    Singin' in the Rain

    Singin' in the Rain

In 1952, just after Gene Kelly's An American in Paris was regaled with Oscar glory, producer Arthur Freed created the first "jukebox" musical that tore through the MGM songbook for unused songs and constructed a story around them set in in the late 1920s Hollywood during the transition from silent films to "talkies". Singin' in the Rain would become one of the most enduring musicals of all time and would become the launchpad for a young actress named Debbie Reynolds. But does the film deserve to prance in the puddles or is it a total wash? MovieDude Eric, Kent & Chris put on their dancing shoes to find out.

De-Extinction, Climate Change and the Future of Conservation: A Podcast with author M.R. O’Connor.

De-Extinction, Climate Change and the Future of Conservation: A Podcast with author M.R. O’Connor.

In episode 15, Doug Parsons speaks with M.R. O’Connor, author of the book, “Resurrection Science: Conservation, De-Extinction and the Precarious Future of Wild Things.” De-extinction is exactly what you think it is: bringing back extinct species using modern technology. Think Jurassic Park, but looking at more recent extinctions like the Passenger Pigeon, Wooly Mammoth and the Tasmanian Tiger.  Our conversation, much like the book, is more than that though, we talk about environmental justice, ethics and the history of conservation biology.  Each chapter in the book covers a different species and the massive efforts we take to ensure their survival: these include a Tanzanian Spray Toad, the Florida Panther, Southwest pupfish, all the way to efforts to resurrect the Passenger Pigeon. We talk about the amazing and tragic history of the Passenger Pigeon and one scientist's efforts at bringing this species back into our lives.  Is it Frankenstein meets conservation? We dig into many of the topics from the book but we also talk about their relevance to climate change and adaptation. Is it any more or less ethical to translocate a living species, impacted by climate change, than it is to bring back an extinct species. In addition, Maura talks about how journalism can and should be about covering ideas, not just historic events.  We discuss the pitfalls of conservationists emphasizing the intrinsic value of biodiversity, versus its cultural or even utilitarian value.  We also discuss the legal implications of de-extinction: what if a resurrected species preyed upon an existing endangered species? What would this mean for the Endangered Species Act?  Maura also talks about what inspired her to write this story and the amazing journey learning about these species and the fascinating cast of characters that she included in the book.  We also talk about climate change adaptation having the ability to frame conservation in a new light, to tackle old problems like habitat destruction, invasive species and air and water pollution. Our conversation will give you a sampling of the many topics covered in the book and how de-extinction will challenge us to think about conservation, adaptation and environmentalism in new and provocative ways.  Maura was a fantastic guest, explaining incredibly complex topics in an engaging and hopeful way. Please listen in!

M.R. O’Connor is a graduate of Columbia's Journalism School, she has reported from Africa, Afghanistan and Haiti, and her work has appeared in such publications as:  The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Salon, New York Times, and Slate, to name just a few. Yes, that is an amazing list and her book reflects her profound journalistic experiences.

How Similar are Kennedy and Sandra Day O'Connor?

This week's episode takes a deep dive into Justice Anthony Kennedy, including his background, his famous decisions and how similar he is other noted Republican-but-also-super-liberal Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.  Brett and Nazim also discuss how his writing on the same marriage cases may affect the transgender rights cases likely to be arriving within the next year.  The law false-starts around (04:47) but then goes for real at (07:22).

    Maude: TV's Timeless Feminist Icon

    Maude: TV's Timeless Feminist Icon

Host Cynthia Bemis Abrams digs into the highly original and occasionally controversial character of Maude Finley of "Maude," a series that was spun off from "All in the Family." Cynthia details Bea Arthur's theatrical chops and reputation that made her Lear's top choice for the role. Cynthia also touches on the controversial topics explored by the series and why it became a sought-after cameo role for big name stars.

Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard To Find"

"G.G. Allin could have been a Flannery O'Connor character." Charlie & Chris discuss the murderous short story "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" and the difference between an author's intent and a reader's response. Why isn't this considered a horror story? And is it punk rock?

    Ep.38 Point Blank (1967) Vs. Payback (1999)

Two movies based on The Hunter by Donald E. Westlake under the pen name Richard Stark brought Westlake's most famous character, Parker, to the silver screen, but they wouldn't be actually called Parker. Westlake famously protected the character and the name Parker wouldn't be used until after his death when Jason Statham starred in a movie title after the titular character.

Point Blank (1967) with Lee Marvin starring as Walker/Parker in a very ethereal adaptation of the novel alongside Angie Dickinson, Keenan Wynn, Caroll O'Connor, and John Vernon was the first to adapt the novel, although now in a contemporary late 60's setting. Near the dawn of the millennium Mel Gibson would star in another contemporary take on the novel in Payback (1999) co-starring Gregg Henry, Maria Bello, David Paymer, Deborah Kara Unger, William Devane, Lucy Liu, Kris Kristofferson, and James Coburn.

While adapting the same material, these two films are very different. Invasion of the Remake is the only place where Lee Marvin will be fighting Mel Gibson to see which is the better Parker.

This episode is dedicated in the memory of Darwin Cooke who passed away only two days prior to the recording of this episode. He adapted many of the Parker novels into graphic novel form and did them with a passion for the character that may have only been rival to that of Westlake himself. He will be missed.

We don't ask for money for the podcast currently but if you enjoyed this episode donate a few bucks to the American or Canadian Cancer Society. In Darwin Cooke's own words "F*ck Cancer!", so let's help put an end to it. Thanks.

    Ep.37 Remaking Rawhead Rex (1986)

When an old god-monster is resurrected, a grieving family seeks to stop it before it kills everyone in the town. Clive Barker's short story from the Books of Blood, Rawhead Rex (1986) also became his first story to hit the silver screen and he hated it! This lead him to take a more controlling roll on the Hellraiser film. On this episode we take a look at what went wrong, how we might bring it back to the silver screen and do honor to the source material.

Movement Research Studies Project, "What I've Learned about Choreography from Watching Movies, Films (and TV)" - October 6, 2015
    Conceived by Melinda Ring
    Moderated by Ryan Hill
With panelists Layla Childs, Tere O’Connor, Melinda Ring, Sonya Robbins and Larissa Velez-Jackson

How do the things we watch inform our dance making? What have our (guilty) pleasures, high and low, taught us about form, timing, structure, etc? Does our connection to TV, film and movies keep us attuned to this moment’s mind-image zeitgeist, and conversely, does a lack of attention to these mediums create a gap in relevance of this art form to contemporary culture? Panelists discussed their perspective on these questions followed by a group conversation with everyone present.
