New Year, New Episode of Food Farms and Chefs with NoProof Seltzer, Bitchin' Kitten Brewery, and Philly Waffle Cabin

"Dry January" and healthier lifestyle choices are two of the top resolutions we hear you're making, so we asked Chris Carney, the owner of NoProof Seltzer to join us on the show. NoProof is a non-alcoholic energy drink with an orange-citrus flavor, infused with beneficial vitamins, no sugar added, and a light caffeine kick. Chris started his company when he was looking for something that was alcohol free, healthier for you to consume, and offered a caffeine boost - without the unnecessary added sugars and artificial flavors. When he couldn't find anything on the market, he found a way to create his own, and now you can enjoy the benefits and refreshing taste of NoProof Seltzer!

Now, we're aware that not everyone participates in "Dry January," so we spoke with one of the co-founders of Bitchin' Kitten Brewery, Michael Crosson. Michael and his wife, Bridgette, started the brewery inspired by her Bridgette-smitten kitten (Shadow) and Michael's enthusiasm of home-brewing. After years of successfully being a home-brewer, Michael landed an apprenticeship at Tindall Road Brewery to gain more experience and knowledge of brewing on a larger scale, and in October of 2021 they opened the doors to their brewpub in Morrisville, PA!

Some people like beverages, others have a hankering for something sweet which is why we spoke with Jenny Gardner who owns Philly Waffle Cabin! What is Philly Waffle Cabin? Well, it's one of those delightful joys where you'll smell the tantalizing scent of freshly-made Belgian waffles in the air before you find where the fully mobile version of the Waffle House Cabin franchise is located at. Born from the slopes, this skier-friendly treat can now be wherever you would like! So, if you're familiar with the tasty treats then you already know why you'd want to seek some out--but if you're not, then let us introduce you to Philly Waffle Cabin and why they're so sought-after on (and now off) the slopes!

Booze Battle - "World War Beer"

Booze Battle - "World War Beer"

Big Z, Chris and Rob join Matt for a Booze Battle! The world of beer is at war! Get ready for a whirlwind of brews—each of us have brought two beers to the tasting table—one from our chosen country and another from the United States as the "ally" beer. The most tasty pairing shall win the war.  Rob's got a Lindemans Framboise Raspberry Lambic and a Founders Breakfast Stout, while Chris is shaking things up with a Bottingtons Pub Ale and Left Hand Milk Stout concoction. Big Z, not to be outdone, presents an Innis & Gun Caribbean Rum Cask Beer and a New Trail Thunder Clap Hazy Double IPA. Yours truly, Matt, is armed with a Spaten Optimator and a Workhorse Coffee Vanilla Porter. With the wide array of flavors on the table, you can almost taste the anticipation!

As we sip and savor each brew, we dive into a lively discussion about the origin countries, aroma, and the unique flavors each beer brings. Ever tried mixing beers? We're not sure we recommend it but it was a lot of fun!

Who will be crowned the World War Beer Booze Battle Champion?

Tilray's Big Buy and pairing beer with tinned fish

Tilray's Big Buy and pairing beer with tinned fish

We had to wing it this week...

Unfortunately, our guest had a last minute emergency this week and we'll have to reschedule Larry for another time.  It's cool, we've got this.  We can always talk about beer.

    Canned Fish and Beer Pairing?

One of our latest obsessions is tinned seafood.  Sounds like we're kind of late to the party here but at least we made it to the party.  I've always enjoyed a nice kipper or some tuna salad but there's a whole world out there I had no idea about.  Fish lovers have their own forums, inside jokes, and memes just like beer nerds.  Weirdos.  We offer up some pairing suggestions for those that want to explore this salty world with us.  Grab yourself some deens (that's what the cool kids call sardines) and grab a brew.  If you've got any favorites please let us know.

Tilray Buys a Bunch of Breweries

The big news in beer this week is Tilray's purchase of 8 brands from Anheuser Busch.  There's plenty of debate on whether this is a smart or dumb move for Tilray.  It seems they got a great price on the package, less than AB paid for just one of the breweries when they acquired them.

The purchase of Sweetwater started Tilray (Aphria at the time) down the beer path and they acquired a few others since then.  Here in Atlanta we've enjoyed Alpine and Green Flash brews on tap at the Sweetwater taproom.  Maybe we'll see a cornucopia of these legacy brands there in the future.

German beer sales down, Guinness has a record year

Sounds like our German friends are easing up their drinking as sales are reported to be down 2.9% compared to last year.  The country saw a bit of a boost once Covid restrictions lifted but that has gone away.  In contrast to that, Guinness had it's best year ever with sales up 9% across all regions.  Truly a lovely day for a pint.

    The Beer List

    • Deschutes / Bitburger - Dry Hop’d Zwickl
    • Meier’s Creek - Dark Logger
    • Decadent Ales - AC/DC PWR⚡UP Juicy IPA (6.66%)
    • Bluejacket - They Both Melt (Dunkel)
    • El Segundo - Greetings from El Segundo Anniversary Ale (TIPA)
    • Three Taverns Beeps - Lager

224: Julia Herz of the American Homebrewers Association Connects the Dots Between Beer and Flavor

224: Julia Herz of the American Homebrewers Association Connects the Dots Between Beer and Flavor
Julia Herz is only a couple months into her new role as Executive Director of the American Homebrewers Association (https://www.homebrewersassociation.org), but she's long been a craft beer voice and advocate with deep experience in the realm of food and beer pairing. As the former Craft Beer Program Director for the Brewers Association, she developed a library of resources to help brewers understand the nexus of beer and food, and to increase the number and quality of occasions for beer drinking. Now, in her new role as head of the world’s largest association of homebrewers, she starts her next chapter thinking about how homebrewing, and craft beer in general, can mean more to even more people than it has in the past. In this episode, Herz discusses: The immediate challenges to homebrewing and long term goals Connecting the professional and amateur sides of brewing Thinking about flavor in a way that’s externally relatable Understanding the food flavor triangle Pairing strategies with bridges, links, hooks, and echoes Developing a mind-palate connection and articulating a language of flavor Overcoming flavor bias Making brewing more relevant to those from all walks of like And more. “So many brewers are world-class sensory experts when it comes to beer, but I still want to see brewers come along and understand how to describe flavor and what their beers go with,” says Herz. “Winemakers do know how to do that. Winemakers are in that arena, day in and day out.” *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): What if you could chill your beer with a more efficient chiller?
