The Future of Work: Why it's time to retire ‘retirement’

Retiring at 65: Is it an outdated idea?

Host Zannat Reza discusses retirement and its implications for our aging population. With over 37% of Canadians aged 50 and over claiming they can't afford to retire, is the notion of retiring at 65 outdated?

Zannat Reza talks with Lisa Taylor, author of The Talent Revolution and president of Challenge Factory, about the new era of work and aging. With our aging population and people living longer, traditional notions of retirement are quickly becoming outdated. Zannat and Lisa discuss the drivers of the future of work and how we can better use our years of expertise. They also address ageism in the workplace. They explain how ageism can cause employees to feel undervalued and unsupported, leading to a lack of engagement and productivity.

Lisa & Zannat offer advice for both employers and employees, highlighting the importance of recognizing and addressing ageism in the workplace. They also discuss the benefits of creating a workforce that values diversity in all its forms, including age diversity. Lisa also provides practical tips for organizations looking to engage and retain their older workers,

Join the conversation about the future of work and aging.

    Chapter Time Stamps

    (00:00:00) Episode Introduction

What are your plans when you're 65? Retirement has been ingrained in our culture, but according to a recent National Institute on Aging survey, 37% of Canadians aged 50 and older say they can't afford to retire. In this episode, we explore the idea of retiring at 65 and whether it's still relevant.

(00:01:21) Is retirement at 65 outdated?

Retirement at 65 was chosen as an arbitrary number in the 1930s when life expectancy was only 62. Lisa argues that retiring at 65 is an outdated idea and suggests that we should better use the extra 20-30 years we now have due to increased life expectancy.

    (00:03:15) Demographics and Career Ownership

Lisa talks about the changing demographics and aging of the workforce, which she believes will shape the future of work more than technology. She says that as we get older and live longer, we still want to remain engaged and productive, which could include paid work, volunteering, being on boards, or starting a business.

    (00:04:19) Ageism in the workplace

Lisa notes that ageism is rampant and socially accepted in the workplace, and women are more affected than men due to sexism. She explains that ageism can lead to barriers for older workers, including being left out of interesting projects or being passed over for promotions. Many organizations start giving cues that employees are ready to retire around age 50, leading to a decline in career conversations and opportunities.

    (00:08:17) The Broken Talent Escalator

How an organization treats older workers can also impact younger employees. Taylor explains the concept of a "broken talent escalator." She says that the escalator is like an individual's career path, where they get on the escalator and start to ride up to their desired career level. However, as they approach a certain level, they start to notice that the escalator is ending and there's no option to continue. As a result, the newest employees, who have the least time on the escalator, see older workers riding treadmills and decide not to work for an organization with a culture of older workers on a treadmill.

    (00:10:30) Importance of Age Diversity

Taylor discusses the importance of succession planning as the workforce gets older and people start leaving. Taylor suggests that organizations can take immediate action by recognizing age diversity in their diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

    (00:11:50) Finding a Good Fit

Taylor advises people who face ageism in the workplace to find organizations that value and recognize the hidden talent pool of older workers. She recommends looking for organizations that have diversity of all kinds, including age diversity.

    (00:12:40) Engaging Older Workers

Taylor shares creative ways organizations can engage their older workers, including off-ramping strategies where older workers can work part-time or take on a mentorship role. This can be a win-win for both the organization and the older worker.

(0:16:33) - Future of Aging: The Final 2 Questions

Lisa answers the final 2 future of aging questions we ask all our guests.

Are You TOO OLD To Be Hired?

Are You TOO OLD To Be Hired?

Are you too old to be hired? Do you ever wonder if you’re too old to land another job?  Or that your age is a barrier to what you really want to do?

Now, those of you who already know me will know I get on my high horse about ageism in the workplace and how I believe we are NEVER TOO OLD to reinvent our careers. Yes, that's right - we are NEVER TOO OLD to be the person we were born to be.

In this episode I promised to give you the links to a number of interesting posts and resources and you'll find them at the bottom of these shownotes.

Let me ask you, if you're over 30, over 40, over 50, over 60, over 70 are you too old to:

    Be heard?

    Be loved?

    Be appreciated?

To contribute your years of experience and knowledge to benefit someone who's problems you can help to solve?

To be considered as an individual rather than an age-bracket?

Are you too old to learn something new?

    Or to try something different?

And TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT?

Unfortunately, according to a 2021 report by the Australian Human Rights Commission, age discrimination remains a significant issue in the workplace, affecting both job seekers and employees.

Here are some statistics on ageism in the workplace in Australia:

    • Around 27% of workers over the age of 50 reported experiencing age discrimination in the workplace.
    • Older job seekers are more likely to experience long-term unemployment, with the average duration of unemployment for workers aged 55 and over being around 71 weeks.
    • Older workers are more likely to be retrenched or have their contracts terminated, and they find it more challenging to secure new job opportunities than younger workers.

    and this one surprised me:

Despite being a protected attribute under Australian law, only 56% of workers are aware that age discrimination is illegal.

So how can we overcome ageism in the workplace? In this episode I discuss in detail these strategies:

    • Upskilling
    • Networking
    • Highlighting transferable skills
    • Addressing negative stereotypes

To overcome ageism it requires a collective effort from employers, employees, and society as a whole.

I’d like to ask you: How are you helping to promote a culture of inclusivity and respect for all generations?

What else can we do to create a more equitable and age-diverse workplace?

Let’s keep the conversation going and I'd love you to send me a message on LinkedIn or share a post of you in action showing your energy and enthusiasm regardless of age and tag me so I know!

    Older Librarians Can Be Gold

    Older Librarians Can Be Gold

Hello Librarians!  Thank you for listening in to the tenth episode of Masterful Librarian Podcast. I am really grateful for your listenership.

If you’re enjoying the podcast, please visit my website, masterfullibrarian.com and sign up for my email list.

I promise all you’ll receive are notifications when I publish a podcast episode, and occasional offers or information I might send out.  When you join the email list, you can download my free gift, 4 Simple Steps for Achieving Greater Relevance, Meaning, & Impact. So please take advantage of that.

My episode today is short.  That’s because I had an entirely different episode ready to go until Sunday night.

Then I watched Super Bowl LV  and saw one of the oldest quarterbacks in the NFL, Tom Brady, age 43, coached by one of the oldest coaches in the NFL, Bruce Arians, age 68, lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a decisive victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

It got me to thinking about age. And about how, in our culture, we embrace the myth that older workers are somehow less competent, inspired, and valuable. And that’s exactly what it is – a myth. So I changed the topic of my podcast to talk about this.

In the past, I didn’t much care for Tom Brady. (My apologies to any Patriot’s fans out there!)  But I’ve grown to admire him over the last few years.  Why?  Because of his personal effort, focus, commitment to excellence, and his ability to inspire his team.

And that’s something you can find in many experienced, older librarians.

The truth is that in a world where longevity has become more the norm than the exception, many people are at their professional prime in their 60’s and 70’s.  These are the people with the most experience, the greatest wisdom, and the largest number of failures and iterations under their belts.  They know what they know not from theory, but from experience and they bring that to bear in their work.

    And that is gold.

Kerry Hannon on Pajama Jobs, the New Age of Remote Work, and Why Older Workers May Benefit

Kerry Hannon on Pajama Jobs, the New Age of Remote Work, and Why Older Workers May Benefit

Today, Debbie talks to Kerry Hannon, author of the new and well-timed Great Pajama Jobs: Your Complete Guide to Working from Home. Kerry is the author of 14 books and an expert on career transitions, entrepreneurship, personal finance, and retirement. She writes regularly for The New York Times, MediaWatch, Forbes and other media outlets, including NextAvenue.org.

Kerry answers the question: will we ever return to the office or is remote working here to stay? Debbie wishes WFH (working from home) had been an accepted phenomenon decades ago when she had small children.

Kerry shares some key skills that can make working from home more effective (good communication, discipline, technical literacy) as well as tips for older and more experienced workers, including the semi-retired. She makes the point that work is not just about the money.

They also talk about ageism, still a pervasive issue in the workplace, and how remote work might alleviate it by focusing attention on performance and productivity.

Finally, they talk about one of Kerry's favorite topics: cultivating resilience by learning new skills. Expand your brain, she says. Adopt a beginner’s mind, stay open, and take risks. Consider living and working in a foreign country that is welcoming to location-independent workers.

Perhaps not compatible with our pandemic world right now, but travel and living somewhere else are often part of a gap year dream.
