Using digital tools to optimize the student experience: face-to-face, online and hybrid classes

Using digital tools to optimize the student experience: face-to-face, online and hybrid classes

Tune in to the management insights podcast with today’s guest Gerry McNamara as we discuss how to use online tools to better manage online and hybrid classes.  The days of college classes meeting in classrooms two or three times a week for lectures is going the way of gasoline powered cars – an increasing number of folks are moving away from it and most know its day as the dominant model are waning.  Increasingly, classes are going to hybrid models where classes meet only occasionally or going fully online.  Today, we are going to be talking about digital tools instructors can use to help facilitate these classes.

3 Ways To Reduce Digital Distractions During Online Classes w/ Melissa Scatena, CEO of Scattered Solutions

3 Ways To Reduce Digital Distractions During Online Classes w/ Melissa Scatena, CEO of Scattered Solutions

Read Melissa's tips on our blog

Melissa suggests setting up a designated homework/homeschool space in your home to prevent distractions during online classes and homework time. Things to keep in mind:

    • Try to choose a quiet space in a less busy part of the house, an environment that will naturally minimize distractions. It’s important to choose this area and stick with it
    • Choose functional furniture and stock up on supplies. We suggest avoiding couches or lap desks and instead opt for a traditional desk or a small table and chair. Consider adding a soft cushion on the chair — when kids feel uncomfortable, they’re more prone to stirring and squirming, leading to distraction and disorganization. With regard to supplies, be sure to stock up on pens, pencils, and markers. We also suggest including a timer on your supplies list, which you can use to give your child a brain break for intervals of uninterrupted work
    • Reserve space for a calendar and to-do list. Important, visible anchors like these will make your child’s in-house homeschool/homework space an area that encourages building on small tasks to reach larger goals

    Soiling the Nest – 35

    Soiling the Nest – 35

You spend nine months nesting, making your everything just right so that your beautiful newborn will know, from the very beginning, that home will always be the safe place.

Then, 18 years later, that little chick you've been loving and coddling and providing for graduates and you burst with pride. Next stop: Leaving home. And then it happens. Your beautiful child morphs into a surly, argumentative and disrespectful pain in the ass. We call it soiling the nest.

If you're not familiar with the term "soiling the nest", you've probably never graduated a high school senior preparing to start college, never had kids, or are one of the lucky few whose son or daughter is a mature, well-adjusted teen. It's what kids do to make saying goodbye to their childhood home and life as they know it a little less painful, a little less scary.

This year, teens across America are continuing the age-old tradition of being difficult (and sometimes downright obnoxious) in preparation for the transition. Parents are doing their part by becoming ever-more controlling and clingy. This parent-child dance that often happens when a fledgling is about to fly the coop makes it easier for everyone to let go.

Everything is different in 2020, however, as families come to accept that there may not be a move-in day, a tearful good-bye at the curb, or mom's ugly crying over the baby book once she gets home. It's pandemic parenting in our new reality. Your freshman is home for the foreseeable future.

Now where the hell is the wine?

Plans change and that's okay - Artist Roxanne Coble

Plans change and that's okay - Artist Roxanne Coble

Roxanne is a planner. She plans what she's doing with her business 'by bun' two years ahead. TWO YEARS. And yet she'd never planned to be an artist.

She spent six years in a proper zero-creativity job before realising she could make a living through her art. And she's done that by growing an audience who enjoy her content across various social media platforms. Who support her, both socially and financially. But she realises plans can change, things change. And that's okay.

We chat about taking on and even creating social challenges, the pressures of constant content creation, making courses, hosting workshops and figuring out a way to balance her work-life as freelancer.

    Key takeaways:

    • Set up multiple income streams early on
    • Plan for the long-term, and
    • Don’t fear change
