Grieving the Loss of a Pet

Grieving the Loss of a Pet

The global pet market is worth $261B. Additionally, U.S. pet owners will spend nearly $110B on their pets this year, with $490M on Halloween costumes alone. These stats (and more) are shared on this week's episode and are provided by PetKeen.com.

More importantly, there are an estimated 14 million pet deaths each year in the U.S., which, when combined with the other 40+ losses, creates a lot of grievers annually.

It's commonplace to replace the death of a pet with a new one. And as a society, we don't view the death of a beloved pet in the same way we view the death of the humans in our lives. However, all the same, the death of a pet can be a tremendous loss for someone.

Considering how much we love our pets and how many of us are pet owners, you would think we would be more compassionate toward those who must surrender or say goodbye to a companion who held a pivotal role in their daily lives. And yet, there is still so much education to be done in grief - even when grieving a four-legged fur baby, bird, snake, or whatever creature has captured your heart.

Loss of a Pet - Grief and Bereavement
    What is grief?
Grief is a universal emotion which everyone will inevitably experience in their lifetime as a result of loss. Bereavement is the state of being emotionally overwhelmed due to such loss and it is considered normal.
Experiencing the death of a beloved one can be one of life's most devastating events, leaving a profound and lasting impact. When a beloved pet passes away, it is understandable to feel immense grief and sorrow due to the strong bond that has been created. A lot of people consider their furry friends to be as close as family members, so these emotions are perfectly normal.
    Relationships with our animals
The grief experienced from the death of a beloved pet can be just as profound as the sorrow of losing a human family member. The bond between humans and animals is quite remarkable as they provide unconditional love and companionship. In return for their loyalty and companionship, we give our pets the love and care they need in order to thrive. Pets can provide us with a feeling of home, safety and identity. If we lose them, the disruption to our lives is significant; they keep our secrets and offer us unconditional love - no matter what.
Losing a pet can be even more traumatic than losing a human loved-one.  Human decline is left to run it’s course and can lead to suffering, long term illness and pain, and often, we are relieved when our loved ones pass.  The advantage of losing a pet is that we can sometimes choose the time of their passing to avoid long-term pain and illness.
    What does grief feel like?
People often underestimate the depths of their sadness when expecting or dealing with the passing of a beloved pet. Grief can be emotionally overwhelming and can take a heavy toll on the mind & body of an individual. It may prove to be difficult to manage and cope with such intense emotions. Each person experiences grief in a different way. Even though kids and adults experience grief differently, children can feel grief as strongly as adults do. However, the way they express their grief may also be different.
People typically associate grieving with a particular set of stages that progress in an orderly fashion; howev

Laura West is a Registered Nurse, energy healer, psychic medium, author, and podcast host dedicated to both the sciences and spirituality.

She hosts her own podcast called A Guided Life and authored her book titled Guided.

She is dedicated to spreading the word of love and teaching others how to communicate with their spirit guides through intuition.

Growing up Laura did not experience a lot of death, her Grandmother died when she was a teenager and Laura shares what she thinks her parents did correctly surrounding the illness and death.

Her experiences with grief are not as different than the rest of us even though she is a psychic medium but after her Grandmother died and she visited in her dreams, Laura had the confirmation needed to accept her gifts as a medium.

The time that Laura felt the most grief was after her dog died, and in our culture there can be a lot of shame connected to greiving pets, but she shares with us her experience.

Jill also shares why she sometimes feels she doesn’t grieve “properly”.

In the episode, we mention when I was a guest on Laura’s podcast as well as an episode she did about processing anxiety after being spiritually awakened.  There is a link in the timestamps to both of those episodes if you would like to listen to them.
