Retro Encounter is blasting off again with two episodes on Cosmic Star Heroine, a 2010s crowdfunding success heavily inspired by specific 16-bit RPGs. The panel loves the visual style and battle system of Cosmic Star Heroine, but isn't 100% sold on the story, characters, or soundtrack. 259 - Phantasy Star IV Part II

Phantasy Star IV is the culmination of a four-game saga that puts the 2,000-year struggle of the Algol System into a context, and in today's Retro Encounter episode we dive deep into its final battle.  We spent plenty of time in Phantasy Star IV's battles and dungeons, but we forget to go into the adorable final credits scene.  That's our error.

It's macros, combos, and more in the latest Retro Encounter!

Retro Encounter visits a faraway galaxy in a game from a long time ago (don't @ me Disney) in Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium, one of the most acclaimed RPGs for the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive if you're a peein'.

It took us 5 years and 257 episodes to talk about Sega RPGs a second time, but it was worth it!

Ep 5: Phantasy Star w/ Robert
Robert and Paul take it back to the old school with the original Phantasy Star, a game that was ahead of its time when released in 1989. Learn why Paul's friends thought this was a game for girls, his first JRPG, and the tropes and plotlines that inspired three (excellent) sequels. Theme song is "Chiptronical" by Patrick de Arteagna (https://patrickdearteaga.com/chiptune-8-bit-retro/).

We promised you more Phantasy Star, and now we deliver. Welcome to episode 4 of the RPGFan music podcast.

♪ A whole new world / A brand new place I never knew ♪ Wait, that's Aladdin. Wrong new world. The Phantasy Star lovefest continues with a look at where the series went after leaving the Genesis. Our tracks come from an Online future, the furthest reaches of the Universe, and a Portable galaxy that travels wherever you do. You might just be surprised at how many musical connections these games share with the good ol' days.

On a special note, we're proud to debut the show's new theme music. This lovely piano arrangement of the Random Encounter theme was provided for us by Kan Gao, the talented composer for To the Moon and the upcoming A Bird Story. Thank you, Kan!

As always, we welcome any feedback you may have, including topic suggestions, track requests, or ideas for how we can improve. (We also love fanmail! Hint hint.)

    1 - Fragile Dreamcast

We are very, very pleased to debut RPGFan's newest feature: Rhythm Encounter! Spun off from our special Music of the Year episode, Rhythm Encounter is a new, music-centric show that focuses squarely on the music we all know and love! Each episode will be broken down into a section discussing albums we've recently reviewed at RPGFan Music and a second section based on a "special topic." For our inaugural episode, we decided to take a listen to some of the greatest tunes from the greatest Dreamcast RPGs (and one adventure) of yesteryear! Stay tuned afterwards for some news and other music-related items of interest!

The first episode of our new music-centric podcast features a sampling of music from a wide variety of games, including such gems as Wadjet Eye's Primordia and NIS America's Mugen Souls. Our special topic for this episode's listening and discussing is "everything Dreamcast," so if you're a fan of SEGA's final foray into the hardware market, be sure to stick around!

If you have suggestions for topics you'd like to hear, questions you'd like us to address, criticisms or ways we can improve, or anything of that nature, be sure to send us an email!

The Random Hour joins Sword of SEGA this week as we have our very first guest host, foreversonic! Much like the Magic Box show of last season, we let Auto DJ run rampant and allowed fate to dictate the music, and well, we ended up with quite a nice selection indeed. Plus, we're taking a break from our Sword of SEGA Role Playing Adventure to visit the magical land of Brightondra! Whoo! So join CapnCloudchaser and foreversonic for something a little bit different this week.
