Will Someone PLEASE Get Rachel Zegler Oscar Tix!

Will Someone PLEASE Get Rachel Zegler Oscar Tix!

It’s another “rumble” at the Oscars! West Side Story star Rachel Zegler’s made a major splash in her big-screen debut. The remake of the dazzling musical has seven nominations, but the modern-day (and finally authentic!) Maria isn’t invited to the ceremony?? Some fans believe leaving Rachel out is no coincidence, given the Academy’s long history of snubbing actors of color. And now the internet’s lit up over the controversy. Steven Spielberg: Get your star a seat!

Do The Kids Know? is a series of conversations between friends, Prakash and Kristen, where we challenge our understanding of contemporary media, popular culture, and what it means to live as racialized millennials in KKKanada (That’s Canada spelled with three K’s)

Our goal for this series is to have frank discussions about the stories and nuances missed by sensationalist media as well as to uncover the ways in which white supremacy, capitalism, and colonialism is shaping our movements and behaviours.

Keep tuning in to be a part of the conversation… don’t be a kid who doesn’t know!

The Reel: Bonus Episode: Highlights of the Toronto International Film Festival

The Reel: Bonus Episode: Highlights of the Toronto International Film Festival

In this special bonus episode, a team of Times reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival give the low-down on this year’s crop of films at the festival — both the hits and the misses.

Among the films premiering at this year's festival are “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," starring Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers and Matthew Rhys as a cynical journalist who interviews him; "Knives Out," a whodunit with an all-star cast, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans and LaKeith Stanfield; and Taika Waititi's "Jojo Rabbit," a satire about a young German boy and his imaginary friend, Adolph Hitler.

Mark Olsen (@IndieFocus), Justin Chang (@JustinCChang), Jen Yamato (@jenyamato), Glenn Whipp (@GlennWhipp) and Amy Kaufman (@AmyKinLA) also discuss films that premiered at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals, including Noah Baumbach's “Marriage Story,” starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, and "Uncut Gems," starring Adam Sandler.

The Reel: Oscars 2019: An Academy in Transition?

The Reel: Oscars 2019: An Academy in Transition?

Despite what's been called a "despicable" Best Picture win, L.A. Times feature writer and reviewer Mark Olsen (@IndieFocus) talks with Justin Chang (@JustinCChang), Mary McNamara (@marymacTV) and Glenn Whipp (@GlennWhipp) about how real change may have arrived at the Academy. Plus, Jen Yamato (@jenyamato) and Amy Kaufman (@AmyKinLA) get their Gaga fix on, and share the scoop on what was going on off-camera at the Academy Awards.

The politics within politics of the Oscars

The politics within politics of the Oscars

In this episode we discuss the Academy Awards with Raffi Sarkissian, Lecturer at Christopher Newport University, Virginia. Raffi has written about the long narrative created during the “award season” by creators, promotion strategists, the mainstream media etc. We discuss the emergence of the #oscarssowhite protest as a reflection of the industry's structural problems. However, since then, we have witnessed the industry attempting to course correct. Although this year has an unprecedented diversity of nominees, Raffi says, the #oscarssowhite problematic will continue to bubble under the surface. We also discuss the politics in and around Hollywood award ceremonies. Any award show is inherently political: whenever any institution decides what is considered “best," they are making a statement about their values and priorities. While Oscar once found explicit politics distasteful, more recent award shows have included multiple protests against the Trump Administration -- with Meryl Streep’s 2016 Golden Globes speech perhaps the most memorable. Other speeches, such as Viola Davis’. address struggles for inclusion and representation within the industry, not simply celebrating what has been accomplished but pushing for more progress. Even if many people do not recall who won last year's Oscars, the awards have a direct effect on who gets to create more films in upcoming years. Lastly, there are the politics of the broadcast itself: as they try to appeal to a bigger audience, who is in charge of the awards, and who are the Oscars for?

Lady Gaga, Spike Lee and Oasis

Lady Gaga, Spike Lee and Oasis
Katie, Stevie and Bethany discuss the films getting them excited in 2019 - an eclectic mix including a chorus line of pitch-perfect #Cats, a big-eared baby elephant #Dumbo and the piano-playing Rocketman himself, Elton John. We chat to Spike Lee about his chances at Oscars 2019 with #BlacKkKlansman, and how far he thinks we've come in the three years since Oscars So White. Plus we go back in time to hear Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher calmly discussing their differences before declaring themselves the best of friends... Just kidding they have a humdinger of a row and Oasis go their separate ways. And on that note, Happy New Year.

Oscar Podcast #40: Toronto and Venice Festival Lineups, Updated Oscar Predictions

Oscar Podcast #40: Toronto and Venice Festival Lineups, Updated Oscar Predictions

In our 40th Oscar podcast, I am joined by Gold Rush Gang members Richard Anthony and, new this season, Bryan Bonafede.

With the announcements this week of the Toronto and Venice film festival lineups, that gives us lots to talk about in terms of who rises (La La Land, Arrival) and who falls (Loving, Moonlight) in our Oscar predictions. The upcoming Telluride announcement will be even more telling and we talk about some of the films expected there as well.

We detail updated predictions in Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress and wonder is Ruth Negga (Loving) is as locked as some of us (meaning I) think she is and how we build our predictions. How many performances from a single film will get Oscar nominated? Is Best Actor skewing too young and is there room for a newcomer in Best Actress? Why are Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress so bleak right now and are Liam Neeson (Silence) and Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) going to be runaway winners?

All this and much more on this podcast that runs just about two hours.

Ep. 43: Pierrot Le Fou & The 2016 Oscars

Ep. 43: Pierrot Le Fou & The 2016 Oscars

On today's show, Monica Castillo, contributor for RogerEbert.com, IBTimes, and whole host of other prestigious publications, makes her debut appearance on our little podcast. She's joining Lady P and Martin Kessler for a discussion about the 43rd film on the Sight and Sound Critic's Poll, Jean-Luc Godard's 1965 feature PIERROT LE FOU. This is Godard's third appearance on the S&S list - the first two being BREATHLESS (#13)  and LE MEPRIS (#21). The panelists discuss the ways in which Godard uses PIERROT LE FOU to comment on his past achievements, while still attempting to tackle more contemporary political subject matter.

And speaking of contemporary subject matter, the 88th Academy Awards Ceremony is coming up on Sunday, Feb 28th. For our second topic, we're taking a break from our usual cinema history analysis to talk about the annual awards show - though one could make the case that the Oscars are more of a relic of movie history than any of the films we discuss on this show. The Academy has come under fire in recent years for it's lack of diversity and its myopic focus on films that appeal largely to an older white audience. They've recently taken steps to try and bring a new crop of younger people of varying ethnicities into the fold, but will that be enough to renew interest in the show? They discuss.

Oscar Podcast #35: BAFTA Winners, The Revenant Leads the Oscar Race

Oscar Podcast #35: BAFTA Winners, The Revenant Leads the Oscar Race

In our 35th podcast, recording just minutes after the 2016 BAFTA awards ceremony, I am joined by three Gold Rush Gang members (James, Evan and Kenneth) to hash over the huge turn in the Oscar game with The Revenant making good on its recent DGA win and taking BAFTA's Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and more. Can anyone deny its frontrunner status now?

We also look at the continued strength of Mad Max: Fury Road (which won four awards) and the craziness of the Best Supporting Actress category, including a bit of time devoted to the one and only Diane Ladd on her "greed and corruption" accusations of leading actress performances in "her" suppawting category.

We finish by talking about the three slates of performers and presenters for the 88th Academy Awards, wonder if the chosen presenters are too thinly veiled an answer to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and try and figure out who will be presenting Best Picture.
