SCP Podcast Episode 216: Patrick McKeown

In this episode, join us as we talk with Patrick McKeown, international practitioner and author of “The Oxygen Advantage.

World-renowned author and breathing practitioner Patrick McKeown was educated at Trinity College in Dublin, before completing his clinical training in the Buteyko Breathing Method at the Buteyko Clinic, Moscow, Russia. This training was accredited by Professor Konstantin Buteyko.

From a young age, Patrick suffered from asthma and relied on an array of medicines and inhalers until he discovered the Buteyko Method at the age of 26, experiencing immediate relief from his symptoms. By applying the principles of the Buteyko Method, Patrick remains asthma-free since then, a feat that over 20 years of medication had failed to accomplish.

In a career spanning 15 years, Patrick has since also become a bestselling author and expert on the topic of optimal breathing for improved health, well-being and fitness.

Among the eight books Patrick has written, two have consistently remained in the top ten best sellers on Amazon.com: ‘Close Your Mouth’ and ‘Asthma Free Naturally’.

His latest book ‘The Oxygen Advantage®’ is based on 4 years of scientific research and tailors breathing exercises for anyone seeking to improve their fitness and sports performance. Already in its 3rd print run in the UK since September 2015, ‘The Oxygen Advantage®’ is set to revolutionize how we train, by addressing dysfunctional breathing patterns and simulating high altitude training through specific breath-holding exercises as devised by Patrick.

Patrick’s message is simple: how you breathe at rest and during exercise will affect your overall performance. Learn to breathe correctly and see immediate results in your training.

Patrick’s passion for his subject enables him to continue developing and refining his techniques to improve the fitness, performance, and focus of professional and non-professional athletes alike worldwide.

#29 - How Breathing Patterns Affect Our Stress Response

#29 - How Breathing Patterns Affect Our Stress Response

In this episode of the podcast I discuss the effect of breathing patterns on our stress response. I explore how certain patterns will increase our susceptibility to having high stress levels and reduce our ability to recover while others can actually downregulate the stress response and improve recovery.

Topics covered include what stress is to our body, how breathing affects stress and simple techniques to downregulate the stress response.

What if major health problems could be solved just by teaching people how to breathe differently? We are a nation of mouth breathers, which is taking a toll on our respiratory health and our entire bodies. So, what’s the answer? Nasal breathing.

Mobility Experiment - #5 - Breathing & Recovery. How Breathing Affects your Health & Performance

Mobility Experiment - #5 - Breathing & Recovery. How Breathing Affects your Health & Performance

In this episode of the podcast I discuss breathing habits & respiration rate. Most of us don't take much note of how we breath. However poor breathing habits can have an effect on our health, wellbeing & even our sexual performance.

Why is breathing through your mouth so bad for your health? Why is nictric oxide good for my health? Where in the body is nitric oxide produced and how can I take advantage of that? How are my breathing habits affecting my stress levels? I go through answers for each of the above in this episode.

I discuss how over-breathing can affect your health and recovery. As well as different techniques to improve your ability to breath and utilise all of the oxygen consumed.

This episode is for anyone who is involved in sports/exercise, is over stressed or wants to gain that edge on their performance.

The Strong Breath Holding Exercise Patrick shared to increase CO2 tolerance/threshold:

    • ** Healthy people only. Not for pregnant people. Not for those w/ High Blood Pressure **
    • EASY: Exhale and hold the breath (pinching nose) for 10-15 paces. Rest 30 seconds and breath normally. Repeat for 5 rounds.
      • Great for mediation
      • More stressed we are, the slower we walk
      • Start with 10-15 paces, increasing paces over time as it gets easier (15, 17, 20, 22, 25,…)
    • HARDER: (this one is a stressor - realize this and account for it)
      • Hold as long as possible. Walk, walk faster, jog, push for greater time, speed, and distances.
      • First 6 breaths after the hold = Minimal (light) breathing (to increase length of hypoxic state)
      • The take 12-18 “normal” breaths.
      • Repeat 5 times
      • Forced anaerobic state. Forces adaptations. IMPROVES ANAEROBIC CAPACITY

Ordinary Vegan Podcast #76-Breathing Exercises with Patrick McKeown

“My mission is to empower people to take control of their own health, well-being and fitness using simple breathing exercises proven to improve body oxygenation”.
    Patrick McKeown

Most people take their breathing for granted. Why shouldn't they? They have been doing it since birth without any effort.  But my guest, Patrick McKeown, takes breathing very seriously, and he is convinced that breathing correctly can change your life.

Patrick McKeown has written seven books on improving your body's oxygen use. His latest book, "The Oxygen Advantage," is a simple yet revolutionary approach to improving your body's oxygen use.

Furthermore, his book explains why chronic over-breathing can contribute to problems such as anxiety, asthma, fatigue, insomnia, obesity, and heart problems.

Today Patrick shares why one of the biggest obstacles to better health and fitness is how we breathe. Also,  he shares breathing exercises to help increase endurance, weight loss, and improve cardio-fitness.

I am very happy that Patrick was willing to share his expertise in lung health, breathing, and oxygen use.

Because,  as we all know, Covid-19 is a respiratory disease. The virus affects cells in the airways, from the nose and throat down to the lungs. Therefore,  learning techniques to help us breathe better during this outbreak is more crucial than ever.

Please welcome Patrick McKeown to today's podcast.

Breathwork & Blood Sugars With Nick Heath

Breathwork & Blood Sugars With Nick Heath

There’s been a lot of craziness in our world as of late and most of us are going through some real pain. Some of us have experienced sickness, some of us have lost someone close, and some of us have felt the negative impacts of COVID-19 on our business or income. Ultimately, it all amounts to us feeling like we have zero control over our lives at this point in time.

One concept that keeps circling in my head is the importance of controlling what can be controlled. It’s that concept that plays heavily in this conversation with Nick Heath.

It’s not likely that the information we cover in this episode is going to cure our collective issues as a global society. But the concepts Nick shares represent a critical method to regain some control over our physiological and psychological state. At a minimum, this will serve as a launching point to a better world considering the weight of stress we are all currently under.

In this conversation, Nick and I discuss his early life with type 1 diabetes, his passion for the art and science of breathing, as well as his recent 100-mile ruck in support of the non-profit Health and Human Performance Foundation.
