    Abusem dels analgèsics?

    Abusem dels analgèsics?

    Els analgèsics són els medicaments més venuts a les farmàcies. Els no opioides es poden comprar sense recepta i sovint ens els prenem sense prescripció mèdica. Però quines conseqüències pot tenir per la salut l'automedicació fins i tot amb un paracetamol o ibuprofèn? Alguns metges de capçalera alerten dels perills de recomanar medicaments a familiars i coneguts i també assenyalen que ens sobre mediquem per la baixa tolerància al dolor o no sentir-nos al 100%. De tot això en parlem a l'Altaveu a Fons d'aquesta setmana amb el ministeri de salut, farmacèutics i metges de capçalera.

    Episode 118: Fever Medication for Kids: Are They Doing More Harm Than Good?

    Episode 118: Fever Medication for Kids: Are They Doing More Harm Than Good?

    When our children fall sick, as parents we will often rely on medications such as paracetamol and ibuprofen for fever relief. But did you know that these medications don’t need to be your first port of call? In many cases, these medications may be doing more harm than good when it comes to illness and recovery for your children.

    While it's important to be cautious, it's equally vital to recognize that fever is not an enemy to be fought off. In fact, fever is a natural health response that can benefit our kids in several ways when they are unwell.

    Throughout this episode, we will explore the topic of fever in children, shedding light on its positive aspects, the potential risks associated with common fever medications, and effective natural ways to reduce fever without relying solely on medication.

    In this podcast episode, I will discuss:

    • Why a fever is beneficial to our kids when they are sick;

        • How it affects the body’s glutathione levels in the body; Impact on immunisations;
        • Safe usage guidelines for children.
      • Ibuprofen:
        • Links to gut issues and safe administration to children;
        • Possible links to increased respiratory infections;
        • Why you can’t give Ibuprofen to dehydrated children.

    Episode 73: When to Treat a Fever in Children

    Episode 73: When to Treat a Fever in Children

    Kids get sick, and they run fevers. But as parents, we can be prone to a bit of fever phobia. Many parents believe that if a fever is not treated with medications, there are high risks of serious side effects. This simply is not true!

    Treating fever in children doesn’t have to involve Panadol or Nurofen. In fact, there are a number of natural remedies that are far more gentle and supportive.

    In this podcast episode I chat about:

    • Health recommendations for managing fevers in different age groups, including:
      • 0 - 3 months of age;
      • 3 - 12 months of age;
      • 12+ months of age;
      • The warning signs to keep an eye on in the 12+-month-old age group to determine if you can monitor the fever at home.
    • The three reasons a fever is beneficial to our kids when they're sick;
    • Why we shouldn't jump straight to the paracetamol & ibuprofen;
    • The risk of febrile convulsions & why the number on the thermometer is not the best indicator if your child's fever is becoming dangerous;
    • What to look out for instead when it comes to febrile convulsions;
    • The child-led approach when it comes to fever;
    • Potential risks and side effects of using paracetamol and ibuprofen;
      • In which I discuss that they are safe to use, but have downsides when it comes to gut issues, skin reactions, additives, and more.
    •  Natural solutions for reducing fever in children which include herbal teas and nutrients are beneficial, plus the benefits of rest.

    #28 Medicatie Overgebruik Hoofdpijn, een groter probleem dan we denken

    #28 Medicatie Overgebruik Hoofdpijn, een groter probleem dan we denken

    Naar schatting hebben ongeveer 500.000 mensen in Nederland medicatie overgebruik hoofdpijn (MOH), dat is ca 3% van de bevolking. Hierbij verandert de oorspronkelijke hoofdpijn (meestal migraine) door overmatig gebruik van medicatie in chronische dagelijkse hoofdpijn. De migraine is dus van karakter verandert door het te vroeg gebruik van het medicijn of door het innemen van het medicijn tegen migraine uit voorzorg (om toch maar naar het werk te gaan bijvoorbeeld). Ook gewone pijnstillers al paracetamol en NSAID's kunnen MOH veroorzaken. De enige remedie hiertegen is radicaal stoppen met de hoofdpijn medicatie.

    # 24. De nier en het geneesmiddel -(4) Sick Day Rules

    # 24. De nier en het geneesmiddel -(4) Sick Day Rules

    Tijdens intercurrente ziekten (koorts, braken, diarree) of bij een hoge omgevingstemperatuur neemt het risico op uitdroging toe. De nier wordt dan minder goed doorbloed en de nierfunctie kan dan plotseling afnemen. Dit is vooral een risico bij mensen die al een verminderde nierfunctie hebben. Bovendien gebruiken mensen met een verminderde nierfunctie vaak medicatie (denk aan ACE remmers -prillen- en ARB's -sartanen-) die de druk in de  nier verlagen. In combinatie met (dreigende) uitdroging kan de druk zoveel dalen dat er acute nierschade ontstaat. In deze aflevering gaan we het hebben over wat te doen tijdens intercurrente ziekten bij mensen met chronische nierschade. Let op dat dit altijd maatwerk is en u altijd eerst medisch advies inwint bij uw eigen professional voor u actie onderneemt.
