    Highlights from the interview

In search of professional fulfillment, Natasha launched her online business Fertility Pharmacist in 2019.   Her personal struggle with infertility inspired her to help other families.

Natasha and her husband worked as pharmacists in Bethel, Alaska for 7 years.  Their journey to two successful IVF pregnancies began in Alaska.  To explore employment opportunities with the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, visit https://www.ykhc.org.

Natasha credits Dr. Julie Lamb from Pacific Northwest Fertility as an important part of her successful IVF journey and recommends researching the science their fertility clinic providers use.  Tour the lab, and learn how they freeze and thaw eggs, train staff, and more.  These are all topics Natasha coaches on.

In January 2022, Natasha taught six students via her Online Fertility Academy.  Then, she coached two students one-on-one after the course concluded.  Natasha mentioned that her Hope Plus Method includes elements of functional medicine, such as education about environmental toxins, sleep, hydration, and more.  There is a waiting list for the next round of Online Fertility Academy students.  It should start in summer 2022.  Contact Natasha for more information about the online academy or one-on-one coaching through her website https://www.fertilitypharmacist.com.

What’s next for Fertility Pharmacist?  Natasha wants to demonstrate how to handle and administer fertility drugs via her social media channels.  To subscribe to Natasha’s social media channels, check out the links above.  She also wants to offer DUTCH testing to patients and provide clinical input on medications to other healthcare professionals who help their own clients with fertility concerns.

Natasha works 30 hours/week at the Indian Health Service (IHS), but she is not a Public Health Service employee.  She is a hepatitis case manager in her workplace, has cured 19 people of hepatitis, and works to save the clinic money using patient assistance programs and other strategies.  According to Natasha, IHS is family-friendly, and the healthcare benefits are excellent.  Plus, she does not work weekends, and does not report to work on 10 federal holidays.  Her husband is transitioning from his hospital pharmacist role to an IT pharmacist role.

In addition to being an entrepreneur and clinical pharmacist for IHS, Natasha heads the Narcan program in her town.  She educates people on the signs of drug overdose and how to use Narcan.

You can find Natasha in the Spring 2021 issue of PharmaSIS Magazine.

Pharmacists need encouragement and support from other pharmacists.  During our interview, Natasha encouraged pharmacists to, “Hold on to your original mission for becoming a pharmacist.”

Pharmacist Moms need encouragement too.  Natasha said, “Have a good support team around you.  Never give up!”  We also agreed that, “The years are short, but the days are long.”

The second half of our interview centered around being Moms.  We discussed:

      • A good time to start a family.
      • Her favorite things about being a Mom
      • Challenges she faces as a Mom
      • Fun Mom’s Night Out ideas
      • Me time activities
      • Pregnancy cravings
      • Book and product suggestions (see above)

    Highlights from the interview

As a writer in a public health setting early in her career, Megan learned how to massage information to make it more digestible and actionable for the general public.

Information impacts behavior.  Misinformation has an impact on the health of communities.  Relevant and accurate information helps people live healthier lives.

We talked about Megan’s writing style as a health content writer.  Writing style can take time to develop.  You will learn what comes easily or is difficult through practice.  You must practice to figure it out.

It’s harder to write a piece that’s not in your area of expertise.  It’s “a heavier lift.”  You need to find your niche so it’s easy to write.  It’s hard to scale a business writing for clients who aren’t a good match for your skills.  Find a lane you feel comfortable in and that feels natural to you so you can maximize your expertise and your impact in that lane.

Megan shared two stories about how feedback on her writing influenced her.  Feedback can help a writer find the right clients.

Who are Megan’s ideal clients?  Either digital health companies or innovative health companies, especially those who have either primarily black audiences or have a segment of their audience who is black.  Megan likes working with clients who are specific about their audience and the types of actions or behaviors they are trying to stimulate.

There’s always room for a new perspective in the writing community.  All of our perspectives are different.  There are people out there who share your perspective and will be maximally impacted because they share your perspective.  You will perform your best when you are writing for an audience you can relate to or that you’re passionate about or have expertise in.

Megan is a Health Content Writing Coach.  Her program is called Health Professionals to Health Writers.  You can find it linked to her profile on LinkedIn (as of December 2021).  Her YouTube Channel is also called Health Writing For Health Professionals; it includes videos on Wednesdays:  tips for getting started in health content writing and lessons Megan has learned along the way.

Nontraditional pharmacists need to share what they do so that other pharmacists feel inspired to use their pharmacist identity and skills to do something nontraditional too.  We talked about how imposter syndrome can make it tough to “toot our horns.”

Megan is bilingual.  She speaks Spanish and English.  During her career as a pharmacist, she worked for an MTM company who needed a Spanish-speaking pharmacist consultant to help Spanish-speaking patients.

We concluded the interview with six questions for Megan:

    1. What are some pitfalls about content strategy creation?
    2. How can a writer address health literacy in consumer-facing content without being patronizing?
    3. How do you like the research part of being a writer?
    4. What’s your favorite part of being a writer?
    5. What are some challenges you face?
    6. What are some tools and resources you use?

Dr. Janan Sarwar and I met at the October 2021 Medipreneurs Summit in Cincinnati, OH.  Janan found out about Medipreneurs from someone who worked with Medipreneurs Co-Founder Dr. Michelle Fritsch on her book Preventive Maintenance for a High Mileage Life (Kindle Version).

How does Janan use her voice as an advocate?  Janan advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from a healthcare perspective:  research (clinical trials), underserved patients, marginalized patients, and also advocates children understanding diversity in terms of, “What is diversity?”  DEI exists in many forms:  age, gender, ethnicity, geography, physical ability, unseen abilities, and religious beliefs.  Children learn from others.  We can all learn from others.

How did Janan learn about diversity in clinical trials?  Janan looks at the patient population studied in a clinical trial compared to those in the real world who have the condition.  Ex:  Black women and breast cancer.  Diversity may be affected by the ability to take time away from work, transportation, and other factors.  Inclusion in trials can affect health beliefs, willingness to take medications, and openness with healthcare providers.

Janan is writing a children’s story about DEI.  It’s about baking cookies with her daughters.  The sugar got left out of the cookie dough.  After the cookies were baked, icing and sprinkles were used to sweeten the cookies.  This is how Janan sees DEI in the world.  Diversity is missing form the recipe.  We need DEI in decision-making from the start.  She thinks we are moving in the right direction with getting the sugar in from the start.

Janan’s career has been in book-publishing.  She likes the idea of “windows” and “mirrors” in children’s books.  A window book lets us see something that’s outside.  Ex:  fantasy, another culture, another world. A mirror book is something you read because you “see yourself” in it.  Ex: an issue you’re dealing with.

A 2017 study showed that <7% of children’s books were about people of color, neurodiversity, etc.  There’s been a gap in the market.  The nonprofit organization We Need Diverse Books is trying to publish mirror and window books with greater diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Caucasian children need more window books.  People of color need more mirror books.

It’s very important to read books that are both windows and mirrors; they make children want to read more.  Books can also impact career paths.

Janan’s Independent Book publishing company is called Global Bookshelves International.  The books she wants to publish are the English-language version of already-published books from around the world.  They are both windows and mirrors.  Ex: from Singapore.

Because of her daughter Leena’s podcast (Salaam Storytime), Janan has connected with publishers and people who have created diverse books.  She’s bringing their content to North American and selling it here. If you’re interested in writing a book in one of 3 areas, contact Janan at globalbookshelves@gmail.com:

    1. Children’s books
    2. Healthcare books
    3. Cookbooks

Leena’s podcast was created because she wanted to spend more time with Janan.  6-year-old Leena chooses and reads books that she has permission from the author and the publisher to read.  They have guest readers too.  Stories will be available to purchase at Global Bookshelves International.  Leena wanted to read stories from her bookshelves at home, which represent voices and diversity from around the world.  They are picture books for young children ages 0-6 years.

Books in print are important.  They teach patience, provide tactile experiences, and build relationships with the person who is reading.

Janan would like to speak on a TedX talk some day about “We can change the world by reading books to children.”

How does Janan use her voice as an educator?  Coaching and publishing.

Janan was in textbook publishing.  She has published more than 30 books.  Now, she is in the CME space.  Janan considers how learners want to receive the information.  She gives the reader what they need to learn in less time.  She learned the science of how people learn during her Fellowship in Educational Technology, Research, and Development.

As a coach, Janan listens to coaching clients and reflects back what there’e good at.  She helps pharmacists see their windows of opportunity.  She works with clients through The Happy PharmD.  Some people want to advance their career, find a part-time side hustle, start a business, or find a new job.  Career coaching brings clarity, improves mindset, develops a strategy, clarifies a pharmacist’s “why,” gets rid of imposter syndrome, and builds confidence over 3 months.  90% is “inner” work.  10% is finding a job.

Janan mentioned two coaching success stories.  One was a burned out woman pharmacist who became a medical writer.  Another story featured a man named Sam who was in an independent pharmacy setting.  He made the transition to consulting.  Both are happier now.  Do you want to try working with a career coach?  Visit the https://thehappypharmd.com.

How does Janan use her voice as a writer?

She is employed as a writer.  She creates videos or presentations that will be delivered in-person by healthcare providers of all kinds.  The name of the company is CME Outfitters.  It is a subsidiary of Knowfully Learning Group.  Janan says she stumbled into writing by accident.  She’s a storyteller.  Janan also writes articles for GoodRX for consumers.  Ex:  pets and medicine.

Janan is the Chief Content Officer of The Happy PharmD.  The Happy PharmD Founder Alex Barker and Janan are co-writing a book called Potential about career paths.  Watch for that to be published in 2022.

Fortunately, there are no conflicts of interest among all her different professional pursuits!

As we wrapped up, Janan proposed creating a podcast that brings to light disease states in populations that aren’t talked about enough.  Length would be 5 minutes (short, bite-sized chunks).

Interview with Michelle Fritsch, PharmD, BCGP - pharmacist, entrepreneur, and mentor

Today’s episode is an interview with Dr. Michelle Fritsch.  She’s a pharmacist, entrepreneur, and mentor.

She is founder of Retirement Wellness Strategies, LLC supporting a transition to health in retirement and beyond. She cares for patients so they can live a long healthy and purpose-filled life so they can be a hero to their family and others.  She works with a broad definition of health – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social.

    Highlights from the interview

    Dr. Michelle Fritsch’s Businesses:

    1. Retirement Wellness Strategies.  Meds MASH has been wrapped into that.
    2. Medipreneurs
    3. PROPEL Comprehensive Wellness (coming soon!)

Retirement Wellness Strategies came out of an identified need after years of practice.  Michelle’s background is geriatrics and academia.  She wanted to work with patients in “early geriatrics:” age 55-70.  She wants to help them define a plan for long-term health so that when they retire, those are fulfilled, active, vital years instead of having a big health decline and surviving.  The health decline that occurs at retirement/upon reaching geriatrics is preventable.

Why the name Meds MASH?  “Meds” because she’s a pharmacist.  MASH stands for “Mature Adults Safe at Home.”  Baby Boomers don’t like labels, like “Mature” or “Geriatric,” but the literature says “geriatric” is >65 years old.

Retirement Wellness Solutions is a planning process.  Financial Planners and Estate Planning attorneys serve the same population.

Don’t call Michelle the day you retire.  Call her years in advance to develop a strategy!  A strategic plan includes the patient’s long-term health in 4 key areas: purpose, activity, prevention, and health information.

During our interview, Michelle told several success stories, including one about a client who was resistant to even the first 15-minute consultation.  By the 5th visit, the length of the visit was 60 minutes, and the client looked forward to the discussions.  Some clients have moved up their retirement because they are excited about how clear they can picture it and how it will be.  They can’t wait to get started!

What are some challenges Michelle’s clients face?

    1. Licensed professionals find it difficult to walk away from their credentials at retirement.
    2. Selling a business and walking away from it can be a big life event for business founders.
    3. Mental health is fragile for some executives who experience loneliness, despair, and anger when they retire.
    4. The suicide rate in the 55-75 age-range is rising.  That may be preventable.  More men than women in the 55-75 year-old age group commit suicide.
    5. The divorce rate among 55-75 year-olds is also going up.  When couples talk before retirement about their differences and how they may have grown apart during their working years, it helps plan for the future.

Who does Michelle work with?  Michelle helps men and women.  She loves helping couples who plan together.  Her “why” comes from the experience of knowing that skilled executives retire to binge Netflix.  If Michelle can instead influence them to use their passion, skills, knowledge, and influence for whatever excites them in what comes next, she has exponentially multiplied the impact that enhancing their health can have.

Michelle wrote a book titled, “Preventive Maintenance for a High Mileage Life.”   It’s about strategically thinking about and managing your mental health, emotional health, spiritual health, and social health.  You can find it on amazon.com.

Medipreneurs was co-founded by Sue Paul, RPh; Anna Garrett, PharmD; and Michelle Fritsch, PharmD.  They helped one another develop their businesses.  Medipreneurs supports healthcare entrepreneurs who are pursuing their entrepreneurial passions.

I have been to the 2018, 2019, and 2021 Medipreneurs Summits.  I loved them all.  The Founders and Summit participants helped me funnel my business ideas down to one.  This year (2021), I got the idea for a side business.

Entrepreneurs need coaches.  Michelle started working with coaches when she worked in academia.  As she has matured as an entrepreneur, her coaching needs have changed.  She says, “You learn as you go.”  Entrepreneurs are continuous learners.

A challenge Michelle faces is that she can only help so many people one-on-one. 15,000 people turn 65 every day.  There is a market filled with people who need to plan for the future!

What’s next for Michelle?  PROPEL Comprehensive Wellness!  Retirement Wellness Solutions has a one-on-one business model.  Propel Comprehensive Wellness will be a “one-to-many” business model.  Michelle’s friend is an Aging Life Care Manager. She and Michelle created PROPEL Comprehensive Wellness together.  Videos and workbooks will be launched in the next few months.  PROPEL stands for Powerful Retirement Options for a Purpose-filled, Engaged Life.  As of October 2021, Propel is not on the market yet.

Pharmacy Podcasts Series Part 1 of 3 with Special Guest Dr. Christina Madison, The Public Health Pharmacist

Pharmacy Podcasts Series Part 1 of 3 with Special Guest Dr. Christina Madison, The Public Health Pharmacist

Today’s episode is the kick-off of a 3 part series about pharmacy podcasts.  This entire episode was recorded using lavaliere (lapel) microphones…even the interview with special guest Dr. Christina Madison.

Dr. Christina Madison is a pharmacist, podcast host, and Founder and CEO of The Public Health Pharmacist, PLLC, a public health consulting firm. She is a clinical pharmacist specializing in public health with a focus on infectious communicable diseases.  We became fast friends through LinkedIn and Zoom last year, and we had the good fortune of meeting up at the Medipreneurs Summit for Healthcare Entrepreneurs in Cincinnati, OH last weekend (October 8-10, 2021), where she helped me test my new portable podcasting set-up.

Pharmacy podcasts, in my humble opinion, are podcasts produced by pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy associations, and the Pharmacy Podcast Network.

Next week (October 22, 2021), I’ll talk about the pharmacy podcasts I listen to most and why I listen to them.  Then, in part 3 of this series (Oct 29, 2021), I will give reasons that pharmacists should have a podcast.  What’s in it for the pharmacist?  What’s in it for the listener?  Join me for for parts 2 and 3 of this series to hear more about pharmacy podcasts.

Thank you Dr. Christina Madison for being my guest on episode 118 of The Pharmacist’s Voice ® Podcast! Christina is a real pro at public speaking and a lot of fun to hang out with. Thanks again Dr. Christina! 💕
