    Let s Dispel These 5 Persistent Myths About Nonclinical Careers

    Let s Dispel These 5 Persistent Myths About Nonclinical Careers

    In this week’s episode, John revisits a discussion of the 5 persistent myths that clinicians believe when they begin to consider a career transition.

    Physicians have been convinced by their employers and training programs that it is very difficult to leave assembly-line, corporate-style medicine for a nonclinical career because:

    1. there are no jobs;
    2. they’re not qualified;
    3. the salaries are too low;
    4. they will be abandoning patients; and,
    5. their reputations will be ruined.

    As a result, we continue to suppress our feelings and delay implementing the solution to these problems.

    In this show, John describes why these myths are wrong to enable listeners to fully embrace their pursuit of a fulfilling new nonclinical career.

    Revisiting How to Use Real Estate Investing to Go from Burnout to Financial Freedom

    This week’s episode is a replay of another popular PNC podcast episode. It ran in January 2022. In it, John interviews Dr. Ronnie Shalev.

    She is a board-certified Emergency Medicine doctor whose high-pressure job “sucked the life out of her, leaving her weary, burned out, and unable to enjoy her family, kids, and day-to-day life.” Because she was paid well, she felt bound by the “golden handcuffs,” and saw no end in sight.

    Through passive real estate investing, she was able to quit her grueling emergency room job and move into a less-demanding role at a medical device company. Now, she helps frustrated physicians who feel trapped earn income with passive real estate investments so they have more freedom and are not bound by their jobs.

    Revisiting How to Prepare For a Great Job at a Medical Device Company

    This week’s episode is a replay of the most downloaded podcast episode. It ran in early 2022. In it, John interviews Dr. Paul Hercock, the CEO of Mantra Systems.

    Paul is an expert at how to land a medical device company job, particularly in the European Union. He wrote a book about it called "Beyond The Ward: A Doctor's Guide to Careers Outside the NHS."

    During his interview, Paul explains that his company is a consultancy business that provides medical and regulatory support to medical device companies. To do so, it employs physicians as medical advisors.

    And to fill the need for physicians to fill these positions, he built a training program for physicians interested in pursuing a job in the industry. It's called the Medical Affairs Associates Program. And he describes the training system and how it prepares physicians to enter this growing field.

    Top Tips to Find Your First Nonclinical Job Using LinkedIn

    In this week’s episode, John offers advice about using LinkedIn. Most clinicians pursuing a nonclinical job have already built a LinkedIn profile. However, some of the more advanced aspects of a LinkedIn page are often overlooked.

    LinkedIn can be very useful for adding new contacts and networking with them. Since more than half of those looking for a new job find a job through a personal referral rather than by applying online, expanding one’s network will enhance your job search.

    LinkedIn also serves as a job board, with millions of job postings. And it facilitates the process of working with recruiters. John describes some of the ways in which seeking clinicians can leverage LinkedIn to find and connect with recruiters.

    5 Reasons to Consider a Healthcare Management Consulting Job

    In this week’s show, John presents a topic that has not been discussed in detail before:

    Healthcare Management Consulting jobs with prominent national and international consulting firms.

    When he worked as a hospital CMO, there was always a new consulting firm or two working for the organization. And many of the teams included physician consultants.

    During the conversation, he lists the five reasons that these jobs can be quite attractive:

    1. There is a high demand for these.
    2. Jobs are available for experienced and novice physicians, even those without board certification.
    3. Pay and benefits are very good.
    4. There is room for advancement.
    5. You will learn many new useful and transferable skills

    He also includes a free list of 25 large healthcare management consulting firms to download for those interested in pursuing one of these positions.

    What Does It Take to Pivot from Caring Pediatrician to Drug Safety Professional

    In this week’s show, Dr. Kerri Best-Sule describes how she discovered early in her clinical career that traditional medical practice does not support healthy family life.

    She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Maryland and then went on to practice outpatient pediatrics for 3 years before deciding to make her transition into the pharma industry.

    She started by working as a contracted part-time employee before deciding to move full-time into a role in Pharma Safety involving vaccines. Her temporary position helped greatly in making the transition from clinical work to Pharma Safety Associate Medical Director.

    Why You Must Wake Up Before Bad Behavior Ruins Your Career

    Why You Must Wake Up Before Bad Behavior Ruins Your Career

    In this week’s episode, John interviews Dr. Ryan Bayley. He first appeared on the show over 4 years ago to talk about his experiences as a business and success coach. Since then, the part of his practice that seems to be growing the fastest is helping to address or prevent disruptive or inappropriate behavior.

    Dr. Bayley realized that a growing number of physicians were being put on administrative leave. And their licenses to practice medicine were being suspended or revoked. When he looked for books on the subject that he could share with physicians, he couldn’t find any. So, he decided to write his own.

    That book was published recently, and Ryan joins me to cover many of the topics he wrote about. He describes why the system is becoming more dangerous, how to avoid exposing yourself, and what to do if you find yourself accused of disruptive behavior or of breaching personal boundaries.

    Behind the Scenes Look at Planning the First Nonclinical Career Summit

    In this week’s episode, John Jurica provides an overview of the factors that went into planning the first NewScript Nonclinical Career Summit.

    NewScript is an online community of clinicians looking for professional satisfaction, overcoming the stress and burnout arising out of the current healthcare system, and moving into more satisfying nonclinical and nontraditional careers. John is the co-founder with Dr. Tom Davis.

    During his presentation, John addresses several issues:

    • what inspired John and Tom to create a 3-day Summit;
    • the principles they followed during the process;
    • how they planned each of the important components of presenting a Summit, from choosing the curriculum, recruiting speakers, and creating the website, to marketing the Summit, and managing the event.

    John invited everyone to join the free live event on April 11 through 13, from 7:00 PM until 11:00 PM Eastern Time. During each 4-hour session, there will be four 30-minute presentations followed by 20 minutes of live Q&A and a short break.

    Why Your Nonclinical Job Search Is So Frustrating and Unproductive

    Why Your Nonclinical Job Search Is So Frustrating and Unproductive

    In this week’s episode, John describes why some job searches become so frustrating and unproductive. It can feel like we’re bogged down and not making any progress once we’ve decided to pursue that nonclinical position.

    Part of the explanation is that we may be expecting too much. When making such a drastic move the path is often not as straightforward as we’re expecting. And we must learn a whole new set of skills.

    Common frustrations result from NOT doing the following:

    1. Fully committing to the process,
    2. Addressing your self-limiting beliefs,
    3. Devoting insufficient time to the process,
    4. Narrowing our search to one specific job,
    5. Obtaining new skills to demonstrate your commitment,
    6. Finding and engaging a mentor or two,
    7. Growing your network and finding a sponsor at each company,
    8. Optimizing your LinkedIn profile, and,
    9. Converting your CV to a winning resumé.

    Address each of these and your job search will progress more quickly.

When her employer became part of a new organization, she decided to begin her transition from full-time practice to part-time practice and consulting while completing her master’s degree in patient safety and healthcare quality at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

    Many physicians looking for a nonclinical role are interested in the pharmaceutical industry, but concerned that a lack of clinical trial experience makes them undesirable candidates. Dr. Edwards transitioned from a clinical role as an OB-GYN into a drug safety position at a pharmaceutical company by strengthening her resume with a few straightforward activities. She’ll share the steps she took to build her resume, what she does now, and how she overcame mental barriers along the way.
