Book Vs. Movie: The Gift of the Magi and The Gift of Love
The Original O’Henry Shorty Story Vs. the 1978 TV Movie

    O. Henry's The Gift of the Magi is a timeless short story that teaches us the true meaning of love during the holidays. The story follows Della Dillingham, who has only $1.87 to buy a Christmas gift for her husband, James. She decides to sell her beautiful hair to buy him a chain for his watch. However, James has sold his watch to buy her a fancy hair comb. The story shows that true love has no price and that her hair will grow back one day.
In 1978, a movie adaptation titled The Gift of Love was released, starring Marie Osmond and Timothy Bottoms. Osmond plays Beth, who is engaged to Alfred (James Woods) but is secretly in love with Rudi Miller (Bottoms), who is not wealthy. The movie follows the couple as they spend their first Christmas together and explores their challenges.

Two workplace rivals. One festive competition. And a romance that upends it all. Graphic designer Mackenzie Graham looks forward to two things every December—Christmas celebrations and the annual promotion handed out to one employee at the end of the year. In fact, at her office, the employee demonstrating the most Christmas spirit is likely to win the job. Crippled by social anxiety, Mackenzie never thought she’d be a contender in the holiday competition, so how exactly has she found herself dueling her workplace crush with wrapping paper tubes and tinsel as her weapons of choice for a much-needed raise?

Jeremy Fletcher’s life is meticulously planned out, including how he will win this year’s promotion and take his career to the next level. Plus, now that he’s the guardian of his late sister’s children, the raise will help him care for his twin niece and nephew. However, there is one thing he didn’t plan for—the spunky Mackenzie Graham, who catches his eye and throws him off his game. She’s Jeremy’s fiercest competition this year, and if he doesn’t get his head on straight and soon, the promotion isn’t the only thing he will lose to Mackenzie. Ep. 744, Crisis of Conscience, 3 short stories by O. Henry

Ep. 744, Crisis of Conscience, 3 short stories by O. Henry

A “shop-girl”, a thief, and a drunkard each encounter a crisis of conscience. How will they measure up? O. Henry, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.

Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.

Thank you to all of our financial supporters. We couldn’t do this without you.

I’m happy to announce that based on downloads, we are in the top 1% of all podcasts! And the thing is, we always have been.

You may notice that we don’t top the charts. Not any more, anyhow. So, why the disparity? Well, the charts are all run by algorithms, and each platform has their own. Judiciously curated titles, and professional audiobook quality are the things that we focus on. And for those who have found us – congratulations!

I don’t run ads or commercials, and I focus on things that make the listening experience truly wonderful. For 14 years now, I’ve always striven to increase the quality however I can, and thus enhance the end listener’s experience. No ads in the middle of the story, no new printer to buy at the beginning. If you like it, please lend a hand. Around 2% of the listeners donate at all, and I really like where we’ve landed. Please help us out, if you can.

    O. Henry wrote over 300 short stories, and was coined the American equivalent of Guy de Maupassant. The O. Henry award is given out each year for outstanding short stories. This was his medium, and he used it very, very well.

The stories in today’s episodes I’ve dubbed “Crisis of Conscience: Regular People and Uncomfortable Decisions” because that’s the thread all three of these stories have in common.

The first, An Unfinished Story, I really love for the craft of writing involved. In only half telling two stories, O. Henry delivers a clear and powerful message. I think it’s quite amazing.

The other two stories are more typical narratives, each setting up folks who are trying to get back up on the straight and narrow, and their terrible wrangle with the most evil adversary of all – hope. Let’s see how they do.

And now, Crisis of Conscience: Regular People and Uncomfortable Decisions, 3 short stories by O. Henry.

Episode 416 – A Very Casey Christmas (Casey, Crime Photographer)

Episode 416 – A Very Casey Christmas (Casey, Crime Photographer)

Criminals work on Christmas, but fortunately so do the ace crimesolvers of the golden age of radio! Staats Cotsworth stars as newshound and amateur sleuth Casey, Crime Photographer in a pair of holiday mysteries: "Christmas Shopping" (originally aired on CBS on December 19, 1946) and "The Santa Claus of Bum Boulevard" (originally aired on CBS on December 25, 1947). Plus, we'll hear an old time radio recreation of O. Henry's classic story "The Gift of the Magi" from The Coronet Little Show (originally aired on Mutual on December 19, 1943).

Have Yourself a Totally Rad Christmas with Gerry Davilla

Have Yourself a Totally Rad Christmas with Gerry Davilla

Have yourself a Totally Rad Christmas, Dudes!

Today's guest is THE Gerry Davilla from A Totally Rad Christmas, and as you can tell right from the beginning, this episode is far out and gnarly and... all those other 1980's terms I can't remember. It begins with my very worst impression of one of my very favorite podcasters... and it derails from there... as you'll hear in the interview, I left all the bloopers in. :-)

Gerry and I get together and we laughed a lot, we told stories, we talked about movies, about the 80's, we had some moments of loud laughter and deep thoughts about our families and a little bit about faith, too. Come sit with us by the cozy Christmas fire, and enjoy today's episode!

I share a story a listener sent me about a special memory she has of her grandpa, and then I read "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry and reflect on the story for a few moments.

There's a lot of fun you won't want to miss! Later dudes...
