The Impact of Atmosphere in your spaces on Mood and Well-being : Designing Authentic and Intentional Atmospheres.

The Impact of Atmosphere in your spaces on Mood and Well-being : Designing Authentic and Intentional Atmospheres.

The podcast episode explores the concept of atmosphere in interior design and its impact on our mood and well-being. Nico begins todays episode by sharing a personal anecdote about how music and the environment can inspire creativity and set a specific mood. Nico defines atmosphere as the mood and sensorial qualities of a space that guides our feelings and informs our experiences. The importance of creating a unique atmosphere in our homes that reflects our individual emotions, experiences, and preferences is emphasized.

Nico delves into various aspects of atmosphere, starting with color psychology. And explains how different colors can evoke specific emotions and how they can be used to create a desired mood in a space. Lighting conditions are also discussed as an important factor in influencing our mood and cognitive function. The right lighting can create a warm and inviting atmosphere or a bright and energizing one.

Spatial design is another aspect of atmosphere that the Nico explores. She explains how the layout and arrangement of furniture and objects in a space can affect our behaviors and emotions. Considering the flow and functionality of a room is emphasized when designing its atmosphere.

Biophilic design, which incorporates elements of nature into built environments, is also discussed. The host explains how incorporating natural elements such as plants, natural light, and organic materials can have a positive impact on our well-being. The calming and stress-reducing effects of nature are highlighted, along with the sense of connection to the environment it can create.

The interaction between different elements in a room and how the atmosphere can affect us even if we are not consciously aware of it is emphasized, referencing a paper by cognitive scientist David Kirsch. This highlights the subconscious influence that atmosphere can have on our mood and well-being.

The role of atmosphere in shaping our perception and feelings within a space is also discussed. Our experiences of atmosphere are subjective and can vary from person to person. Considering our own preferences and emotions when designing an atmosphere is important.

Creating a mood is identified as the key to designing an atmosphere. The function of a room should be considered before deciding on the desired mood. Being authentic and intentional in the design process is emphasized, and a list of moods is offered as a downloadable for inspiration.  DM for the list!

The episode concludes with a quote by architect Louis Bargon, highlighting the role of architecture in creating aesthetic emotion and promoting well-being. This quote reinforces the idea that atmosphere is not just about aesthetics, but also about creating a space that enhances our emotional well-being.

    Episode 021 --- Benjamin Edgar

    Episode 021 --- Benjamin Edgar

Benjamin Edgar is visionary multi-disciplined designer from Chicago and happens to be one of host Chuck Anderson's oldest friends. Having formed seminal early internet blog THE BRILLIANCE! together in 2005 (later joined by Virgil Abloh in 2006), Chuck and Benjamin have a storied history and much to talk about. An overarching point of discussion in this interview focuses around beginnings and the start of an idea. Benjamin has become well known for his wide-ranging object designs including a Carrara marble clothes hanger, his infamous single cigarette holder, candles, incense holders, clothing, sculptor's stools, a stainless steel mug that weighs 2.75 lbs, and much, much more. We discuss all of this and more including a prolific 2023, daily routines & workouts impact on ideas, some dream objects Ben would love to make one day, and Ben shares how he would show Chicago to someone visiting for the first time.

Parenting Unmasked: Breaking Free from the Chains of Fear

Parenting Unmasked: Breaking Free from the Chains of Fear

In Episode 47, I give you an inside glimpse of the content for Day 1 of our recent workshop on The Four Principles for Fighting Fear, specifically in the context of parenting teenagers. As a parent, I understand how fear can sometimes hinder our ability to parent our teens effectively. That's why I want to share a personal "cheat code" for managing fear and becoming a more confident parent.

You see, parental fear is often rooted in love. We want the best for our teenagers, and we worry about their well-being. But sometimes, this fear can hold us back from making the right decisions or giving our teens the freedom they need to grow.

Learn to identify and understand your own fear triggers - the situations or thoughts that make you feel the most fearful as a parent. By recognizing these triggers, we can start to address them head-on.

Join me as we explore ways to fight fear and become more effective parents to our teenagers. Together, we can create a nurturing and supportive environment while giving us the peace of mind we deserve.

Liliane Lijn on Bernd and Hilla Becher

Liliane Lijn on Bernd and Hilla Becher

In this podcast, we invited Liliane Lijn, whose work is featured in the David and Indrė Roberts Collection to choose a piece from the collection as a starting point for a conversation.

Lilliane is one of the curatorial collaborators for Deep Horizons, our exhibition with MIMA, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, and she selected Bernd and Hilla Becher’s work Water Towers, 1972-2012 which features in the exhibition.

Liliane describes her early encounters with Bernd and Hilla Becher’s work and its impact on her practice. The conversation explores her own fascination with industrial structures, the role of fantasy and imagination in design and how she has experimented with light in her work.

Grace Schwindt and Katleen Van Langendonck

Grace Schwindt and Katleen Van Langendonck

Grace Schwindt is a German artist working with film, live performance, sculpture, and drawing. As part of Evening of Performances 2018, Grace presented The Boxer. The Boxer proposed the intimate moment of sharing physical and mental wounds as a possibility to create open social relations.

Belgian curator and academic Katleen Van Langendonck joins Grace Schwindt in conversation about Grace's practice and the crossovers between Katleen's current research into performance and the translation of the medium between visual arts and theatre.

The pair discuss the transmission of trauma and the translation of performance within different contexts with reference to Schwindt’s work. They unpick the mechanisms and methodologies used by museums and theatres to understand how each can achieve better working models when it comes to cross-disciplinary performance work.

This special edition of our 'On Togetherness' series is part of Recall: Evening of Performances (2008–2019), a year-long programme of interviews, podcasts and contributions from some of the artists who participated in the twelve editions of the celebrated Evening of Performances. Highlighting the evenings’ extraordinary legacies, we will be exploring what the next wave of contemporary performance can become with the artists who have shaped it so far.

Objects: things we covet, collect, display, share and utilise. But what do they mean as ‘stuff’ increasingly integrates with our digital lives, or even morphs into virtual worlds?

Who better to ask than Justin Peyton from Wunderman Thompson, whose BRAND N3XT platform explores the people and ideas that are working to make Web3 and Metaverse a positive force for people, business and society.

In Potluck’s latest episode, hear Justin’s thoughts on…

    ·       How he defines the Metaverse amidst all the babble

    ·       Why ‘identity brands’ lead the way in this space, but take note of ‘experience brands’ as the fast-followers

    ·       The increasingly blended interface between the physical and the digital, including concepts like digital twins and tokenised memberships

    ·       Opportunities for elevating both brand experiences and communities

    ·       And how the real experimentation - and application - is only just beginning…
