What Does the Bible Say About Substance Abuse #4

What Does the Bible Say About Substance Abuse #4

This is the 4th and final episode that Arnie and Fred discuss substance abuse.  In this episode we focus on the popular use of tobacco products such as smoking, dipping, chewing and vaping. We begin by noting that there are legitimate uses of tobacco that God approves of. But is proven that tobacco is harmful to the human body if not used for God's intended purposes. We talk about its various harmful physical effects. We note that tobacco use is extremely addictive and very difficult for those addicted to quit. We look at a number of Bible passages that warn against allowing ourselves to become overcome and slaves to anything. We talk about various surprising statistics relating to the abuse of tobacco products. Finally, we look specifically at the use of E Cigarettes and the Vaping associated with that.  Again, we note the surprisingly harmful effects of these popular products. Take about 30 minutes to listen to our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript provided for this Buzzsprout episode.

    Ladybug, Ladybug Fly Away Home

    Ladybug, Ladybug Fly Away Home

Ladybugs (Ladybirds or Coccinellidae) are a widespread family of small beetles. Regardless of their name, they are not bugs nor birds. We’re not sure where their name comes from but it might come from "Beetle of Our Lady" in reference to the Virgin Mary. Many cultures consider them good luck, this is probably because they sometimes eat unwanted pests which helps preserve crops.

In The Good The Bad the News

This week it's complicated. Jennifer talks about the cocaine hippos from Colombia and how they have become the first animals recognized as “legal persons” in the U.S. (If you want to learn more about them listen to our episode all about Hippopotamus found at the link below). Then she talks Penis worms that lived in the depths of ancient seas more than 500 million years ago. Amber didn’t look into bad news because bad news is sad, but for her good news refugees in Cameroon have turned a desert camp into a thriving forest.

Ladybugs are often brightly colored with small black spots on their wing covers, with black legs, heads and antennae.  However, they are not all red and some are not colorful at all. There are 6,000 ladybug species worldwide and almost 500 species in North America.

Unfortunately, due to invasive species of ladybugs, such as the Harlequin ladybird (Asian lady beetle, Asian Ladybug) and the Seven-spotted ladybug, native North American ladybug species, such as the nine-spotted ladybug, are becoming displace and even extinct in some areas.

Listen now to learn about the good luck bug, one of nature's natural pests, and  also, one of nature's natural pest controls.

    139 Ladybird Ladybug

    139 Ladybird Ladybug

They're not ladies and they're not birds; they're not even technically bugs! But that's not the most surprising thing about ladybirds/ladybugs and their brilliant variety of names. Tamsin Majerus AKA Dr Ladybird explains why ladybirds are so great; and Johanna Mayer and Elah Feder of the podcast Science Diction, about words and the science stories behind them, consider what's in a (ladybird) name.

This episode is one half of a collaboration with Science Diction, so go to their feed to listen to their episode It’ll Never Fly, where they set me a quiz about the outlandish and intriguing names given to fruitfly genes.

The good, bad, and ugly of garden insects

The good, bad, and ugly of garden insects

In the garden, no one likes to see holes in foliage, or fruits and vegetables being eaten, yet some feeding is expected if you rely on beneficial insects to help manage pest problems. Predatory insects will not show up unless the population of damaging insects is high enough to support them through their life cycle. In this episode, learn about some of the insects in your yard and garden, and how they can impact each other and your harvest.

    Bagworm

    Bagworm

This week we're talking about the bagworm, a type of caterpillar that makes its case from poop wallpaper and materials like leaves and sticks! Listen to learn more about this interesting insect, its life cycle, and why it's seen as a major pest in many parts of the world.

Food Bandits - Keeping Your Garden Free of Animals

Food Bandits - Keeping Your Garden Free of Animals

It truly sucks to setup your garden, fertilize, water and see the future harvest starting to come forth, only to see it ravaged by food bandits, those little (and sometimes big) fury creatures who don’t care one bit that you worked hard to have food for your family. But you don’t have to see your hard work get eaten bite by bite. There are things you can do to thwart those pesky little friends from eating your garden vegetables.

Ep.28 - As we reach 10,000 Podcast downloads, Saul and Lucy answer a listener question on Greenhouse Temperature control and look at the ways in which they control pests trying to make a meal of their precious plants and produce...

As the Coronovirus pandemic has changed many aspects of life over the past three months, the gardens and green spaces all across the UK have continued in full glory over the spring - but Summer has arrived and for many the outdoors is the sanctuary from the continued uncertainty of what lies ahead. Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy have still been full at work at Stonelands and Easy Donyland (as well as their own gardens) and continue to share their lives as professional Horticulturists, there tips and tricks and their observations of their gardening lives.

Reaching 10,000 downloads for the podcast is something Saul and Lucy would never imagined when they set it up back in January, but so much has changed since then, and the pair want to thank everyone who have taken time out of their days to listen. In this episode we answer a question from one of our twitter follows in how we manage temperature in our greenhouses, very relevant in this recent hot spell - and then we go on to look at pest management in our gardens - both cultural, chemical and biological.

Also a really big thank-you to Katrina of the Home Grown Garden Youtube channel who plugged our podcast in her recent May Allotment vLog - we're really grateful and love the stuff you are doing - please do check out her videos: click here.
