107: Turn Your Business Into A Show - ASMM Small Business Connections

Chris Brogan joins us for this episode of the ASMM Small Business Connections Podcast to talk about why you should think about your business as a show. In today’s marketing space, it is more important than ever to figure out how to engage your audience between their purchases when they may or may not want to buy. For 2021 and beyond we continue to find new ways to gain our audience’s attention.

    We discuss:

“Why should a business think about itself as a show?”

“You’re changing your title to ‘Showrunner.’ What’s that about?”

“Can you run a business without thinking about it as a show?”

“What are the practical elements to work through to make a show?"

Turning your business into a show is a means of packaging your business’s information to stay top of mind when our audience is deciding to buy. Gain someone’s attention and make good use of it. We learned in 2020 that localized businesses do really matter and that the community will support their local businesses.

The showrunner role is similar to that of the CEO in regard to theme maintenance. The CEO’s responsibility is to define the vision of the business while recruiting and nurturing the staff who are going to keep the vision flowing. As a showrunner, the question to answer is, what do I need to do to take into account the theme or scope of the business. The marketing goal of the showrunner is to get the little rectangle box out of someone’s pocket and gain the audiences’ attention. Chris uses the Mandalorian as an example. The showrunner-CEO is the director who ensures the theme actor delivers their lines in character, staying with the theme as a whole. The showrunner figures out new ways to run your business.

Chris Brogan is president of Chris Brogan Media, offering business storytelling and marketing advisory help for mid to larger-sized companies. Chris is a sought after keynote speaker and the New York Times bestselling author of nine books and counting. He’s working on his tenth: title forthcoming. His latest project is The Backpack Show: a business show dedicated to finding insights from unusual places.
