Booze Free Bants with Buddies - Anthony 'Noddy' Hammond the sober Publican

Booze Free Bants with Buddies - Anthony 'Noddy' Hammond the sober Publican

Anthony 'Noddy' Hammond is an alcoholic.   In the depths of his active addiction, he was drinking a bottle of Jameson Whiskey, snorting half a bag of coke, and then after lunch, he was on Vodka because people couldn't smell that - well that's what his addiction told him.

As Noddy tells us, addiction is a lonely place.  He could be in a busy bar surrounded by his loved ones and feel like he was on his own.

Noddy has been sober for 2 years, he has got the light back in his life, his world has opened up, he has clarity, he has found gratitude, he is a better person in all of his relationships, and he has said goodbye to his ego.

How did he turn his life around?   Noddy spent 28 days in rehab - he entered rehab because of the pain he was putting his supportive wife Jo through.  He thought he would go to rehab and come out after 28 and be able to drink again.  But something clicked for him in rehab, and he started doing the work and hasn't stopped since.

This episode has a lot in it, it's an insightful chat about Noddy's experience in rehab, and then what the next steps were for him once he got out of rehab.

Noddy is a pioneer in the non-alcoholic drinks space, he is hosting a Pub With No Booze Event at his pub in Footscray, Victorian Hotel, for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Find all the details here https://www.melbournefoodandwine.com.au/program/the-pub-with-no-booze-8113

Booze Free Bants with Buddies - Vika Bull

Booze Free Bants with Buddies - Vika Bull

Vika Bull OAM is Australian music royalty, she is one half of the sister duo Vika and Linda Bull.  Vika spent years living a rockin' roll life style, which included booze, and lots of partying.   On Jan 28th 2022 Vika put down the bottle for one last time.

In this episode Vika shares with Breeza and Maso her drinking journey, her why of drinking and quitting, her regrets, and what life was like when she was drinking.  She speaks very openly and honestly about things she has done while drinking that she isn't proud of, and how ultimately her behaviour when drinking came between her and her sister Linda.

But it's far from doom and gloom for Vika Bull, in fact, she is just getting started.  Age is no barrier for Vika, she adores performing on stage sober and has found that she is experiencing and enjoying new experiences when performing at gigs and festivals.   Her voice has improved (the girls didn't think this was even possible), and she looks and feels so fresh!  Vika is so excited for what the future holds, Breeza and Maso will be fan girling hard in the crowd watching her at Red Hot Summer Tour in Feb.

You will want more of Vika after this ep, so grab a copy No Bull, by Vika and Linda Bull, it's a beautiful read.

Sipping on Summer Beer and Pig Trotters

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, summer is in full swing! On the show is Angela Steil, Advanced Cicerone in NYC; Chef Richard Knight from London, England; and Emree Woods from Rightside Brewing in Lawrenceville, GA.

To kick things off, Richard introduces us to his cooking background, which has taken him to quirky spots all across the world. Angela, a master in food and drink pairings, then offers up a couple of contrasting suggestions for beer and barbeque pairings. If you’re looking for something non-alcoholic, Emree has some ideas for summertime drinks.

Richard gets our mouths watering talking about rabbit paella and pork bellies, and then Jimmy challenges Angela to figure out the right drink pairing. As Richard intricately describes different dishes and Angela rattles off pairings, we start to really get a gist of which flavors in beers can help enhance a meal. To wrap things up, Jimmy learns a bit more about nonalcoholic beers from Angela and Emree, who explain how pairings depend more on carbonation than alcohol.

You Can’t Always Drink What You Want

You Can’t Always Drink What You Want

From coffee shops to cocktail bars, the world of beverages has been turned upside down by the pandemic. You can’t always drink what you want. And now, more than ever, you can’t always drink where you want. But even before Covid-19, transformations in the production line, farming practices, and workplace inclusivity have affected what we drink.

In this episode, splash into the world of beverages – from the drinks we sip on to the places we imbibe. We’ll investigate the ways access, history, legislation, and simple circumstance may limit the beverages we consume. We’ll explore how to make the most of the ingredients lying around the dustiest of liquor cabinets. And for those who are tired of making at-home drinks, we’ll hear from a North Carolina state representative and bar owners about the state of to-go cocktails. We’ll learn about the future of the American craft cider industry and its potential to diversify the labor force backed behind it. Finally, we’ll delve into the increasingly popular caffeinated drink Yaupon, whose history tells a story of cultural resilience.

77 - Ted Fleming (Partake Brewing)

77 - Ted Fleming (Partake Brewing)

This week on the Kondrat Podcast: a “Let’s Meet For A Beer” edition with Partake Brewing’s Founder and CEO Ted Fleming, who shares how a Crohn’s disease diagnosis led to him discovering a non-alcoholic beer landscape that didn’t satisfy his tastebuds, and how he’s solving that problem.

Like many Albertans, Ted was a growing craft beer enthusiast in the early 2000s as a number of craft brewers throughout the US and BC started shipping their brews into the province. However in 2005 he received a Crohn’s disease diagnosis which meant that he would need to avoid beer because of the alcohol content. Ted admits that at first he didn’t take this too seriously, a decision that caught up with him while on a trip to Greece after the birth of his daughter - playing fast and loose with his consumption habits landed him a week in the hospital.

After this he got into non alcoholic beer as a consumer, but discovered that the category was very boring. Wanting to enjoy some more variety, particularly while the variety of craft beer in the market was exploding, Ted started an online store for non alcoholic beer, brining in products from Europe with a larger variety. Running this store have him some exposure to the world of consumer packaged goods… and a foot in the door of the beer industry. Before long his customers started asking if he could get non alcoholic craft beer, so he began approaching brewers to ask if that was something they’d like to make and was largely laughed at.

With craft brewers not taking the idea seriously Ted rolled up his sleeves and got ready to find other solutions to this problem. A college in Ontario had recently started up a brewing program, and while he admits that Partake probably wasn’t the initial client that the college would have expected, it has worked out very well for both of them, allowing them to secure a government grant for R&D funds, and to bring in a microbiology PhD and a former head brewer from Labatt, which gave them a level of credibility they wouldn’t have had with a traditional contract brewer.

Once Partake was up and running in 2017 one of the big hurdles to overcome was the consumer perception of non alcoholic beer, which was made brutally obvious to Ted when he was told at a trade show that his product was “the dumbest idea ever.” And with the state of the non alcoholic category at the time, this wasn’t surprising. After all, Ted says that early on he was kind of solving his own problem of wanting a tastier non alcoholic beer.

Today Partake is available in a number of grocery and liquor stores across Canada including Sobey's, Safeway, Loblaw’s, and Superstore, has a small team in both Calgary and Toronto, and is preparing to expand into the US after having just raised $4,000,000USD in funding. It has become much more than just a non alcoholic beer that satisfies Ted’s tastebuds, and with a 2018 World Beer Awards win for best non alcoholic beer, Partake Brewing is changing the landscape of non alcoholic beer and bringing craft beer to a whole new group of people who can socialize the way they want to while still being true to the health and wellness goals.
