    Max Kepler's Self-Portrait (Mets Series Recap, 9/8-9/10)

For the fourth time in five series, the Minnesota Twins won more than their opponents did, taking two of three from the visiting New York Mets. With their lead in the AL Central Division at 7.5 games, David and Dan are both feeling pretty good, though they have lots of questions about who exactly will be on a postseason roster and in what capacity. They discuss the good pitching outings, especially the one from Pablo Lopez, as well as the oddities on the base paths and in the announcing booth. There is much to be said about Max Kepler's big play in Game 2 as well as how Rocco Baldelli handled the end of Game 3. They also wonder a bit about the team's Roberto Clemente Award nominee, and they look forward to a tight finish in the race for Puckett's Picks. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

Famous Hyper Artist Dwight Baird, Better Then LeRoy Neiman - Full Stop (E137)

Famous Hyper Artist Dwight Baird, Better Then LeRoy Neiman - Full Stop (E137)

Canadian Art Today, your host Paul Constable - and Paul's Guest Today is Dwight Baird.

A little about Dwight - Born and raised in Huntingdon, a small town southwest of Montreal, Canada, Dwight Baird specialized in watercolours for over twenty years and for the last fifteen years has been working in acrylics. Upon graduation with a diploma in Visual and Creative Arts from St. Lawrence College in Cornwall, Ontario, he worked briefly  as a graphic artist and then spent two years traveling and painting in Europe. These travels resulted in his first two collections of works, "A Touch of Europe", in 1983 and, "There and Back Again'.  in 1986.

During the past thirty years Baird has presented four additional series of paintings revolving around specific themes. The first, in 1989, entitled, "Newfoundland", featured  fourteen large watercolours depicting life in Canada's easternmost province. Next came, "Carny-Midway", a collection of thirty paintings and sketches focusing on the sights, sounds and smells of amusement parks and the "carny" lifestyle.

In 1993 Baird turned to baseball and presented an extensive series of over fifty original pieces entitled." For the Love of the Game", which covered all aspects of The National Pastime. Following this exhibition the artist founded "The Show Posters" and published many images in lithograph and poster format which are now well known in both the United States and Canada. In 1992 he was commissioned by Major League Baseball to complete three illustrations for the Major League Baseball All-Star Program for an article on Fantasy Baseball Camps. In 1994, the cover concept for the  Major League Baseball Program was taken from Baird's now classic image, "At the Twilight's Last Gleaming", which features a cropped image from neck to thigh of both National and American league players lined up for the pre-game National Anthem. The artist's Sports Collection continued to expand as he completed images featuring both Golf and Basketball and in 1999 he was commissioned by the NBA for the image," Twenty-nine Teams - One Dream", for the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue in New York. This image was published as an exclusive signed edition and featured  players from all NBA teams lined up for the National Anthem.

The artist's next series, entitled," Night Vision", took five years to complete and featured over fifty watercolours and sketches exploring the theme of night, full moons and neon lights.. In 1995 the Baird was commissioned by the Montreal McCord Museum for an original watercolour to be used as the feature image for the exhibition, " Play Ball Montreal!". He was  honoured in 2000 as a recipient of a Premiers Award, presented annually to graduates of Ontario colleges for outstanding accomplishment in a specific field of study (Visual Arts). For over the last ten years Baird, working in acrylics, has developed an exciting new style of contemporary realism - mixing the broad strokes of impressionism with specific detailed areas in his work. He has been working on an extensive series of pieces depicting  daily life in Cuba, documenting a time in history which will never be seen again.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #89: Anthony DiComo, co-author of The Captain: A Memoir

Baseball and BBQ Episode #89: Anthony DiComo, co-author of The Captain: A Memoir

You deserve a big bonus so we give you bonus episode 89.

Anthony DiComo is the New York Mets beat writer for MLB.com and a former chairman of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s New York chapter.  He also is an analyst for the SNY television channel and a regular contributor to the MLB Network. He has co-authored the book, The Captain: A Memoir with former NY Mets third baseman David Wright on Wright's humble beginnings and illustrious baseball career which was cut short due to injuries and a physical ailment he just could not overcome. David Wright became The Captain of the team he always rooted for due to hard work and a commitment to the game he loved.

Wright was a seven-time All-Star, a two-time Gold Glove Award winner, and a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. He holds many Mets franchise records and was nicknamed "Captain America" after his performance in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. That and so much more are what he has accomplished as a player.

DiComo gives us a good look at the player who is beloved in New York and respected throughout the rest of the country.  We miss seeing David Wright in a NY Mets uniform, but greatly enjoyed the chance to speak with Anthony.

We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards and http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #74: Jay Horwitz, Author of Mr. Met (Bonus Episode)

     Bonus Episode!  Bonus Episode!

Jay Horwitz is the New York Mets beloved, longtime public relations director and as much a part of the franchise as any of the hundreds of players who have taken the field. His humble nature precludes him from admitting to the preceding, but he has spent a lifetime perfecting his dream job and has become a major part of this storied franchise, becoming a friend and mentor to many of the players and personnel. He has written an incredible book, Mr. Met: How a Sports-Mad Kid from Jersey Became Like Family to Generations of Big Leaguers. We had a wonderful time interviewing Jay as well as reading the book and hope you will enjoy this very special bonus episode.

We conclude the show with the song, "Ace & Bobo" from our friends Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.
