George Tingo ~ Are you an Entrepreneur?

George Tingo ~ Are you an Entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurship. What is that exactly? And what does it have to do with the Pilates Method?
Well, if are you a Pilates instructor or studio owner, then you may find this interview especially interesting. Our guest is George Tingo, an entrepreneur who has a 40-year career in business and law and founded and practiced law in a San Francisco based business law firm. He was the Founder/CEO of a multitude of national and international service, manufacturing and technology companies, including CEO for a publicly traded company.
For those of us who own our own studios and even those who are independent Pilates instructors, I’ve asked George from his perspective, what it takes to keep a business running and how better we might manage our studios. As George will explain, a healthy business has three goals. Your business for profit, your business for the betterment of others, and thirdly, your business for creating your own peace of mind. George is an avid golfer and yoga practitioner and perhaps one day soon, a Pilates client!

Nancy Chin ~ Owner, Pilates Avenue Los Gatos, Full hip replacement

Nancy Chin ~ Owner, Pilates Avenue Los Gatos, Full hip replacement

Our guest today is Nancy Chin, owner of Pilates Avenue Los Gatos in the city of Los Gatos, California. She is a graduate of the Vintage Pilates program called, The Work. Last summer, Nancy had a life changing experience that impacted her own Pilates practice and gave her an entirely new understanding of the body - especially, the pelvic region. After many years of dealing with an extremely painful hip, Nancy decided to have her hip replaced. I’m not sure if there are statistics that show the number of Pilates instructors who have hip replacements, but I thought Nancy would be the perfect person to take us through the surgery, the post surgical phase and if the Pilates method had assisted in recovering her balance, strength and mobility.

Reiner Grootenhuis ~ Owner, Pilates-Powers studio

Reiner Grootenhuis ~ Owner, Pilates-Powers studio

Reiner Grootenhuis was born in Berlin and his journey to finding his life’s work started as a 12-year-old racing cyclist, training 5 days a week, resting on Saturday and racing on Sunday. Reiner explored other sports as well, such as rowing and weightlifting, but all of these activities took a toll on his body and his physical pain was constant. There was something missing in his overall body conditioning and after much research he discovered autogenic training, a little known relaxation and mediation practice which helped to soften his overtrained muscles. By sixteen, Reiner began studies in the martial arts of Tai Chi Chuan and Kung Fu and graduated to teaching self-defense to women and children. Then in 1992 while watching television, Reiner saw an advertisement for the Pilates method and he filed the ad away knowing one day he’d try out Pilates. It was 2005 when Reiner finally decided to explore Pilates and bought a Pilates DVD to help him learn on his own. He took to the work immediately and was hooked. Reiner recognized that his previous trainings had prepared him for a career in Pilates and in 2010 he  sought out a Pilates certification program called Body Arts Science International, also known as BASI. The following year, Reiner completed BASI’s certification for mat and equipment. There is much more to Reiner's story, tune in to this episode to learn more!
