    Welcome to the Altbays Table Talk (Feat. Rowan Pyne and Leo Magri)

    Tom McCartney is a former professional rugby player and accomplished real estate salesperson, known for his dedication to health and fitness. He was born and raised in east Auckland, where he grew up with his three siblings. 

    After completing his education, Tom pursued a building apprenticeship, dedicating three years to honing his skills in the trade. However, his life took an exciting turn when he received a contract with the Blues, New Zealand professional rugby union team based in Auckland, wider training squad, launching his professional rugby career. From that moment on, he played for Auckland and the Blues from 2007 to 2014 before making a significant move to Ireland.

    In 2014, Tom married his wife Taryn, shortly before they relocated to Ireland. Together, they have two children.

    During his time in Ireland, Tom played for Connacht for six seasons, achieving a milestone in the club's history by securing the first-ever Pro12 championship in 2016. His rugby career came to a close in 2020, after which he transitioned seamlessly into the real estate industry, joining Ray White. Tom's commitment to his career coincided with a difficult time as his mother battled early-onset dementia, eventually passing away during the challenges of the Covid lockdowns.

    Aside from his professional pursuits, Tom remains deeply invested in maintaining his well-being. He prioritizes both his mental and physical health, incorporating a rigorous workout routine, typically exercising six out of seven days a week. Alongside regular cold showers and sauna sessions, he has embraced a mostly carnivore diet for the past four years. Tom's dedication to a healthy lifestyle continues to shape his life beyond the rugby field.

    Please tell me I am not the only one who has struggled with finding that right balance when it comes to health and wellness? Years ago I was going through one of the toughest, most pivotal moments of my life when my brother encouraged me to stay active and find outlets for my physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

    Well, one thing I found was that all four of these, in one way or another, involve REST. Forbes did a great article about 6 pieces of expert sleep advice where they unpacked sleeps effect on our immune health, for fitness, for our brain health, for preventative health, consistency, and overall routine. Experts say that the more we can balance these four areas, the healthier our body systems - which overall effects our health and wellness.

    The challenge seems to be in knowing HOW to find that balance? Well, today on Holly's Highlights we are going to take a closer look at exploring these areas, ask some questions for self reflection in each one, identify how you can set goals to acheive that overall balance, and provide resources and tools to equip you for a better health and wellness for the season of life you are in right now.

    At the end of it all - as spring has sprung - bloom where you are planted - in health in wellness in all.
