    Episode Notes

Hey everyone, it's Marco Ciappelli here, and I am delighted to bring you an episode of the Redefining Society podcast that is dedicated to the upcoming CES conference in Las Vegas. CES is known as the place where you see the future, and technology plays a vital role in shaping that future. Today, I want to explore how technology fits into the societal structure, particularly in the healthcare industry.

I am thrilled to have Jesse Ehrenfeld, the president of the American Medical Association, joining me on the show. He will be hosting a panel at CES on enabling the new era of value-based care for digital health. But before we dive into the topic, let's understand what value-based care really means.

Value-based care focuses on the quality of care, the performance of healthcare providers, and the patient experience. It prioritizes what patients value the most, and technology plays a crucial role in achieving this. Through the use of digital health tools and AI, we can enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and patient engagement, ultimately delivering value-based care.

One of the key benefits of technology in healthcare is telehealth. Virtual consultations save time and eliminate the frustration of traffic and long waits at the doctor's office. Patients can interact with their healthcare providers from the comfort of their own homes, making healthcare more convenient and accessible.

However, the adoption of new technologies comes with challenges. Physicians want to know if the tools actually work, if they are covered by insurance, what happens in case of failures, and how they integrate into their practices. We need to ensure that the tools meet their expectations and address these concerns.

From a patient's perspective, value and success are measured by factors such as convenience, quality of care, and cost. Telehealth and other digital health tools provide patients with a more satisfying experience, saving them time and delivering higher quality care. Lowering out-of-pocket costs is also a priority, as healthcare expenses continue to rise.

While we often associate AI with cutting-edge advancements, it is already embedded in healthcare operations behind the scenes. AI-powered tools are streamlining supply chain management, scheduling, and insurance processes. In research, AI is accelerating drug discovery and improving diagnostic accuracy.

Events like CES play a crucial role in driving innovation in digital health. They provide a platform for entrepreneurs, innovators, and healthcare professionals to connect and collaborate, ensuring that the technologies developed meet the needs of patients and practitioners.

I hope you find this glimpse into the role of technology and digital health in driving value-based healthcare insightful. If you want to learn more about this topic, make sure to check out Jesse Ehrenfeld's panel, "Digital Health Enabling the New Era of Value-Based Care," at CES.

I am excited to record and share these episodes about the evolving healthcare landscape, and I look forward to bringing you more discussions on the intersection of technology and society in the future.

That's all for now. Stay tuned for our next episode, and until then, take care!

Dr. Mary O'Connor, CMO and Co-Founder of Vori Health: Establishing Trust and Identifying Team Communication Types

Dr. Mary O'Connor, CMO and Co-Founder of Vori Health: Establishing Trust and Identifying Team Communication Types

Fear can create a barrier between living your passion or communicating with your team. This week Dr. Mary O’Connor discusses the role of telehealth in today’s patient care and how she is working with surgeons and insurance companies to dispel myths about the effectiveness of certain surgeries and quality of life. Listen in as Laura and Dr. O’Connor discuss how she navigates delicate topics with different stakeholders and how she maximizes her team’s communication styles for better management.

Here are a few things you’ll learn during this conversation:

    • What to do when parties get defensive during a discussion
    • Dealing with different communication styles
    • The importance of “small talk” in establishing trust
    • Critical lessons for leading a team
    • Understanding your team’s behavior and knowing how to respond

During the 24-Hour Challenge, Dr. O’Connor encourages you to acknowledge a fear that’s holding you back from your passion by writing it down or addressing it out loud.

    Dr. Mary O’Connor:

Mary I. O’Connor, MD is co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Vori Health, a physician-led virtual musculoskeletal company on a mission to empower all humanity to lead a healthier life. Vori Health focuses on getting patients the right care for their spine, bone, and joint conditions, and promotes expert non-surgical care to decrease the high rates of inappropriate surgery.

Dr. O’Connor is a nationally recognized leader in health equity, chairing the Movement is Life Caucus, a nonprofit multi-stakeholder coalition committed to addressing musculoskeletal health disparities, since its inception in 2010. She has long championed diversity and inclusion in orthopedics and broken many barriers to women in the overwhelmingly male profession.

Dr. O’Connor is Professor Emerita of Orthopedics at Mayo Clinic and practiced at Mayo Clinic in Florida until 2015 during which time she served in many leadership roles including Chair, Orthopedic Surgery Department (Florida) and Medical Director, Office of Integrity and Compliance (Mayo enterprise). In 2015, she became Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine and the inaugural Director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Care at Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Health.

Recognizing the challenges to true transformation of patient-centered care in the traditional medical system, Dr. O’Connor left her surgical practice and academic medicine to embrace her entrepreneurial spirit and join Vori Health full-time in February of 2021.

Dr. O’Connor is an Olympian (US Women’s Rowing) and is passionate in her promotion of the power of movement to improve health. She and her husband have three amazing children.

Giving Voice to Patients - Mel Hall, Former CEO of Press Ganey Associates

Giving Voice to Patients - Mel Hall, Former CEO of Press Ganey Associates
Practicing what he preached in inner city Detroit led Methodist minister Mel Hall to pursue a PhD in statistics. Not your typical path, perhaps, but Hall had a vision to use data to describe the conditions he observed and seek improvements. When he then connected with Press Ganey, the South Bend, Indiana-based health care company known for developing and distributing patient satisfaction surveys, the community he served expanded considerably. In this episode of Raise the Line, Hall speaks with Shiv Gaglani about the secrets behind Press Ganey's rapid growth and success, including his company's culture of accountability, its focus on science, and its “maniacal” customer service. Tune in to catch Hall's take on making improvements by seeking out and using data in continual feedback loops, the importance of personal touches, and his argument for having the voice of the patient drive the process of healthcare.

I'm Here - Communication and the Patient Experience with Marcus Engel

I'm Here - Communication and the Patient Experience with Marcus Engel

I’m Here Communication and the Patient Experience with Marcus Engel

The two most compassionate words any human being can say to another person is

“I’m here.” Today’s episode is a story of tragedy, triumph, and success. My special guest is Marcus Engel, who was hit by a drunk driver, every bone in his face crushed, has permanent and total sight loss in both eyes, and endured over 300 hours of reconstructive facial surgery. Yet today, he is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Notre Dame, author of three books, certified patient experience professional, and certified speaking professional.

Marcus takes us through his uplifting journey from the beginning. It starts in 1993, as a college student driving back from a hockey game with friends when the accident happened and what has transpired throughout his life and career.  There are two women he encounters in the hospital that forever changed his life. The first one is a Patient Care Tech, named Jennifer, who held his hand when he first arrived at the hospital. The other one is Barb, his first ICU nurse after his very first 25-hour major facial reconstruction surgery.  Both of these women said special words to him that was so genuine and humble, and these words deeply impacted his life and helped him realize that simple human presence is the cornerstone of caregiving and it’s the foundation of our humanity. Amazingly, two decades later, after speaking at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital, he finally got to meet Jennifer, hold hands with her and thank her, at the very hospital that saved his life. There are more stories to be told.  If you’re looking for some extraordinary, uplifting inspiration today, download this episode now!

The Hospitalist (Vol 18, Issue 2)

The Hospitalist (Vol 18, Issue 2)
TThis month in our issue, we look at the challenges that healthcare reform in the U.S. poses for hospitalists and preview the Society of Hospital Medicine’s HM14 annual conference happening in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort from March 24-27. First, noted healthcare futurist and HM14 keynote speaker, Dr. Ian Morrison, shares his thoughts on how healthcare reform and its revenue model, including changes under the Affordable Care Act, will impact hospitalists and the healthcare system. Next, Dr. Zubin Dumania, better known as ZoggMD and the founder of Turntable Health, offers tips on how HM14 attendees can avoid the stereotypical Las Vegas vacation and where to go for fun, good food, and entertainment post-session. Elsewhere in this issue, we examine how hospital pain management improves patient satisfaction scores with a team-management approach, provide career advice for first-time hospital medicine job seekers, review physician productivity compensation in the age of accountable care and value-based purchasing, and feature the latest in clinical literature.

    Hospital Medicine: Patient Satisfaction

    Hospital Medicine: Patient Satisfaction
This month’s edition features a discussion about improving patient satisfaction scores, a topic covered at a popular HM13 workshop last spring. Session speaker Dr. Peter Short, chief medical officer for Addison Gilbert and Beverly Hospital at Lahey Health in Boston, talks about measuring patient satisfaction and why he thinks a patient’s experience determines a hospital’s success. Also from the session, Dr. Richard Slataper, medical director of hospital medicine service at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, shares his observations about patient satisfaction surveys and thoughts about how hospitalists might influence other clinicians to improve patient satisfaction. Fellow session speaker, Dr. Steven Deitelzweig, assistant chair of hospital medicine at Ochsner Health in New Orleans, and chair of SHM’s Practice Management committee, tells why he thinks patient satisfaction is based on a solid connection between physicians and patients.
