When somebody starts a conversation with, "Let me be honest with you..." how do you react? Do you feel like it's going to be a pleasant conversation? Probably not...

So before they've even begun, you're already in a frame of mind. You're approaching this negatively. The odds that you are willing to hear them out are slimmer than if they would've started the conversation with a different phrase.

Harmony in Pauses: Navigating Societal Healing

Harmony in Pauses: Navigating Societal Healing

In this episode of Soundbit's podcast, Kim welcomes guest Mark O for a conversation that delves into profound topics surrounding healing communities and the transformative power of life's pauses.

The episode begins with Kim's heartfelt recounting of a news story that served as a catalyst for her desire to make a positive impact. The tragic tale of a young man misled through social media, leading to devastating consequences, sparks Kim's determination to use her skills in organizational transformation for healing and fostering connections within communities.

The discussion unfolds to explore the broader societal issues that Kim and Mark O’Brien discuss, particularly the challenges stemming from the intense individualism prevalent in American culture. The duo reflects on how the COVID-19 pandemic, despite its difficulties, forced a global pause, allowing people to reevaluate priorities and fostering electronic communication that transcends geographical boundaries.

Mark shares insights into the unique philosophical challenges posed by individualism and the potential for it to lead to isolation and insulation. The conversation touches on the importance of recognizing and appreciating the wisdom of the older generation, a group often overlooked in today's fast-paced world.

The podcast takes an intimate turn as Mark shares personal experiences, such as his collection of guitars and the unconventional path that led him to college later in life. The duo discusses the importance of embracing one's unique journey, even if it deviates from societal expectations. Mark emphasizes the significance of being awake to the signs on one's path and making responsible decisions.

Kim and Mark reflect on the evolving nature of careers and education, sharing personal stories of transitions and the discovery of one's true path. They highlight the importance of allowing individuals, especially the younger generation, the freedom to explore and find their way, breaking away from societal pressures and expectations.

The episode concludes with a powerful message about the significance of pausing and listening. Kim introduces the concept of "pause power," emphasizing the value of connecting with others by showing up and listening to the small whispers. Mark reinforces the idea that the most meaningful messages often come from the quiet ones, and the episode wraps up with a sense of anticipation for the next insightful conversation on Soundbit's podcast.

In essence, this episode serves as a compelling exploration of societal challenges, personal journeys, and the transformative potential found in life's pauses, leaving listeners with a thought-provoking perspective on healing communities and embracing individual paths.

Episode 6: That time I paid $5,000 and joined a cult

On this episode of YQ, we have a gripping and personal story to share. Our guest recounts a time when they made a life-altering decision to join a cult, spending a staggering $5,000 in the process. This decision led them down a dark path, leaving them feeling slightly depressed and unsure of their own coherence. As our guest reflects on their journey and the emotional distress they experienced, they open up about their struggles in finding the right words to share this captivating tale.

Tune in as our speaker discusses the episode that they haven't written yet, possibly for another show or series, emphasizing the lack of guidelines or a script. Taking us back to 2015, during their second job, they paint a vivid picture of their misery, having quit their previous job two years prior. It was during this difficult time that they made the impulsive decision to throw away a significant amount of money, marking the beginning of a pattern of reckless spending.

The story unfolds as our guest recounts their participation in a three-day intensive session and a five-week follow-up program that they couldn't afford. Through candid and memorable encounters, such as an intriguing conversation in the bathroom with a friendly but surprising stranger, they take us on a journey where the boundaries of mind control and the cost of personal transformation blur.

Exploring the eight steps to mind control ordinary people, our speaker shares their own experiences of self-doubt and hesitation. Renouncing loved ones becomes a looming requirement, but their inner conflict prompts them to question its necessity. Wise counsel from friends suggests an alternative: paying the hefty price of $5,000 instead. As the speaker grapples with tough decisions and conflicting beliefs, they delve into the concept of tough love and its relevance in their own life.

Amidst tears and emotional distress during therapy sessions, our guest discovers moments of strange yet liberating activities that leave them questioning their own self-perception. Throughout the conversation, there are heartfelt pauses, highlighting the need for breaks in dialogue as they navigate their complex emotions.

Join us on this thought-provoking episode of YQ, as our guest bravely shares their journey of joining a cult and the deep introspection that followed. Exploring themes of personal transformation, self-discovery, and the search for meaning, this episode promises to captivate listeners and leave them pondering the complexities of the human psyche.

    Winning with Video Interviews
I'm seeing a popular trend when it comes to changes with interviewing techniques. Self-recorded video interviews are making their debut. If you think this takes away the stress, fear, or anxiety - think again.

You click record, read off each question, and respond. But how much time will you have? How long should it take to answer each question? What tech setup will you use? What are the do's and don'ts when it comes to winning with video interviews?

Check out this week's episode to find out how to ace your video interview!

Tip #1: Setup your computer equipment in the same place for practice runs and the interview.

Tip #2: Avoid all distractions - that means audio and visual. Don't assume you can blur or blackout your background!

    [06:11]
Tip #3: Practice responding while maintaining your focus on your camera, not your screen.

    [07:16]
Thoroughly read through your interview questions, pause, compose yourself, and concisely respond!

Why do you shut your eyes to times of need?” One of the beautiful things about the Bible is that it doesn’t candy-coat things. It is always brutally honest and candid. Because he is loyal to them,
He executes judgment towards the people in fairness.

SNS 035: Personal Choices and Fairness, Psalm 7, Psalm Tuesday

Personal choices, personal consequences, and fairness. Do you see how these go together? In our last episode, we mentioned the fairness of God in dealing with folks. In this one, the psalmist fleshes this out a little bit. In this psalm, Psalm 7, we see the weapons of God being equated with a person’s own choices; with the traps they lay for others. Isn’t that intriguing? And the Psalmist is content to let God manage the process. He asks God to take care of it and lets it go; trusting that God will do so. Is this another source of the peace and strength needed to lay down, sleep, and awaken that we’ve mentioned in previous episodes? Anyway…

SNS 034: Honesty; Simple, Bold Honesty, Psalm 6, Psalm Tuesday

Honesty. Simple, bold honesty. Do you remember how wonderful it feels to be able to be completely honest with someone? To let them know how you are truly doing? To let them know your failings and still have them love you? In this episode, we hear one being this type of honest with God. An honesty that does not fear to admit failings, weaknesses, and fears. Being honest enough to be real with God; It is a beautiful thing. Well…

SNS 033: Asking God To Stop Evil? Psalm 5, Psalm Tuesday

SNS 033: Asking God To Stop Evil? Psalm 5, Psalm Tuesday

Here’s a question. Should we, as Christians, ask God to stop evil? If so, how are we to pray when asking? In this episode, I find the answer to be yes, we should ask and we are given a beautiful example of how to ask in this Psalm, Psalm 5. That example being, to ask in simple honesty. And not with a vengeful motive. That is, to be asking that it be done in fairness, in a way that is truly warranted and not in a way that simply makes us feel better. Profound right? Well…

SNS 032: How Does It All Fit Together? Psalm 4, Psalm Tuesday

SNS 032: How Does It All Fit Together? Psalm 4, Psalm Tuesday

Have you ever read a Psalm and wondered how it all fits together? For instance, in this Psalm, Psalm 4, the psalmist goes from asking God for help to encouraging others to scream and work things out in private. I’ve wondered how does all this tie together, especially for use in a worship service? But then, but then… I read verses 6-7 in light of what we heard in Psalm 3 last time. Specifically the part about being able to lie down, sleep, and awaken; I now see this is a whole new light. This is about asking for a blessing in order to be a blessing. Isn’t that profound?

SNS 031: The Strength To Sleep and Awaken, Psalm 3, Psalm Tuesday

One of the most profound expressions of trusting God that I have ever found occurs in Psalm 3. “I lie down, sleep, and awaken because the Lord gives me the strength to do so.” Isn’t this amazing? In this episode, the psalmist shares how his enemies were increasing in number, he even calls them a vast horde. Yet, he will fear them not; instead, he is getting a good night’s sleep and awakens refreshed, secure in who God is. To knowingly trust and not fear; that is profound. Well…
