    Episode 009: Regenerative Agriculture and Human Health with Mike Parish

    Episode 009: Regenerative Agriculture and Human Health with Mike Parish

     “State and Transition - your landscape is in a certain state, and that state is being created by the management that has gone on in that land. So all the weeds and all the diseases and pests that are on that land are basically coming there because you've created a state through management they thrive.

    So when you change your management, it transitions to a state that those things don't like, and so they move out of that system. And so that's how I related that then to human health. When I did my human health talks, I basically said this is exactly the same as a human body as you would when you're working with a landscape” Mike Parish.

    In this episode, we speak about Mike's history in conventional agricultural and animal management practices where he identified that they were treating the symptoms experienced, but not the actual cause. These pursuits felt relentless and as an observer in the 60’s his father used 6 chemicals, however in Mike's career, this grew to 40 chemicals being used. This is where Mike recognized ‘Things were wrong’ and the advice sought from experts was conflicting.

    How you need to look at everything, Mike started to consider everything he was seeing in his landscape to adopt in his management going forward.  After doing grazing for management course, the way he viewed farming turned upside down.

    Mike shares his decision-making philosophy on how to create happiness in your life which is how he decided to manage farming holistically. These principles have enabled him to be successful in his life.

    Multi-species farming supports soil health, which in turn creates a symbiotic system creating more carbon in the soil when managed properly.

    With holistic farm management, more grass diversity becomes the benchmark alongside more diversity of animal species.

    Highlights & Resources:

    • Biological regenerative agriculture and the vital role it plays in human health;
    • How to identify when the systems are not working;
    • 1994 drought in Mudgee was managed without any supplementary feeding;
    • Soil health, biologically active for maximum animal and human health - Soil Food Web;
    • Be, Do, Have – A value system for decision-making;
    • 1,000,0000 acres under holistic management;
    • 15 years managing Dubbo Health Food Store;
    • How Australia is becoming a desert through aridification;
    • Biology needs energy and they trade nutrients like uber eats;
    • Grassfed meat has more omega 3 in it gram for gram than fish;
    • The pastured egg has got 10 times more omega 3 than a cage egg;
    • Misinformation in the vegan movement;
    • Regenerative practices can support human, animal, and planetary health;
    • Cow methane (farts) will not kill us as they only last 12 years until cycled;
    • 90% of our rainfall is running off instead of hydrating our landscape;

    Erica Hughes, Farmer Meets Foodie – Innovative virtual farmers market & connections, far North QLD

    Erica Hughes, Farmer Meets Foodie – Innovative virtual farmers market & connections, far North QLD

    Imagine if great food from your region had to travel over 3300 kilometres from where it’s picked to land back in your local grocery store, 10 kilometres from where it was grown and picked?!  That’s a reality for a lot of top end producers and communities.

    Listen in and be inspired by Erica Hughes to hear about the wonderful Farmer Meets Foodie virtual farmers marketplace and food connections that she and her family are growing at Mt Molloy on the Atherton Tableland, North Queensland, to change that story for the better.

    Across the country there’s a rapidly growing appetite and demand for more local, regional and seasonal food. Food that’s produced ethically, sustainably, that’s fresh, good for people and for the environment and that adds value in interconnected ways across the value chain from ‘paddock to plate’. Whether it’s to reduce food miles, improve food choices and affordability, or to help local producers, communities and economies to regenerate & recover from times of drought and more, or for consumers to access food more safely, online during times like COVID.

    Knowing your foods provenance – where it comes from - and then having the ability to choose and act on that knowledge is really powerful. Farmer Meets Foodie gives people the power to make and drive those choices - via a platform that producers go to directly connect and transact with commercial food businesses and other consumers in their region in practical, change-making ways . And there’s more….great services and Meet & Greet events. It’s inspiring!

    Listen in to enjoy this lovely conversation with Erica (and Zoro the rooster and Umbra the dawg) to hear and learn more – to join their marketplace, get ideas and tips about how you and your community can get more local and regional food on the table, and support producers to be better recognised and rewarded for what they do. Love it.

    Agricultura sintrópica é um sistema de cultivo agroflorestal baseado no conceito de sintropia. Ele é caracterizado pela organização, integração, equilíbrio e preservação de energia no ambiente. Essa vertente agrícola busca inspiração na dinâmica natural dos ecossistemas que não sofreram interferência humana para um manejo sustentável. Para nos guiar nessa aventura nós convidamos o @lenziagrofloresta que nos mostrou que existem outras vertentes que podemos seguir na agricultura
