    105: Understanding Early Onset Menopause

    105: Understanding Early Onset Menopause

Today we delve into an important topic that many of us may not yet have on our radar.

Did you know that up to 8% of women have their final period by age 45?

I’ll break down the terminology surrounding menopause, including premature, early menopause, perimenopause, and menopause itself. We explore the symptoms that might catch you by surprise if you're under 44 and experiencing fatigue, insomnia, night sweats, weight gain, and more.

We also discuss the challenges of diagnosing menopause in younger women, the nuances of conditions like premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), and the various factors that can influence whether you'll experience menopause earlier than expected.

For those navigating POI or early menopause and hoping to start a family, we touch on options such as hormone therapies and alternative pathways to parenthood, such as IVF and surrogacy.

We also highlight the importance of mental and emotional health during this transition and offer practical advice for self-care and seeking support. Discover how menopause can be both a challenging journey and an empowering new chapter in your life.

Let's rewrite the narrative on menopause!

    Episode 102: Viva La Vulva

    Episode 102: Viva La Vulva

Gynaecological cancers include cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, vulvar, fallopian tube and placental cancers.

As with any cancer, early detection and awareness is the key to a better health outcome.

Today on The Hormone Hub, we speak with Kath Mazzella OAM, who is a 30year vulvar cancer survivor. Kath shares her experience and the work she has tirelessly been doing to bring awareness and break down the stigmas of gynaecological health.

Starting with... using the anatomically correct terminology.
There's more to it than a vagina.

The vulva is the global term that describes all the structures that make external female genitalia. Which includes the mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vestibular bulbs, vulva vestibule, Bartholin's glands, Skene's glands, urethra, and vaginal opening.

You know your body better than anyone, so if you're experiencing symptoms that are unusual, please get it medically checked...

    What's NOT normal...

Abnormal or persistent vaginal bleeding – such as bleeding after menopause, bleeding that is not part of menstrual periods, or bleeding after sex

Unusual vaginal discharge (if it's ongoing ask for a swab!)
Pain, pressure or discomfort in the abdomen
    Swelling of the abdomen
Change in bowel or bladder habits
    Pain during sex
    Weight loss
Itching, burning or soreness in the vulva
    Lumps, sores or wart-like growths

There are a number of conditions that may cause these symptoms, but please see your doctor as early detection is always best.

    Viva La Vulva!

Episode 96: Best of Hormone Hub - The Pros and Cons of HRT

Episode 96: Best of Hormone Hub - The Pros and Cons of HRT

When the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause begin to affect our quality of life… we do NOT have to suffer through and just put up with it.

Nor do we need to take strong pharmaceuticals that come with their own side effects.

The good news is, there is a middle ground in the form of bioidentical HRT which is now also known as MHT - Menopause Hormone Therapy.

In this “Best of Series” I’ll explain the HRT options that are now available to us, AND why we still need to pay attention to diet, lifestyle, stress management, sleep and exercise.

It doesn’t need to be HRT or natural, it can be both!

I want to give you the facts so you can make informed decisions about what YOU feel is right for YOUR body.

    I break it down into...

    * Diet and lifestyle considerations, whether you’re choosing to use MHT or not
    * Who MHT is suitable for and when it’s appropriate to use it
    * Why MHT should never be one size fits all. We look at the 3 different options available, depending on where you’re at in your peri/menopause journey
    * The risks and downsides of MHT

Episode 94: Best of Hormone Hub - Hi, I'm Kylie Pinwill Your Perimenopause and Menopause Nutritionist

In this “Best of Summer Series” I picked a few of my most popular episodes for you to relax, listen and enjoy!

Today I share my hormonal roller coaster story and why I ended up specialising in the perimenopause and menopause space. 🥰

As a business owner, 52 yr old perimenopausal Mum of 3 teenagers and a wife of 22 years I know that the struggle can be real!

I had half my thyroid removed 17 years ago, have experienced adrenal fatigue and burn out (more than once 🤦‍♀️) and am still in perimenopause with regular periods and pleased to report that I’ve never had a hot flush! Touching all the wood right now…

Listen in to this week’s episode on how I manage my own hormonal dance, my non-negotiables when it comes to my health, hormones and happiness, and my biggest perimenopause symptom I constantly struggle with… which if you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while, you might already know!

I hope you enjoy this episode and thanks for listening!

Episode 93: Ageing With Radiance with Dr Prudence Hall

Episode 93: Ageing With Radiance with Dr Prudence Hall

Today we have the incredible Dr. Prudence Hall joining us on The Hormone Hub. Dr. Hall, founder of the Hall Center in Santa Monica, California, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in regenerative and integrated medicine when it comes to ageing and menopause.

Dr. Prudence shares her transformative journey from traditional gynaecological surgery to a more holistic approach after realising the shortfalls of conventional gynaecological treatments of menopause.

She was an early advocate for the use of bioidentical hormone therapy back in the 1980s and takes a proactive approach in terms of managing stress, diet, sleep and exercise to achieve optimal well being through menopause.

Episode 86: The Benefits of Food Sensitivity Testing

Episode 86: The Benefits of Food Sensitivity Testing

If you’ve been suffering long term, unresolved health issues, then perhaps the answer lies in identifying any food sensitivities.

Today on The Hormone Hub podcast we have naturopath and vice president of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS) Rebecca Lang.

It’s no coincidence that both Rebecca and I use a Food Sensitivity Test with every client as it helps identify symptom triggers for a range of conditions, including skin problems like eczema and acne, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, headaches, joint pain, weight gain and even behavioural concerns like brain fog, insomnia, and low energy levels.

In this episode, we chat about:

    • Why we choose this particular test over other tests and why it’s so important to identify the causes of inflammation?

    • What areas do we see the best results in?

    • Why compliance with this test is easier for clients versus an elimination or even a FODMAP diet?

If you just can’t pinpoint what it is that’s triggering your symptoms, then you can’t miss this episode!

Episode 84: Pelvic Pain - A Fresh Approach to Endometriosis and Adenomyosis With Dr. Peta Wright

Episode 84: Pelvic Pain - A Fresh Approach to Endometriosis and Adenomyosis With Dr. Peta Wright

Women with pelvic pain often suffer in silence with little support, often giving up after multiple attempts for answers and appropriate medical relief.

Many women go under the knife - often multiple times - to treat their endometriosis or being prescribed heavy-duty drugs for period pain without noticeable improvement.

Today on The Hormone Hub we have prominent gynecologist and fertility specialist Dr. Peta Wright who is able to give us an insight into how the current medical model is failing women and she makes the case for a range of other treatments not usually prescribed, including an anti-inflammatory diet, exercise, stress management, and therapeutic work focused on addressing the effects of trauma in the body.

She is a big advocate of empowering women to ask the right questions, get the right treatment, and make lifestyle changes that bring about release from pain.

If you have a history of pelvic pain, endometriosis or adenomyosis then you can’t miss this episode.

Dr Wright practices at the stunning Vera Women’s Wellness clinic, outside Brisbane or learn more with her book Healing Pelvic Pain, available online or at all good bookstores.
