Parenting Unmasked: Breaking Free from the Chains of Fear

Parenting Unmasked: Breaking Free from the Chains of Fear

In Episode 47, I give you an inside glimpse of the content for Day 1 of our recent workshop on The Four Principles for Fighting Fear, specifically in the context of parenting teenagers. As a parent, I understand how fear can sometimes hinder our ability to parent our teens effectively. That's why I want to share a personal "cheat code" for managing fear and becoming a more confident parent.

You see, parental fear is often rooted in love. We want the best for our teenagers, and we worry about their well-being. But sometimes, this fear can hold us back from making the right decisions or giving our teens the freedom they need to grow.

Learn to identify and understand your own fear triggers - the situations or thoughts that make you feel the most fearful as a parent. By recognizing these triggers, we can start to address them head-on.

Join me as we explore ways to fight fear and become more effective parents to our teenagers. Together, we can create a nurturing and supportive environment while giving us the peace of mind we deserve.

    116: The Minnesota Starvation Study

    116: The Minnesota Starvation Study

I’ve been referencing this study for awhile now and it keeps coming up in conversations with clients and colleagues. So I want to devote this episode to discussing the study, called The Minnesota Starvation Study. It was conducted by Ancel Keys in 1944 to 1945, during World War II, on 36 healthy male volunteers. Ancel Keys’ goal was to study the physical and psychological effects of what he termed “semi-starvation” because of the soldiers and civilians across Europe who were chronically underfed as a result of the war. The Minnesota Starvation Study is, to my knowledge, the only study of its kind which is partially why it is constantly talked about in weight loss and obesity medicine circles. And the results of the study are profound and important to discuss in relation to self-restriction of calories through dieting.

Ancel Keys ensured the 36 male volunteers met specific criteria in terms of their health and baseline eating habits before joining the study. During the study, which took place over a full year, the men lived in a controlled environment and adhered to very strict guidelines regarding calorie intake, activity, and testing. For the first 12 weeks they were in a control period. Then they entered the 6 month semi-starvation period which meant they each only ingested half the amount of their daily calories from before. Finally, they entered a 12 week rehab period. The effects of the semi-starvation on the men included cognitive and emotional changes as well as medical and physical changes and some of the symptoms they experienced echo those suffered by people with disordered eating. Keep in mind that the men’s overall caloric intake was decreased to 1570 calories per day, which is still more than most diets recommend now. The enormity of effects on their minds and bodies, some of which lasted for years, brings up very real harm questions about the cost of the diets we willingly put our bodies through. I encourage you to join me in this episode and to give the resources a read.

    About Dr. Michelle Tubman

Dr. Michelle Tubman is a physician and health coach. She helps women ditch dieting and thrive at any size. For the longest time she believed that weight loss was the answer to all her problems. But decades of yo-yo dieting and restriction left her miserable, unhealthy, and exhausted. Now she teaches women how harmful dieting can be and shows them the way to true health and wellness.

As a physician specializing in both emergency and obesity medicine, with additional training in nutrition, eating psychology, and coaching, Michelle can tell you with certainty that dieting is dangerous. Studies associate compromised health more with yo-yo dieting than higher body weight. Yet, everywhere you turn, shrinking your body is hailed as the solution. Women don't need to change. Attitudes do. So let's stop self-shaming, speak out against sizeism, and fiercely champion unconditional self-celebration!

BYU Education Week administrator Bruce Payne on celebrating a century of spiritual and academic learning

With more than 16,000 participants, 900 classes and hundreds of volunteers, BYU Education Week celebrated its 100th anniversary in Provo, Utah, from Aug. 15 to Aug. 19. Beginning as Leadership Week in 1922, BYU Education Week continues to offer presentations and classes that seek to teach, strengthen, lift, motivate and encourage.

This year’s classes focused on the 2022 theme: “100 Years of Instruction and Learning: ‘Of Things Both in Heaven and in the Earth.’” Bruce Payne has worked in support of Education Week for 29 years — 24 as the program administrator — and joins this episode of the Church News podcast to talk about the history of Education Week. He offers his insight into planning, facilitating and learning from this century-old program. The podcast also highlights excerpts from the Education Week devotional address by Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.

Charlie Dolman The Dust is in the Details

Charlie Dolman The Dust is in the Details

If Black Rock City were a ship, Charlie Dolman would be its skipper. The SS BRC is already taking shape in the dry docks of our collective effort, and at some point later this summer it will slide into the dusty seas of northern Nevada. As the event operations director, Charlie leads a crew of leaders responsible for pretty much all aspects of city infrastructure, and for planning for just about every operational contingency, from fire and rain to, who knows, a downpour of frogs. On fire.

If you see him on playa he’s the fast-moving, soft-spoken guy with three radios, a cell phone and a pager (yes, a pager!). In this rare interview he sits still long enough to talk with Stuart about the people making BRC greener, less commodified, and more inclusive. He also passes Stuart's quiz about being a Brit in the US, and defends marmite as a comestible.

Liminal Spaces was a six-year Wellcome-funded project at Edinburgh Law School, which scrutinised regulatory systems that support human health research. The vision of the project was to deliver the first-ever integrated, interdisciplinary and crosscutting analysis of health research regulation by confronting the gaps between documented law, relevant ethical and social theories and concepts, and research practice.

To mark the end of the project in March 2021, the principal investigator, Prof Graeme Laurie, sat down with members of the Liminal Spaces team to discuss their research findings.

    On Granting Authority

    On Granting Authority

Here is a major shift in the development of the plan that Jesus is implementing:

Until now, the disciples have been observers, followers, learners. Now they are going to become participants in the Kingdom.  They are moving  from classroom studies to being actively involved in implementing what they have been learning.

When the focus is on training and sending, one key ingredient can be overlooked: it is the receiving of authority and power.

How did the disciples receive this authority?
We can also be filled with the authority and the words of faith that Jesus gives.
