7 Little Australians - Memories of Pip

7 Little Australians - Memories of Pip

50 years ago, when I was 14, I was fortunate enough to be cast in the role of 'Pip' in the  1973, ABC production of Ethel Turner's: '7 Little Australians'.

This podcast is about my memories of that time.

This my final podcast for the time being. I hope that you have enjoyed them.

They will remain available through Buzzsprout and on all the major platforms exactly as they have been since January.

Beware the Sneaky PIP - How Companies Use Aggressive "Performance Management" to Conceal Layoffs In a Downturn And How to Protect Yourself

Beware the Sneaky PIP - How Companies Use Aggressive "Performance Management" to Conceal Layoffs In a Downturn And How to Protect Yourself

In this episode, I break down the trend that we're starting to see in tech - companies using creative "performance management" strategies to cut costs and people in order to avoid labeling them as layoffs and avoid paying severance.  These strategies also help companies shift the blame for a downward trend and buy time with investors, while you're left holding the blame bag.

Tune in to this episode to find out:
    1) How to recognize a "sneaky PIP (Performance Improvement Plan)" is coming,
    2) Why most companies use sneaky PIPs during downturns to conceal layoffs and hiring freezes and buy time with investors,
    3) How to proactively manage your situation in a way that saves you money and time.

Getting support during this time of your career is critical.  If you're interested in joining a confidential support group of female peers in tech who are affected by these trends, please indicate your interest by filling out a 1 minute confidential survey here: https://forms.gle/xvwfQV4SMLnLTQRV9

Talk about East lake Fedex cup championship finals:

    • Rory Finished 21 under to win his third fedex cup the first to do that
    • Sheffler and IM tied second at 2o under. IM almost tied Rory on 18 had the opportunity there to eagle it but his second shot made that difficult for him when it landed in the deep rough off the green.

    LIV/PGA NEWS:

So obviously a lot of big news this year with the PGA and LIV Golf

Commissioner Jay Monnahand spoke to the media at East lake in case you missed it.  Go over some key notes about big changes coming to the PGA.

And listen this is good! Change is good and change needs to happen.

I am not sure if its purse sizes or the way the game is played or home many events they have but the PGA has pretty much been the same my entire life and probably longer.

So one positive to the LIV Tour is that its forcing the PGA to listen to its players and its Fans and make the changes that will improve the game, HOPEFULLY.

Before I go on to talk about what Jay said in his press release, here is the outline for the future schedule changes and compensation the PGA is implementing.  And keep in mind a lot of this is echoing what LIV is attempting to do.  So clearly the LIV tour was on to something.

So when asked if a player who has gone off to LIV looked at

this and says, this lo  oks pretty good, would you lift the

    suspension and welcome them back?

    JAY MONAHAN: No.

    Q. Why not?

JAY MONAHAN: They've joined the LIV Golf Series and

they've made that commitment. For most of them, they've

    made multiyear commitments.

As I've been clear throughout, every player has a choice,

and I respect their choice, but they've made it. We've

made ours. We're going to continue to focus on the things

that we control and get stronger and stronger.

    I think they understand that.

    Q. A year ago you sat up here and were asked about

these competing leagues and you didn't sound too

worried. I'm wondering if you have any regrets that

you didn't take the threat more seriously? And if you

could go back in time, what would you do to try and

    thwart their momentum?

JAY MONAHAN: I take everything seriously. I think

anybody that knows me knows that that's the case.

To me, if you listen to me talk then and you listen to me

talk every day since then, you focus on the things that you

control. When you've got an organization that has a history

that runs 54 years, and number one, again, competitively is

the best system to identify the best players in the world and

    put them in a position to achieve at the highest level;

number two, because of that, provides a platform that

allows them to build their own respective businesses and

brands, and to be able to do the things independently that

they're able to do, that coupled with history, tradition,

impact -- life is all about purpose.

I think that's on clear display today. The fact that we day in

and day out come into a community like this, revitalize it,

are a partner to it, leave it better than we found it, there's

so much depth to what we do, and continuing to focus on

that, as the leader of this organization, as the leader of the

players that we have, that's where all of my focus has and

    will always be.

There's competition everywhere. That's the nature of what

our players do out here. We're competing against other

leagues. We're competing for younger eyeballs. We're

competing to grow internationally. We're competing to

grow our sport relative to other sports. That's the nature of

    what we do.

I think since the point that we were together last year and I

made those comments and I talked about it, we've gotten

better. And as I said earlier, I promise you when we're

here a year from now, we'll continue to get better and

stronger with the best players in the world behind us and

    the greatest members.

Great Expectations Read Along 10: Oysters, Theaters, and Prisons... oh my!

Great Expectations Read Along 10: Oysters, Theaters, and Prisons... oh my!

Welcome to part 10 of our Great Expectations read along book club as we talk about chapters 30-34. And I'm joined again this week with Carol! Today's chapters we discuss whether or not a barrel of oysters was a good gift for Pip to give Joe, we scratch our heads over Pip's experience of Hamlet as played by Mr. Wopsle, talk about Pip's constant connections to convicts and prison imagery, and then we make ourselves sad as we think about who is controlling Pip's destiny and the effects it has on both Estella and Pip. It's not all tears though, so come on in, make yourself at home, and join in on the discussion!

    Timestamps:
01:50 What is love?… thoughts on love and discussion of Miss Havisham’s character and trauma that she is working through.
06:00 Part 19 Chapter 30 in which we get sidetracked talking about oysters… and somehow, I manage to reference A Christmas Carol. Twice.
17:45 Part 19 Chapter 31 - in which we go to the theater for a ham-fisted performance of Hamlet
23:47 Part 20 Chapter 32 - in which we visit a prison and Pip reflects on the large number of convicts connected to his life. Also I get sidetracked on trying to figure out what familiar ghost of a shadow that Pip is seeing in Estella. This might be an inconsequential thing but it’s nagging me.
31:06 Part 20 Chapter 33 - in which Pip and Estella talk and see London, and we make ourselves sad thinking about the line… "We have no choice, you and I, but to obey our instructions. We are not free to follow our own devices, you and I.”

Home Sweet Home? Great Expectations Read Along, Chapters 27-29

In the chapters we discuss today, Pip reunites with Joe (yay!) but it's super awkward, and Pip is a bit rude (boo!) Then, Pip is invited to Satis House to have a reunion with a grown up Estella (awkward!). Also, I'm not sure why but the last 10 seconds of the video has no picture, just audio (confused?) I give us a couple of questions to think about after these chapters, so I'd love to hear what you think. Comment below or come find us on voxer!
