Exclusive interview with Serhii Plokhy: Lessons from History

Please note: Today is a national Bank Holiday in the UK. Our regular programming will return tomorrow.

    Day 550.

The history of Ukraine and Russia is a subject that has come up again and again on this podcast. Good history and ‘bad’ history underpin how all of us understand the origins, reasons and justifications for the ongoing full-scale invasion. One guiding light is Ukrainian historian Serhii Plokhy: professor of Ukrainian history and Director at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University.

His books, from ‘The Gates of Europe’ to the recently released 'Russo-Ukrainian War' are essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Ukraine and its history.

David Knowles spoke to Professor Plokhy recently about Ukrainian and Russian history, parallels with the Second World War and revelations in his new book.

Forewarned before armed: how to predict war

Forewarned before armed: how to predict war

Military types need not wait until mass movements of troops to know a conflict is coming. We examine a raft of subtle and not-so-subtle market moves that would precede a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. France’s quiet volte face on the extent of NATO and the European Union will reshape European security (12:04). And how scrapyards are becoming efficient, lucrative disassembly lines (19:41).

Why hasn't Boris Johnson handed over his phone to the Covid inquiry?

Why hasn't Boris Johnson handed over his phone to the Covid inquiry?

'I love deadlines ... I love the whooshing sound they make when they go by.'

Monday 4pm was the cut off for Boris Johnson to hand over his phone and Whatsapp messages to the Covid Inquiry. 48 hours later that phone still hasn't reached its end destination.

Johnson says he's cooperating. The phone is with his lawyers. But the inquiry is waiting...

Meanwhile the Cabinet Secretary Simon Case has delivered a shot across the bows to his old boss accusing those who criticise the civil service of 'self-defeating cowardice'.

On today's episode we look at the political fall out and we also ask how an organisation like the BBC should cover a story about itself from the inside.
