Spontaneous human combustion refers to the death from a fire that originates without an external source of ignition and people believe that the fire starts inside the victim's body.  Many cases have been cited as SHC, but it's never been scientifically proven.  If this is a real phenomenon, why doesn't it happen more often?

On the afternoon of November 24th, 1971, a man that called himself Dan Cooper approached the counter of Northwest Orient Airlines in Portland, Oregon. He was wearing a business suit and raincoat and was holding a briefcase. He paid $20 for his one-way ticket in cash, and it was flight #305 for Seattle, Washington on a Boeing 727. After boarding the plane, he handed the stewardess a note and told her he had a bomb. He demanded 4 parachutes and $200k and released most of the passengers but kept the pilots and some crew members. He jumped from the plane and the only evidence left behind was 8 cigarette butts, a hair on the headrest and a clip-on necktie. The FBI has closed this case and it's up to the citizen sleuths to solve the mystery of the hijacking.

15-year-old Kara Robinson was kidnapped in broad daylight by a serial killer, Richard Evonitz on June 24th, 2002.  She was held captive for 18 hours but managed to escape and lead the police to her captor.  Kara shares a lot about trauma and how to overcome it on her TikTok.

Walburga Oesterreich (Dolly) married a wealthy man named Fred.  When she was 33, she was introduced to 17-year-old Otto Sanhuber, who worked at her husband's factory.  Dolly invited Otto to her home to "fix her sewing machine" and they began an affair.  Otto didn't really have any friends or family, so he agreed to move into Dolly's attic to make their affair easier.  During a fight one night, Otto flew out of the attic and murdered Dolly's husband.  She began dating other men and kept Otto in the attic to be her sex slave and she told people he was her vagabond half-brother.

Mrs. Warren's family came down with Typhoid fever shortly after hiring their new cook, Mary Mallon.  It was soon discovered that Mary was a carrier of typhoid even though she appeared to be healthy.  In the 1900's, people didn't understand germs as well as we do now.  It was difficult to make Mary understand that she was making others sick, so they ended up putting her in quarantine for a few years to study her.  When she was released, she was warned that she could no longer be a cook, but she didn't follow the rules and was sent back to quarantine.

Terrible Typhoid Mary A True Story Of The Deadliest Cook In America by Susan Campbell Bartoletti

In 1970, MGM's wardrobe department decided to auction off their props and costumes.  Kent Warner, gave one pair of Judy Garland's ruby slippers to be auctioned and he stole the rest.  A collector named Michael Shaw ended up with a pair and eventually loaned them to the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, MN, but they were stolen in 2005.  There were many theories about what happened to the shoes, but they were located and recovered by the FBI in 2018.
