492: Life After Prison with Jesse Crosson

492: Life After Prison with Jesse Crosson

There are 2.3 million people incarcerated in the United States, and another four million on parole or probation. When you factor in families of inmates, prison employees, and infrastructure, we’re talking about billions of dollars annually and tens of millions of lives affected daily.

My guest on this week’s show is a violent crime offender and former inmate. When I first heard what he had done, my initial thought was, “Lock him up and don't let him out.” Probably, many of you will feel that way. But that’s not possible and it’s not a solution. Crime, and even violent crimes, are part of society. The only hope is that our correctional facilities are actually helping people reform.

    On this week’s show:

    • Why many people have no access to mental health services
    • How drugs are smuggled into prison
    • Why most have no access to college education
    • Why the correctional system is not doing much in the way of correcting

    ABOUT OUR GUEST

Jesse Crosson was recently released from prison and is the founder of Pri-Zen.com. He’s in the process of (re)building his life and is doing advocacy work while pursuing advanced degrees to help people inside the system.

    When Offenders Go Free

    When Offenders Go Free
One of my earlier childhood memories is my mom watching a show that she loved to watch: Perry Mason. If you are unfamiliar with the show, imagine a Law and Order show before there was Law and Order. I don't know if you're like me but I absolutely love a good courtroom drama.

However, there is one part that I can't stand: when the bad guy gets away with it. Most of the time, these courtroom drama shows wrap it all nice, neat, and pretty in a bow. Although, there are some times that the murderer or the offender gets away with it.

You and I are that offender.

I was reading in the book of Romans just the other day and in Romans 3, it says:

As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” - Romans 3:10-12

That includes every last one of us, but here's the thing. Our standing before God does not depend on our actual guilt or innocence. Our standing before God depends on God's justification. God, because of Jesus, has declared each and every one of us not guilty. Even though we're guilty, Paul wrote:

"What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" - Romans 8:31-32

Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It's God who justifies! Who then is the one who condemns? No one! Why? Because Jesus is standing in front of God as the perfect defense attorney arguing for us and taking our sentence. Isn't that incredible? You're standing before God does not depend on whether or not you did it. You did it. Your standing before God is blameless because of what Jesus did.

#1 Introduction to the Training Cave podcast!

#1 Introduction to the Training Cave podcast!
Training Cave is an amateur boxing club that is based in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

This episode is an introduction to the podcast which will be used to tell our story along the way. From the work we currently do in the gym to the activities that we are providing within our community and what we plan to do in the near future.

The gym was founded over two years ago, during that time we have developed a boxing team and built a great group of coaches. In 2019 we have started to work externally and are providing activities to young people in Birstall and Batley.

Five other episode have been pre recorded and will be released weekly. These include:
    - Coaches and the impact they have on young peoples lives.
    - What you need to know if you wish to compete in amateur boxing
    - A parent interview! We talk about his son and daughter that both train with us, the challenges they have faced and how sport has helped them.
    - How every kid deserves a chance, regardless of background or where they come from.
    - Girls boxing and what we are doing to increase participation.

28 - How One Counselor Helps Ex-Offenders Start the New Year with New Life

If you believe people deserve a chance at redemption, then you’ll want to hear what one counselor is doing to help ex-offenders find their way back into society. For starters, they don’t go home right after jail. Instead, they move into a home for recovering addicts, then dive head first into a rigorous program. Bev Tauke shares: "And what they realize is that I’m not this big clump of damaged goods; I’m not this loser. I’m someone that went through something that was very traumatic. I didn’t have the tools needed as an adult to fix it as I should have, but now I have that opportunity."

    Ep 1 - Fat Offenders

The premiere first episode of the HQTA Podcast!

Hard Questions: Tougher Answers is an enlightening comedy podcast dedicated to answering the world's strangest out of the box questions!

In this debut episode we discuss whether it would be easier to spend the next year as an obese shut-in or a registered sex offender.  Next we dive into the question whether one would rather live a life devoid of pleasure, or instead lead a happy life which ends in a horrific way.  Finally we finish up by debating the pros and cons of what happens when the simple act of burping or farting takes a sharp turn into a messy direction.

    Sex Offenders and Facebook

    Sex Offenders and Facebook

There is a lot to unpack with the case of Packingham v. North Carolina, a First Amendment case that asks whether or not the government can criminalize a sex offender's use of social media and other popular websites.  This week, Brett and Nazim discuss how this plays into general Free Speech Law, Due Process considerations, and ex post facto precedent.  This week stays pretty on topic, so the law generally starts at (02:45).

Episode 8: Compassion for the Homeless

Episode 8: Compassion for the Homeless
In Episode 8 of Street View, you meet Mike Faenza, President of the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance (MDHA), a non-profit that serves as the coordinating entity for the $16 million in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding shared among forty-four area homeless service agencies. In addition to stewarding these funds, MDHA is responsible for tracking the outcomes of these agencies and providing recommendations for improvements. Their ultimate goal: to end homelessness in Dallas. It's quite the mission, but according to Mike, "On one hand we feel like we are making a big difference. On a bad day we feel like we are bailing out the ocean with a teaspoon.” Mike addresses questions about housing from homeless guests, Don Foreback and Leon Holeman, both of whom struggle with steady employment and housing options. There is a serious shortage of affordable housing for the poor and homeless in Dallas with 20,000 people on a waiting list, the maximum allowed on the list, leaving thousands more waiting to get on the waiting list. Ultimately, the conversation turns to the need for increased community awareness and a change in public perception regarding homelessness and those experiencing it.
