Liz Miller-Gershfeld, Executive Art Producer (formerly at Energy BBDO / worked on Jack Daniels, Wrigley gum, etc. / with David LaChapelle, Nadav Kander...) — Part 1

Liz Miller-Gershfeld is an Executive Art Producer in Chicago, IL. After two decades at advertising juggernaut Energy BBDO, she has branched out on her own — working freelance for agencies AND photographers. A few photographers she's worked with: David LaChapelle, Nadav Kander, Laurie Frankel, Robert Whitman, and many others. Past campaigns she's worked on: Jack Daniels, Wrigley gum, Ocean Spray, Pearle Vision, plus plenty of others. Listen as we discuss: how she finds photographers to hire, treatments (their importance, plus who actually reads them!), advice to fellow art producers, who photographers should approach at ad agencies, the dangers of not understanding licensing, AI, and lots more. This is Part 1 of our interview.

Check out Liz’s tear sheets by iconic photographers on her portfolio site. It’s a great blend of clients and approaches.

I’m your host, Neil Binkley, Founder of The Personal Photography Project. We are a resource for art producers, photo editors and all creatives to discover photographers (and their licensable images) through their personal work.

Finding Success & Community as an NFT Artist with Justin Mezzell of Grim Syndicate

Finding Success + Community as an NFT Artist

Looking for your next big creative opportunity?

Betting on yourself, your creativity, and your future is scary AF.

You have to dive into the unknown without knowing the end outcome: that’s where opportunities and community live.

That’s the story of today’s guest—Justin Mezzell—a modern-day savant in the realms of illustration, digital art, UI/UX design, and copywriting.

He’s also one of the ring leaders and the artist behind the rapidly growing Grim Syndicate NFT community.

But it’s Justin’s story, perspective, empathy, humor, and drive that you’re going to love today. He’s carved out his own lane to success all outside of a full-time day job and being a family man to a wickedly supportive wife and 3 kiddos.

In this episode, we talk shop on opportunities for creators in the NFT space, community building, experimenting, crypto, and all-out focus for a season.

My goal with this episode is to show you how trusting the process and rooting your work in play will lead to your big break one day if you stick with it.

Deep Natter 18: Always Be a Beginner

In this episode, Sean and I are talking about output, not in terms of what we produce, but how the work I’ve recently dipped my toes into the world of synthesizers, something I’ve been interested in for years but never really pursued. In this episode, Sean and I talk about the importance of pursuing creative interests outside of your “main” pursuits for no other purpose but to, as Sean puts it, always be a beginner at something. We also talk about Tinker Toys, a band called Snarky Puppy, what a good guy Jason Momoa seems to be and a whole lot more.

    The Power of Personal Projects

Looking for a proven strategy to land clients that feels like play?

This is the power of personal projects and the doors they can open.

That’s the story of today’s guest—Kiel (Keel) Mutschelknaus (Mut•chick•nouse)—a sorcerer of code, animation, motion graphics, and type.

He’s the wizard behind the Space Type Generator, a personal project that’s helped land him big-name clients like the New York Times, MIT Tech Review, Wall Street Journal, and Apple.

What fascinates me the most is that he has built this success all outside his teaching day job and being a family man to three little nuggets at home.

In this episode, we talk shop on niching down and hiring yourself for a season, focusing on play over making cheddar, showing the work you want, and more.

My goal with this episode is to show how building personal projects around your strange and weird interests are the key to attracting big opportunities.

032 ~ The Power of Personal Projects

032 ~ The Power of Personal Projects

We are all curious. It is in our nature. Sometimes it is good to let that curiosity out in the form of a project that is outside of the products or services you offer to your clients.

Doing this can result in new products or services, new connections, and possibly even entirely new businesses you hadn't considered before.

The is a power in (intentionally) creating personal projects from time to time and letting your mind explore. You never know where it may lead.

Deep Natter 02: Chasing Idea Fuel

In this episode of Deep Natter, we're talking about effort, specifically whether and how and to what degree effort is connected to the value of the things we make. To help illustrate how effort can affect or influence the end product, we refer to a couple terrific films by Werner Herzog. If you would like to listen to these conversations live or participate with a question or comment, join us on the Clubhouse app Tuesdays at 2pm Eastern.

Deep Natter 01: You Can’t Control the Response

Deep Natter 01: You Can’t Control the Response

In this debut episode of Deep Natter, Sean and I are talking about long-term projects and curating our own work. Each of us have been circling a personal project for years and as luck would have it, coming out of a global pandemic was just the catalyst we needed to stop thinking and start doing. We also talk about the importance of making the things you want to see in the world, rather than worrying about how they might be received by an audience and Sean shares one of his favorite recent books.

S2E19 Prioritizing time for family, personal projects, & CAD/design strategies | James Drachenberg

I first found James on his personal website and immediately realized this is an engineer who truly loves design. Why else would one spend the countless hours of personal time required to design one’s own, teenage mutant ninja turtle action figures, GameBoy cartridge cases, and, of course, the infamous Robo kitty. A few years ago I invited James to lunch and we’ve kept in touch ever since. James shares some great tips for design, and how to get noticed in this episode of the BAE podcast.
