We are called to live our lives in faithful obedience to the King, in an effort to represent him properly before the watching world. It’s the time of year when many people do their fantasy football drafts. Here on Doable Discipleship, we draft too – just in a different way. In 2022 we did a People of the Bible Draft and this year we set our sights on the Books of the Bible. The premise: Which 5 books of the Bible would you want if you were stranded on a deserted island. The twist: this year we introduce categories. Each person has to draft 1 book from each of the following categories: Old Testament (non-prophet), Major Prophet, Minor Prophet, Gospel, and New Testament (non-Gospel). Once a book is selected, it cannot be chosen by another person. This is a really fun episode that takes a good look at some of your favorite books of the Bible.

Welcome to Episode #109 of Way of the Bible podcast. This is our fifth of eight episodes in our fourteenth mini-series entitled, Book That Blesses | Revelation. On this episode, The Kingdom has Come, we’re going to overview Chapters 19-20 of the book of Revelation.

On our last episode we covered the fulfillment of the seventh trumpet, the pouring out of seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth and the destruction of ecclesiastical and political Babylon which ruled the world for the first and second halves of the tribulation respectively. 

Where we find ourselves in the text is Jesus has defeated all the kings and the spiritual rulers of the kings of the earth and has claimed his dominion over all the nations. Babylon has been wiped off the map. The coming world leader and the armies of the nations under his direction are gathered at Armageddon to lay siege to and destroy Jerusalem.

Based upon significant background study, the following is a plausible chronological sequence of the Campaign of Armageddon and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. It can be divided and studied as:

1. Assembling of the Allies of the Antichrist
2. Destruction of Babylon
3. Fall of Jerusalem
4. Armies of Antichrist at Bozrah
5. National Regeneration of Israel
6. Second Coming of the Messiah
7. Battle From Bozrah Ends at the Valley of Jehoshaphat
   1. During which Antichrist is slain by Messiah
8. The Victory Ascent Upon the Mount of Olives

I encourage you to do your own studies and discover the passages that go with these divisions as they’re in the prophetic texts. We’re going to focus today on what we find in today’s readings from Chapters 19 to 20.

Human beings are prone to establishing kingdoms. There are the ancient kingdoms of days gone by, and kingdoms of our modern time. There are kingdoms of wealth, prestige and power, both legal and illegal. And there are unstated personal kingdoms in our hearts and minds, where we crown ourselves as the monarchy.

Although very different, these are all types of earthly kingdoms. Earthly kingdoms never last. Why? Because every earthly kingdom carries the same weakness; the human propensity toward pride. This is why God created an eternal kingdom; evidenced in the physical realm, but empowered in the spiritual realm.

This week, we enter into our final week, studying the Book of Obadiah. As we close out Obadiah's prophecy, we'll discover the importance of choosing God's eternal kingdom over earthly kingdoms. When all of humanity finally reaches the end, only the Kingdom of the Lord will stand.

Pride left unchecked, can lead to regrettable decisions. It might not be immediate, but over time, the progression is almost predictable. If we don't douse pride with humility and reconciliation, it's fueled with bitterness, jealousy and envy.

These three conditions burn long and hot, becoming an internal inferno called malice. At that point, logic is completely replaced with emotion. If circumstance and self-justification are made available, malice has the potential to spark violence.

This week, as we continue our journey with the prophet Obadiah, we'll see how pride settled deep in the hearts of the Edomites, leading them to deplorable acts of violence. And we'll discover how pride deceives us into justifying destructive and shameful behaviours.

Pride is deceptive. It convinces you that everything is taken care of; that everything is safe and secure. Pride convinces you that you're standing on an impenetrable tower when in reality, you're standing on a glass house that could shatter at any moment.

The people of Edom found this out the hard way. Completely deceived by pride, they rejected and persecuted God's chosen people. Then God sent a messenger named Obadiah to give them the bad news, that their tower of pride was about to come tumbling down.

This week, we begin a month-long journey through the Book of Obadiah; the smallest book in the Bible, with only 21 verses. But don't let its size fool you! Although small, this minor prophet packs a punch! Obadiah brings God's message from Edom to the masses: Be humble, or be humbled.
