    Working Class Heroes

    Working Class Heroes

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes back Jerard Fagerberg from Episode 603: From Jack Kerouac to British Coal Miners, The History of The Workingman’s Drink. Two renowned beer culture writers, Pete Brown and Dave Infante also join us for a conversation about unionizing in the craft beer industry.

The episode kicks off with Pete’s description of the pubs and private clubs in Britain, along with his solid argument about how Shakespeare, Beyonce, and Charles Dicken all share a favorite spot in London. We also get to listen to Pete’s upcoming book, “Clubland,” and the inspiration behind it. The discussion then moves back to the States with Dave and Jerard talking about unions among craft breweries, and interindustry solidarity in organizing. While Jerard brings up Fair State Brewing Cooperative as a shining example of successful unions, Dave talks about the struggles and failures that workers might face in this uphill battle.

Last but certainly not least, the gang dives deep into class consciousness and its education among mainstream discord, talking about Kim Kelly’s “Fight Like Hell,” football, and what Pete calls football. Pete also talks more about the Working Men’s Club and his working-class background.

The Cure For COVID-19 (Pete Brown, Ross on Wye's Thorn Perry Tasting)

The Cure For COVID-19 (Pete Brown, Ross on Wye's Thorn Perry Tasting)

Join hosts Gabe Cook, Grant Hutchison and Martyn Goodwin-Sharman on their tropical island of all things cider!

The guys discuss Frightened Rabbit as an answer on a game show, TV appearances and unflattering celebrity comparisons (It's Ed Sheeran!) before delving into the news.

Grant kicks off things with a return of Roger Wilkins, who has found the cure to covid! After the guys restored his honour in a previous episode, the now scientist has proclaimed his vitamin-heavy drink is the answer to the world’s problems. Gabe then takes the guys through the upcoming Cidercon, the world’s biggest cider gathering, which is now open for registration.

This week’s interview is with a man who’s not just in the know with cider, he’s actually written the book on it. We’re happy to welcome three time Beer Writer of the Year winner, Pete Brown! Highly acclaimed beer and cider writer, Pete’s got a huge library of stories and an equal breadth of published books to match. From Craft: An Argument to The Apple Orchard, Pete takes the guys through the cider regions who think they invented it, cider top trumps with Tom Oliver, the problem with ‘craft’ in cider and wanky writing. We cannot confirm or deny if he had a masturbate after the recording!

The featured cider this week is Ross on Wye’s Thorn Perry. Gabe’s favourite variety of pear, it’s a big, bold and bright perry with some very intense character. The Horse of Knowledge makes a return to discuss the Pet Nat process as the guys take their time with the drink.

Finally, they go through the listener’s questions, featuring Burum Collective’s Helen asking about education in cider, before Grant reads out the listener’s weirdest places to drink cider in the weirdest Grant voice you’ll ever hear.

Defining Craft Beer with Pete Brown

Defining Craft Beer with Pete Brown

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes Pete Brown from London to talk about his newest book, Craft: An Argument. As some breweries and guilds lean into descriptors like “independent breweries,” “good beer,” or “micro-breweries,” Pete makes the case for why craft still has meaning. His book was written in quarantine and draws on a wide range of resources from Garrett Oliver to Michael Jackson and even Descartes. Toronto-based beer writer, Stephen Beaumont joins the conversation as well, along with B.R. Rolya of Shelton Brothers. Together they talk about the meaning of craft beer to breweries internationally, discuss draft versus cans, and talk about some of the biggest beer sales that have called the meaning of craft into question.

    Episode 470: Shipwreck Yeast

This week on Beer Sessions Radio Jimmy is joined by Jamie Adams to discuss an expedition by Saint James Brewery to rescue old beer bottles from an 1886 shipwreck. Jamie is accompanied in the studio by the team of divers he has worked with over the past several years: Captain Patrick Rooney, Captain Andy Favata, and Captain John Bricker. Not only have these divers discovered a number of bottles still perfectly intact, but Saint James Brewery has extracted the yeast from those beers to create new brews. Beer writer, Pete Brown calls in from the U.K. to offer his historical expertise on what beers this team may have discovered. As these guests share stories about how they got involved in this project and pose questions about how to continue their exploration going forward, they enjoy the fruits of their labor – three ales with yeast dating back over 100 years.
