The History of Golden Artist Colors, Inc.

The History of Golden Artist Colors, Inc.

The idea for the Podcast – Paint Stories – came about as we were gearing up to celebrate our 40th year of Golden Artist Colors, I had begun to gather information in various forms, most recently for a lecture at the Midland Center for the Arts in Midland, Michigan. As we moved into March and realized that much of our plans would have to be scrapped and with some unexpected time on my hands, I decided that since everyone was home bound right now, what a wonderful opportunity to connect with many of the folks that helped create the success of Golden Artist Colors! I was also able to put the earlier history of my Dad and Great Uncle Leonard Bocour into some greater context and with stories from my brother Tom, who actually worked at the shop in Manhattan, and later, joined us at Golden Artist Colors.

I couldn’t be more delighted with the response from the artists that were willing to share their stories and connections to both Bocour and Golden Artist Colors. It has brought back so many wonderful memories.

Sam Leach with Andrew Frost — Fully Automatic

Sam Leach with Andrew Frost — Fully Automatic

Throughout history, artists have always quoted and appropriated, synthesising the past and (hopefully) creating something new all their own. It is the modus operandi of award winning painter Sam Leach and is exemplified in his controversial Wynne Prize winning work based on a 17th century Dutch painting of an Italianette landscape.

No stranger to controversy, Sam Leach is now using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate new imagery based on his own catalogue of work, which he then painstakingly paints. It’s a kind of feedback loop, blending the mystical qualities of paint with digital technology.

The process raises serious questions about the future of art, culture and humanity — or what Sam calls the cultural singularity. Is this a new kind of collaboration between man and machine, giving us a new aesthetic beyond ourselves, or has the artist been subjugated as the machine’s apprentice?

Join Sam and art critic, lecturer and broadcaster Andrew Frost in this very timely, thought-provoking conversation.

Ask an Artist Interview with Michael Harding

Ask an Artist Interview with Michael Harding

In this episode of Ask an Artist Peter and Laura are in conversation with Michael Harding.  Michael makes paints!  Some of the finest on the market and is uncompromising about the quality of his products.  He started to make paints whilst still at Art School because he wanted to be able to achieve some of the effects that he saw in the works of painters from the past, these were impossible with the commercial paints that were available to him so he sought to remedy that in the paints he made.  Michael Harding Paints now have a high reputation and in this conversation you will hear some of what has driven Michael's business.

Ask an Artist Interview with Michael Craine of Cranfield Colour

Ask an Artist Interview with Michael Craine of Cranfield Colour

Most artists will have some relationship with colour, wether it be ink, paint, pencil or paper.  The colours you choose are important for many reasons, for their colour for one, but also for their longevity, their intensity, their opacity, their sheen, their ability to work on top or underneath other colours - I'm really only scratching the surface of the subject. Today's guest lives and breaths colour, he is managing director of Cranfield Colour who make printing inks for intaglio and relief printers including the very popular Caligo range of 'safe-wash' inks which are oil-based but can be washed up with water and a little soap!  Cranfield Colour also make oil-paints for the professional market.  Michael talks to Laura and Peter about some of the science, and why choosing your materials well is so important.
