A Survivor's Impact with Celena Roby Henry

A Survivor's Impact with Celena Roby Henry

Legislative session is in full swing here in the Mountain State, and we are honored this month to bring you the story of Celena Roby Henry in celebration of her story of survival and the positive change she made for survivors in West Virginia. Public policy can often be confusing or even disheartening, and it can be daunting for both survivors and advocates to try and communicate needs to lawmakers. Join us as we talk to Celena about her journey of empowerment and what she sees as emerging needs for people experiencing domestic violence in our communities.

Branches Domestic Violence Shelter has been providing services to. victims of domestic violence in the Appalachian communities of Cabell, Lincoln, Mason, Putnam, and Wayne counties in West Virginia.

QUICK CHAT: Domestic Violence - Does the cycle always continue?

QUICK CHAT: Domestic Violence - Does the cycle always continue?

QUICK CHAT: Domestic Violence - Does the cycle always continue?

There is no doubt that when you have been exposed to psychological or physical Domestic Violence, there are high odds (due to dangerous subconscious psychological forces) that you will end up in another Domestically Violent relationship. But... this is when the patterns remain under our conscious awareness and therefore out of our control. The cycle can break! Well and truly! This QUICK CHAT explains why it is a myth that Domestic Violence will repeat and explores the 'whys' and  'hows' of change.

On a personal and societal level, we all need to be skilled in our knowledge about this issue to take away the power of Domestic Violence in families.

Finding Beauty in the Ashes with Shelly Edwards Jorgensen

Shelly Edwards Jorgensen, author of the memoir "Beautiful Ashes", joins me for a conversation about surviving domestic violence, sexual assault, and homicide.  We also discuss the flaws in the criminal justice system that often re-traumatizes victims and in Shelly's case, did not actively protect her.

    Margarita Gracheva // 188 // Survivor

On December 11th, 2017, Margarita Gracheva's husband, Dmitry, took her into an isolated forest and cut off her hands with an ax.  Doctors were able to recover one of her hands during a highly complex surgery.  Russia decriminalized domestic violence, so Dmitry's sentence was only 14 years.  Margarita is now an advocate and has a TV show where she helps other victims of violence.

From Something to Someone: The Denise Bard Story of Resilience and Hope Part 1

From Something to Someone: The Denise Bard Story of Resilience and Hope Part 1

Denise Bard's  life story, one marked by struggles and hardships, is a compelling portrayal of the human spirit's capacity to rise above circumstances. This is a must listen as Denise discusses being born from  two drug-addicted parents and the  physical, mental, and emotional abuse that she endured. Abuse and neglect led her to almost taking her own life, but she chose to live and fight.

Denise attributes her transformation to the intervention and constant support from Anchor House, a shelter for runaway, abused and homeless youth, in New Jersey, that left an indelible mark on her life. The guidance she received from her case manager, Michelle, was instrumental in unshackling her from the cycle of abuse and neglect. Michelle's teachings of resilience and recognizing the value of genuine care, shaped Denise's outlook on life. One hug literally melted the fear she had felt, daily.  Today, Denise stands tall, forever guided by these lessons that continue to shape her life journey.

Now, Denise is giving voice to her story, shattering her past's silence and finding empowerment in doing so. A chance encounter with Anchor House during an annual bike ride in her town presented her with an opportunity to share her story publicly. This fortuitous encounter eventually led to her becoming a board member of the non-profit organization that helped save her life.  Denise Bard's story serves as an affirmation of the power of resilience, a testament to the transformational effect of positive influence, and a beacon of hope for anyone battling childhood trauma. Join us, as we traverse this journey of resilience, transformation, and hope with Denise Bard and hear how just 30 seconds can change someone for a lifetime.

*There was a small clicking sometimes when Denise was speaking that was not in our interview, I have spoken to my recording host as I have not experienced this before. I tried to clean it up best I could, but you can still slightly hear it. My apologies, but it does not take away from her story.

Sex Series: A ‘Not So Black and White’ Conversation About Consent with Lisa Chatham Part 2

Sex Series: A ‘Not So Black and White’ Conversation About Consent with Lisa Chatham Part 2

WE'RE BACK!! Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support. On this weeks episode we've got the second part to our interview with the legendary Lisa Chatham. We cover a lot of ground from consent with partners and owning our wanting, speaking boundaries, polyamory and consenting non-monogamy, what it means to be a hell yes, and much more. The conversation of consent is one we could have indefinitely, and we grappled with such ideas, as not being damaged goods as a survivor of sexual assault and what it might mean to have a somatic practice in order to get back into our bodies after long moments of dissociation. We are all worthy of excellent sexual experiences so press play and enjoy!

Is Police Training Harming Domestic Violence Survivors?

Is Police Training Harming Domestic Violence Survivors?

In this episode, I talk with domestic violence survivors Toxicology Dr. Nancy "Badass" Bordelon and Yvonne Harrison. Both are survivors and both found issues with our criminal justice system for their particular situations. It is a unique perspective as they didn't fit any typical "victim" trait. They weren't lower-socioecomic class, they weren't uneducated, and they did have family they could lean on. Listen in as they share how they were helped, how they were failed, and how they are fighting back to make sure no other victims have to go through their same hell. This is a tear jerker episode, get your tissues read...I needed my own. I hope you enjoy

Breast Cancer Warriors with Liz Ciardi - Ep 23

Breast Cancer Warriors with Liz Ciardi - Ep 23

This week we focus on breast cancer awareness and it's start in 1985 by former First Lady Betty Ford when she launched a call for action for women across the country by making October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  And her leadership and legacy for women's health still continues today 37 years later.

We have a very special guest, Cancer Survivor, Cancer Warrior and Mentor, Liz Ciardi.  Liz has faced and survived cancer multiple times and has made it her life's mission to mentor newly diagnosed women. Liz brings knowledge, support, comfort and options to many women by sharing her story.  Women Mentoring other women is so important and maybe never more so than when dealing with a Cancer diagnosis. Liz has mentored countless women over the years to ensure they feel empowered and know all their treatment options. Liz shares the importance of early detection, the benefits of using teaching hospitals, and encouraging women to take charge of their own treatment plans.

Co-Host Ellen, also a cancer Survivor and Cancer Warrior shares her story of early detection and treatment.  Ellen also honors her mother's brave but short battle with cancer that took her from us way too early.

Breast Cancer will directly affect 1 in 8 women but indirectly affects us all.  Liz shares how her own mentor, Julia Tomasovich, helped her through her first diagnosis of Breast Cancer while Julia was in Stage 4 with Breast Cancer herself.  Julia inspired Liz to become the Cancer Mentor she is today.  On October 26 each year Julia's family and friends gather in her favorite Mexican restaurant to celebrate her amazing legacy.

    This week's obsessions:
Tish: Mobile Breast Cancer screening vans - they are in your neighborhoods, ladies!
Ellen: Vital Proteins Collagen creamer for hair and nails.
