S2E7: Should Christians Listen To Secular Music?

S2E7: Should Christians Listen To Secular Music?

Whether or not Christians should listen to secular music is a matter of personal conviction. There is no single answer that applies to all Christians. Some Christians believe that all secular music is sinful and should be avoided, while others believe that it is possible to enjoy secular music without compromising their faith.

There are a few factors that Christians may consider when making this decision. One is the lyrics of the songs. Some songs may contain explicit or offensive language, or promote messages that are contrary to Christian beliefs. Others may be simply catchy and enjoyable, without having any negative messages.

Another factor to consider is the artist's intentions. Some artists use their music to spread messages of love, peace, and hope. Others use it to promote violence, hatred, or materialism. Christians may want to avoid listening to music by artists who they believe are using their platform for harmful purposes.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to listen to secular music is a personal one. There is no right or wrong answer, and each Christian must decide what is best for them.

We hope you'll enjoy our episode as we share our personal thoughts when it comes to music that we listen to daily.

Easter 2022 | The Resurrection Changes Everything | Burnt Hickory

Easter 2022 | The Resurrection Changes Everything | Burnt Hickory
Jesus is alive, he is alive indeed! Why is this such an amazing thing to celebrate in these modern times? The simplicity of this is the truth of the gospel, and its life changing. The resurrection of Jesus is of first importance, it was physically real, and it is for us. If Jesus had not raised from the dead, then our faith would be rendered of no use. His death was an actual event that happened in history. And we know it is for us because the resurrection provides forgiveness for our past, transforms us in the present, and secures us for the future. Because Jesus is alive, we have hope, faith, salvation, and assurance. Do you trust Jesus? Have you given your heart to him? Is the power of the resurrection transforming you? If you’ve got any questions about Jesus and the resurrection, we would love to connect with you, answer questions, and pray with you. You can always take the next step here – burnthickory.com/next

Saddleback Church: The Heart of Worship Music with Josh Miller

Saddleback Church: The Heart of Worship Music with Josh Miller

On the 27th episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, Paul is joined by Mega-church Worship Leader Josh Miller.  Josh believes through inspirational and dry seasons in life, music remains the constant through which one can write and express their thoughts and emotions and share them with the body of Christ. With several years of experience in worship leading Josh enjoys leading others into God's presence, not only with music, but with his life as well.

Saddleback Worship is a community of worshipers serving Saddleback Church, with locations spread across four continents. Recording their music in Southern California, the team is prayerful in their efforts to put pen to paper and to capture what God is saying in their community. Saddleback Worship is a diverse group of members and exists to point every heart to the name above every name — the name of Jesus. Josh Miller is the Worship Development Pastor and partners with the Global Worship Pastor. He grew up the son of a teaching pastor and this created his love of church and music.

Saddleback is the largest church in California and one biggest in the US. The church began in Lake Forest California and Rick Warren is the founding pastor. They now have 18 campuses in the US and four of those are international. Paul’s wife Tina worked there several years ago and loved it. There is currently an awakening in music under the umbrella of Jesus. Music speaks so many different messages and it can unite people. It’s powerful. Josh believes worship directs people to the Creator and points attention only to Him. However, there is a struggle today since we have a country and world that is so divided. There is hope that worship can build a bridge that Jesus can walk over towards people. We are all sinners saved by a grace we never deserved. It is important for Christians to have integrity and have character that points people to Jesus. He has boundless mercy. Josh loves that Saddleback Worship Team is all about team and growing in Christ.

They are releasing a new album titled “Alive and Well”. It will be released in less than two weeks on September 3rd. During Covid, the worship team found their job shifted with everyone in their homes. They started creating and writing together over Zoom. The themes they found were light in the midst of darkness. Covid is a dark season but the light of Christ shines through it. Dawn and mercy are promised to us. The second theme is home is where Christ is. The third theme is life in Christ and how He is making us alive in him. In the noise of this world, Jesus is there. We need to be light in the world.

During the course of writing this album there was a hard season for a team member. Josh found in the moments where we don’t feel God’s presence, we have His promises. These are found in scripture and it is truth even when our emotions are up and down. We cling to the promises of forgiveness. Our greatest growth comes through seasons of hardships. Eugene Peterson says I prayed for wisdom and you gave me problems to solve. I asked for strength and you gave me pain and anguish and struggles to grow from. God can do beautiful things in hard seasons.

What do you do when those you thought you could rely on disappear? Or worse yet, when you find out that instead of being a friend, they were a smooth-talking, double-dealing snake? The Psalmist in this episode sure did. His response offers a ray of hope in this otherwise very bleak situation.    Now…. Well, let’s first hear the psalm. Then we’ll chat about it.

Here’s a question. Should we, as Christians, ask God to stop evil? If so, how are we to pray when asking? In this episode, I find the answer to be yes, we should ask and we are given a beautiful example of how to ask in this Psalm, Psalm 5. That example being, to ask in simple honesty. And not with a vengeful motive. That is, to be asking that it be done in fairness, in a way that is truly warranted and not in a way that simply makes us feel better. Profound right? Well…

SNS 032: How Does It All Fit Together? Psalm 4, Psalm Tuesday

Have you ever read a Psalm and wondered how it all fits together? For instance, in this Psalm, Psalm 4, the psalmist goes from asking God for help to encouraging others to scream and work things out in private. I’ve wondered how does all this tie together, especially for use in a worship service? But then, but then… I read verses 6-7 in light of what we heard in Psalm 3 last time. Specifically the part about being able to lie down, sleep, and awaken; I now see this is a whole new light. This is about asking for a blessing in order to be a blessing. Isn’t that profound?

One of the most profound expressions of trusting God that I have ever found occurs in Psalm 3. “I lie down, sleep, and awaken because the Lord gives me the strength to do so.” Isn’t this amazing? In this episode, the psalmist shares how his enemies were increasing in number, he even calls them a vast horde. Yet, he will fear them not; instead, he is getting a good night’s sleep and awakens refreshed, secure in who God is. To knowingly trust and not fear; that is profound. Well…

Season 5 | Episode 74: The Necessity of Beauty with Ike Ndolo, Musician & Recording Artist with Common Hymnal

Season 5 | Episode 74: The Necessity of Beauty with Ike Ndolo, Musician & Recording Artist with Common Hymnal

We know that God created everything that is Good, True and Beautiful. How in times like these, with so much that feels so heavy, hurtful and even downright ugly, can we find what is beautiful and in turn find the Divine?

Growing up in Missouri as the son of Nigerian immigrants, the life of Ike Ndolo is a woven tapestry of experiences: Hymns and Bob Marley, injustice and mercy, discrimination and acceptance. As a result, Ike has become a well-tested navigator of the human experience. He aims to share and guide you through stories that inform and even reorient your perspective.

Ike Ndolo released three singles in the summer of 2018, “Guiding Light,” “Your Table” & “Follow Me,” all of which are featured on his third LP, “Shine,” released on September 17th, 2018. Recorded at Gnome Studios in Nashville, TN in conjunction with Hardspeak Records.

    In this episode, we:

    • Consider why beauty is necessary, especially now
    • Take a stroll down Ike’s street to appreciate beauty
    • Cancel guilt associated with tapping out on occasion and running to beauty
    • Walk Ike’s path of his media shifting from artistry to anti-racism work
    • Thank Ike for bringing Black female voices to his media and influence

Join us as we walk towards beauty as resistance. May we trust that we are able to engage in partnership with believers to do today’s justice work.

Upside Down Podcast brings together women (and sometimes a few good men) for unscripted ecumenical conversations about God's upside-down kingdom. We're four women from across the US spanning age, denomination, race, culture, and background. We care deeply about the love of God and neighbor and explore themes of the intersections of faith and justice, with a bit of prophetic imagination. We come together as ordinary humans modeling tough conversations so you can be inspired to continue these conversations offline with your local community. In a time when many Christians are deconstructing their faith, we hope to be a welcoming space where people can be curious, learn, connect, and grow into the beloved community.
