The 1988 Murder of Mary Plummer is nothing short of a travesty.  Taken before her time, her family still suffers.  In cold cases like these, that are still entirely solvable, justice is still to be served. The prime suspect may be long dead, but the preponderance of evidence suggests he likely did not act alone.

Of course, a spouse will always be the first suspect in a homicide. Some will have doubts, especially when a case goes cold.  As we ask who and why would anyone want to kill Mary Plummer, we have to look at everyone, starting with those closest to her.

In this episode, I had the honor of interviewing John Plummer.

John grew up in and around Nashville, TN.   He was unsuccessfully raised Southern Baptist and later baptized into the Roman Catholic Church.    He first came across independent sacramental churches in the mid-1980s.   After becoming actively involved in the ISM in the early to mid-90s, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1996 and consecrated in 1998.    He has degrees from Fordham – Bachelor of Arts in both philosophy & theology, Vanderbilt – Master of Arts, in history of Christian thought; and, the Graduate Theological Foundation – Doctor of Philosophy in theology.  He is perhaps best known for the published version of his dissertation, The Many Paths of the Independent Sacramental Movement.    John is now the associate pastor and bishop coadjutor at St Basil's Parish in Nashville, preaching and celebrating the liturgy every week.

It's the very first time the Department of Tangents was recorded live in front of an audience. The North East Comic Con and Collectibles Extravaganza expanded its podcast panels and its comedy offerings this year, and I was lucky to nab all four comedians on the Friday night show presented by The Boston Comedy Festival before they took the stage. That's BCF founder Jim McCue we're thanking at the end.

I haven’t done a lot of panel shows before, but if they are as interesting as this one, I may have to make a point of doing more. Farris, Ruskowski, Spencer, and Plummer all have great stories of how they got into comedy and found who they were as comedians. Farris started and then stopped for years due to family obligations. Ruskowski is a social worker. Spencer bombed on purpose her first time onstage. Plummer has worked every kind of room you can imagine, from clubs to, as she calls them, “dead animal lodges.” A good chunk of the conversation centered around identity and experience. And there were some delightful moments where the comics asked each other questions, and I just got to sit back and listen.
