One year of this pointless war with Paul Niland of Lifeline Ukraine

One year of this pointless war with Paul Niland of Lifeline Ukraine

On today’s podcast I welcome back to the podcast, Paul Niland, CEO of Lifeline Ukraine, the suicide prevention helpline service in the country, to reflect on a year of this terrible war.

Paul chats about his experience of Ukraine in his 20 years of living there, the relationship with Russia, the political environment and the unlikely rise to power of Volodymyr Zelensky, the comedian and star of the TV series ‘Servant of the People’.

He also talks about the impact of the war on Lifeline Ukraine and how he and his team have coped with the huge increase in calls from people in severe distress and finally how he sees this war coming to an end.

    Glory to Ukraine

150 days of Putin’s brutal, pointless war, with Paul Niland from Kyiv

150 days of Putin’s brutal, pointless war, with Paul Niland from Kyiv

After 150 days of Putin's pointless, brutal war in Ukraine, Paul Niland, who has been living in Kyiv for nearly 20 years, gives us his perspectives of life in a war zone and his deep insights about what has happened and how it is likely to end.

He met Taoiseach, Micheál Martin on his recent trip to Ukraine and explained how the Russian brutality witnessed in some towns is the norm and not the exception.

He doesn't talk about fear. he talks about anger and resolve.

He doesn't talk about the war ending, he talks about victory for Ukraine.

After 150 days it is easy to lose focus - we must keep listening, learning and understanding.

    Enjoy the show!

Paul is the CEO of Lifeline Ukraine, a national suicide helpline service, founded initially to provide support to victims of war.

In this episode I chat with Paul Niland, an Irishman who sits in the eye of the potential storm in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Paul has been in Kyiv for 19 years and has witnessed up close and personal two revolutions, including protesting with his fellow citizens for 93 days in Maidan against the police during the Revolution of Dignity.

We chat about life in Kyiv today, why he and his fellow citizens will bear arms if necessary and we also chat about Lifeline Ukraine the national suicide prevention helpline that he set up three years ago.
