the 10-foot high walls. She, Gendry, Hot Pie, an injured Lommy, and the crying girl use a tunnel from the burning stables to escape. Before she leaves, she tosses an axe to the three prisoners who would otherwise burn to death.

Chapter Thirteen - Jon 2 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter Thirteen - Jon 2 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

The Great Ranging has found a fourth abandoned wildling village under a great weirwood tree. There is no sign of struggle or clue as to their motivations. Mormont sends word to Maester Aemon via one of Sam’s ravens and the ranging continues north. Mackelly and Simon try to keep warm.

    Chapter Review:
The wildling village is deserted. Only some charred human bones remain within the mouth of the weirwood tree that shades the entire village. Ser Jeor Mormont wonders why the wildlings burn their dead, but Jon Snow has a pretty good idea. This is the fourth abandoned village they’ve found. So Mormont pens a message for Maester Aemon.

Jon delivers the message to Sam, who is supervising the ravens. He’s trying to teach them to talk. Sam is warming to the ranging, as there don’t appear to be any wildlings around. That which reassures Sam is troubling to everybody else.

Jon and the Old Bear discuss what Benjen Stark would have done had he found the villages deserted, and they conclude that he would have continued on to try to solve the mystery. This gives Jon some hope. Their force will soon be swelled to 300 when they rendezvous with Qhorin Halfhand’s men from the Shadow Tower. In the meantime, the trek north continues.

Chapter Nine - Arya 3 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter Nine - Arya 3 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Arya and the Night’s Watch recruits continue their trek north into territory that is increasingly ravaged by war. They veer off the Kingsroad to avoid trouble, but progress is slow. Arya sneaks out of camp to pee and is confronted by a pack of wolves. They scare her but leave her unharmed. Simon and Mackelly survey the landscape.

    Chapter Review:
Yoren has left the Kingsroad and is circling around the western shore of the God’s Eye. This road barely deserves the name and progress is very slow. Provisions have run out, so Yoren puts two convicted poachers to use, ranging ahead and bringing back dinner. The locals don’t want to share their crops and Yoren is forced to pay for that which should be given to the Night’s Watch for their service to the realm.

They see more and more war damage. Ruined crops, burned keeps. They take in a woman who has lost an arm and a little girl who cries constantly. The woman succumbs to her wounds and is buried. The recruits become more fearful and open-up to one another. They speculate as to Gendry’s secret and Lommy comes quite close suggesting he might be Ned Stark’s bastard.

Arya sneaks out of camp to use the loo, and is confronted by a pack of wolves. She reaches for Needle, but the wolves leave her in peace. She confides the story of her direwolf Nymeria to Yoren and tries to sleep as wolves howl and humans scream.

Arya Stark - Younger daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark.
Yoren - Man of the Night’s Watch leading recruits from King’s Landing north to the Wall.

Chapter Six - Jon 1 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter Six - Jon 1 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Sam has found a number of maps that will come in useful for the planned great ranging of the Night’s Watch. Lord Commander Mormont shares maester Aemon’s past with Jon. Simon and Mackelly wrap up warm and consider the prospects.

    Chapter Review:
Jon finds Sam in the Castle Black library surrounded by books and parchments. Sam has been gone all night and missed breakfast. He was sent for maps of the North, but was swept away by the feast of knowledge he found. Jon’s unimpressed.

They head to Lord Commander Mormont’s rooms. Jeor is in dispute with the acting first-ranger Thoren Smallwood, who believes that the Lord Commander should stay home. Mormont pulls rank and dismisses Thornwood. He’s also disappointed by the age and content of the maps.

Sam is terrified of the commander, but needs to find a bit of courage as he’ll be joining the great ranging. Mormont talks Jon through maester Aemon’s family history, in the hopes that the aging maester’s example of loyalty to his vows, in the face of overwhelming temptations, will resonate with Jon. Snow knuckles down for the ranging.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:

Chapter Five - Arya 2 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter Five - Arya 2 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Arya and the Night’s Watch recruits are badgered by Gold Cloaks intent on returning one of their number to King’s Landing. Despite Arya’s concerns, it is Gendry who they’re after. He’s saved by the bravery of Yoren and his fellow recruits. Simon and Mackelly consider the implications.

    Chapter Review:
Arya’s journey north with Yoren and the latest members of the Night’s Watch is punctuated by signs of war. Roadside graves, refugees fleeing south, and opportunistic profiteers. A stop at an inn provides an opportunity for all who have nothing to hide to get a bath. Conversation is of Robb Stark’s success and the dangers of the road to come.

Arya goes outside and begins to befriend one of the three chained prisoners. He’s from Essos and introduces himself as Jaqen H’ghar. He apologizes for the manners of his friends Biter and Rorge. Arya gets feisty, Jaqen is impressed, and Gendry reminds her not to fraternize with the prisoners.

A contingent of Gold Cloaks arrives, looking for one of the recruits. Arya hides with Gendry explaining that she is who they seek. Yoren faces them down, with help from the other recruits, who rally to protect their comrade. Turns out that they were after Gendry. He’s puzzled as to why, and also why Arya thought it would be her. Yoren makes contingency plans for when the Gold Cloaks return in greater numbers - horses for Arya and Gendry, and orders to ride north as fast as possible if trouble comes.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Arya Stark - Younger daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark.
Yoren - Man of the Night’s Watch in King’s Landing seeking recruits and supplies.
Gendry - Recruit to the Night’s Watch. Former armorer’s apprentice. Bastard son of King Robert Baratheon.
Hot Pie - Recruit of the Night’s Watch.
Lommy - Recruit of the Night’s Watch.
Jaqen H’ghar - unwilling recruit of the Night’s Watch, from the dungeons of King’s Landing.
Biter and Rorge - Jaqen H’ghar’s cellmates on the journey north from the King’s Landing dungeons.

Chapter One - Arya 1 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter One - Arya 1 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Arya is heading north with Yoren and the new Night’s Watch recruits, including Gendry - Robert Baratheon’s bastard son. Arya gets into a fight with Hot Pie whose bulk proves no match for her training. Yoren is displeased and beats her. The boys spend 20 mins discussing how they're going to stretch this out to 50 mins.

    Chapter Review:
Arya is headed north with Yoren and the new recruits (voluntary, and considerably less so) to the Night’s Watch. She’s making her water away from the road, but with her new haircut she’s passing for a boy. Her traveling companions are a pretty sorry bunch, but she’s afraid of the three that are chained in a wagon. There are several wagons, as Yoren is bringing enough materials to keep the Night’s Watch supplied for the long winter to come.

Hot Pie, one of the better fed recruits, tries to take Needle from her, and she uses her Syrio Forel training to beat him within an inch of his life. At one point, Gendry (also headed to the Wall) saves her from getting brained by Hot Pie. Perhaps a friendship in the making?

Yoren is not best pleased, but beats her away from the others, so that he can go easy on her (she cannot sit down for several days, so she’s not sure how easy he went). He explains that her father’s beheading was a derailed plan - and she knows who is to blame: Joffrey.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Arya Stark - Younger daughter of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark.
Joffrey Baratheon - King of the seven Kingdoms. Bastard son of Cersei Lannister and her twin Jamie.
Syrio Forel - Former First Sword of Braavos. Fencing instructor to Arya Stark.
Robb Stark - Eldest son of Ned and Cat Stark. The newly minted King in the North.
Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night’s Watch.
Sansa Stark - Eldest daughter of Ned and Cat Stark. Betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon.
Yoren - Man of the Night’s Watch, in King’s Landing seeking recruits and supplies.
Gendry - Recruit to the Night’s Watch. Former armorer’s apprentice. Bastard son of King Robert Baratheon.

    Chapter Sixty-Six - Bran 7 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Sixty-Six - Bran 7 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Bran and Rickon both dream that their father visits them in the crypts. Maester Luwin tries to reassure them that dreams are just dreams. Osha is not so sure, especially when a raven arrives with news from King's Landing. Simon and Mac examine the dark words.

    Chapter Review:
Bran Stark and maester Luwin watch the remnants of the north being trained by Ser Rodrick Cassel. They don't look great. Bran wants to visit the crypts, but Hodor won't go down there. He explains to Luwin that last night he dreamt he talked to his father down there. They agree to visit, with Osha taking the Hodor role.

Bran talks Osha through the family history as they walk past his ancestors, she's a little bit impressed. When they reach Ned's waiting tomb, they are attacked by Shaggydog. Luwin receives a nasty cut, and both Summer and Shaggy are bloodied by the time Rickon calls off the fight. He too has dreamt of his father in the crypts.

They return to Luwin's tower to patch him up and continue the lessons in history and dreams versus reality. Suddenly the wolves howl as a battered looking raven lands on the ledge. Without reading it, Osha and the boys know exactly what news the dark wings bring.

Chapter Sixty - Jon 8 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter Sixty - Jon 8 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Jon gets a pardon and a shiny new sword from Jeor Mormont. His buddies are all excited but Jon is preoccupied with news from the south. Maester Aemon sympathizes and reveals a shocker. Simon and Mackelly continue their watch.

    Chapter Review:
Jon has burned his hand in finally killing off Othor. While he’s nursing it, Lord Commander Mormont presents him with a sword. It is the family sword of the Mormonts, it too was burned but the Valyrian steel survived. The new handle replaces the bear with a direwolf. Jon decides to keep the name, Longclaw, as it works as well for a wolf as a bear.

Even better news for Jon is that Alliser Thorne has been sent to King’s Landing to make the case for more troops, with the help of Jafar Flowers’ trusty and un-decomposing hand. Jon is very concerned about the latest rumors from the south: Robb calling the banners and marching south to fight for their father.

Jon is summoned to help maester Aemon feed his ravens. The old man reminds Jon of his vows. Jon doesn’t think Aemon understands, but the maester reveals that he is Aemon Targaryen so, yeah, he’s had a few family setbacks that he has had to endure in his time at the wall.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Eddard "Ned" Stark - Erstwhile hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and deceased King Robert's closest friend. Currently languishing in a King’s Landing cell for treason.
Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night’s Watch.
Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night’s Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow.

    Chapter Fifty-Two - Jon 7 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Fifty-Two - Jon 7 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Jon and a delegation from the Night's Watch find the bodies of Othor and Jafer Flowers near the Godswood. They bring them back to Castle Black for examination, but Othor’s story is not quite done yet. Jon and Ghost save Lord Commander Mormont, which is a good job, because Jon had been very naughty. The boys discuss Jon’s failings.

    Chapter Review:
Jon, Sam, and the senior members of the Night's Watch find the bodies that Ghost discovered. They are rangers from Benjen Stark’s party. Sam goes all CSI: They seem to have been dead a while, but they haven’t rotted. Mormont is troubled and wants Maester Aemon to examine them, despite the misgivings of some of the men.

When they return to Castle Black, a raven has brought news of Robert’s death and Eddard Stark’s treason. Ser Alliser mock’s Jon as not only a bastard but the bastard-son of a traitor. Jon loses his temper and his liberty.

But in the night, Ghost wakes Jon. Something is amiss. They trace the trouble to Mormont’s quarters, where Othor is up and about - and up to no good. Jon and Ghost manage to defeat him with fire. Hopefully regaining the Lord Commander’s good graces.

    Chapter Forty-Nine - Eddard 14 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Forty-Nine - Eddard 14 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

The King is dead. Long live King Joffrey? King Stannis? King Renly? Whoever! Ned and Cersei confront in the throne room. Ned is sure he has the manpower advantage to win the day, but then Petyr Baelish delivers a lasting lesson in the school of "Don't trust anyone." Mackelly and Simon take sides.

    Chapter Review:
Eddard Stark is awoken to a Lannister show of strength outside his window, and the day only goes downhill from there. At breakfast, he allows Arya to have one last "dance lesson" but refuses Sansa a final goodbye with prince Joffrey, before the girls board the ship headed for Winterfell. The news causes an outraged Sansa to storm off.

The day's downward spiral continues when Grand Maester Pycelle arrives and announces that King Robert has died. A heavy-hearted Ned convenes the small council (apart from Renly, who having carefully weighed up the situation has scarpered from King’s Landing) and has Barristan Selmy break the seal on Robert’s will. As we know, Ned is supposed to act as Protector of the Realm until Robert’s heir comes of age.

Before Ned can obtain oaths of allegiance, the council is summoned to the presence of the new king. Ned’s helped to the throne room by Littlefinger who assures him that the gold cloaks are on the payroll.

Joffrey demands a rapid coronation. Cersei tears up Robert’s will and demands that Ned bend the knee. Instead, he reveals that Cersei’s children are not Robert’s and that the gold cloaks should escort the royal family to their rooms. The city guard do exactly what they’ve been paid to do, and kill all of Ned’s men. Ned himself is taken into custody by Littlefinger himself.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend.
King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Aside from being king, he's also Ned's lifelong best friend. Oh and now he's dead.
Renly Baratheon - King Robert's youngest brother. Lord of Storm's End and Master of Laws.
Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin, member of the Small Council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Tully.
Lord Varys - The Spider. Eunuch and Master of Whispers.
